Wanted: Personal Buffer Often snarly, workaholic executive seeks “buffer” from annoying outside distractions AKA people. Free spirits with personal boundary issues, excessive quirks, or general squeamishness need not apply. Salary negotiable. Confidentiality required. Workaholic billionaire Sawyer Carlyle may have joked he needed a buffer from their marriage-obsessed mom, but he didn’t need a … but he didn’t need a waiting room filled with candidates to further distract him. (Thanks, bro.) But when a sexy job applicant shooes his mom and the socialite in tow out of his office, Sawyer sees the genius of the plan. And the woman. In fact, Miss Clover Lee might just get the fastest promotion in history, from buffer to fake fiancé…
This free-spirit might look like hot sunshine and lickable rainbows, but she negotiates like a pitbull. Before Sawyer knows what hit him, he’s agreed to give up Friday nights for reality tv, his Saturdays for flea markets (why buy junk still baffles him), his Tuesdays and Thursdays for date nights (aka panty-losing opportunities if he plays his cards right). And now she wants lavender bath salts and tulips delivered every Monday?
Yup, she’s just screwing with him. Good thing she’s got this non-negotiatable six-weeks-and-she’s-gone rule or Sawyer may have just met his match.

The Negotiator (A Hot Romantic Comedy) by Avery Flynn
This is billionaire Sawyer Carlyle and Clover Lee’s story.
This book is fantastic! I knew from the beginning that this book was going to be a winner.
Sawyer works all the time. He has a reputation for being grumpy. Well, thanks to his brother he ended up hiring Clover as his Personal Buffer. Now, you will just have to read the book to find out what Sawyer’s brother did. Well, Clover is something else! I fell in love with her right away. Right away you can feel the chemistry between Sawyer and Clover. Sawyer and Clover are so different but are perfect for each other.
A fun, entertaining, and hot romance. In the end who is the best “negotiator? Or do they negotiate for a long term plan where they both are winners? Be prepared to laugh and lose yourself in this story. You won’t be able to put it down.
FYI, contains mature content. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I love Avery Flynn’s writing style. It’s just the kind I like – so easy to read and flows so well. The story premise is crazy/hilarious but I love the always witty banter and the sizzling chemistry between the characters. I couldn’t put this book down!
I am forever falling in love with the stories that Avery Flynn writes. I know that when I sit down with one of her books that I am going to get back up again satisfied and, chances are, equally cursing and thanking the heavens for the book hangover I’ll undoubtedly have. The woman’s got a gift, what can I say?
I love how the plots of Flynn’s stories always leave me craving more. They are always intriguing and leave room for so many shenanigans that leave things open for so many possibilities. The world-building is always so organic. I always feel right at home in the story, as if I were living it. Flynn’s writing style is definitely to my taste. She has a way of incorporating humor, emotion, dialogue, and situations to create stories that truly stand out.
I am always so impressed with the characters that Flynn creates. Their personalities shine bright in each and every book. The side characters are always important to the story and, more often than not, they end up bringing so much life to the story. They really give the story depth. I love how many of the characters from her books crossover into other books.
Sawyer and Clover had really fantastic chemistry that leaped off the page. Their romance was an opposites-attract story that sizzled. Their attraction felt so genuine. Even though there was attraction right from the start, I loved how they built their relationship by getting to know one another throughout their fake engagement.
Overall, The Negotiator is the perfect balance of humor, heartfelt, and steamy. It will definitely put a checkmark next to all the boxes on your Rom-Com checklist. If you haven’t picked up a book by Avery Flynn yet then I urge you to. I can’t recommend her books enough!

Have you met the Carlyle brothers? No? Well, you need to. The Negotiator is the first in the Harbor City series by Ms. Flynn. It’s fun, entertaining, and has just the right amount of snark to keep things interesting. The cast of characters is more than they at first seem to be. Helene seems to be the typical high-society mother trying to marry her son off to the perfect high-society heiress. But is she? Hudson, the younger of the two Carlyle brothers, is the happy-go-lucky one, the one everyone loves, the one who is nothing but fun. But is he? Then, there’s Sawyer, the oldest, the one most like their father, the big picture guy, the one who is the top negotiator. Until he meets Clover. Then, all bets are off….
This is a fun one! It’s a solid 3-star read. I’d even give it 3.5 stars because the characters are so fun.
This was a fun read. I loved the characters and the premise. Can’t wait to read another book by this author.
I loved Clover Lee and Sawyer. There were laugh out loud moments, and Sawyer is definite book boyfriend material.
Loved the dialog between these characters, which kept moving the story along with humor and romance.
Absolute FUN! I listened to this one, cannot read right now, and I think this was the way to go! Workaholic Sawyer is set upon by his mother who thinks it is time to find him a love interest to get him out of the office and in a side he tells his brother he needs a “buffer” and since he is ever so helpful he takes out an advertisement and sends prospective buffers his way. Those who show up are all unacceptable until Clover Lee who is sure she is in the wrong spot and when she mistakenly snubs his mother and marriage-candidate wannabes as they are getting off the elevator and sends them away she finds herself with the job. Then the negotiating starts. These two really do spin each other in all the right ways and keeping up with each other is something else. It was funny to see Sawyer keep hiding her hiking boots every time a new pair would show up. This book was so witty, snarky, sexy, and so full of heart. I cannot wait to see Hudson fall and then Tyler get his.
I loved this book!! I can’t believe it took me so long to read this book.
I adored Sawyer. Even for the workaholic that he is, he is a kind man. He is described as being a grumpy person but I only saw him as dedicated. He is a big picture person and sometimes doesn’t see the details. I understand his reasoning about not wanting to hurt his mother but at some point he really should have told her to back off.
I liked Clover enough. There were times I really liked her and then there were others where she really bugged me. I loved her free spirit and bluntness. I loves how she wants adventure in her life. I just really didn’t like her reasoning and I think it was a real slap in the face to her mom whom she says she is close to.
I loved the mini dates they had, the flee market and movie nights. This was a couple that just worked together.
Negotiating a future without really trying.
I love the whole premise of the story. The characters were so cute and engaging. The tidal wave of emotions keeps you guessing at what will happen next. I really needed a pick-me-up and this was the right choice. Now, on to Hudson.
Loved this opposites-attract book! Lots of chemistry.
3 1/2 stars
The Negotiator is my first book by Avery Flynn. I enjoyed it well enough, but it definitely wasn’t my favorite book I have ever read. The cover says it’s a romcom, and while I had a couple of good laughs, the rom part fell a little short. The story itself was actually pretty good, think Pretty Woman but Clover isn’t a hooker.
The book certainly needs a better editor. There were a handful of typos, and the amount of time that has past in the story kept changing. It was supposed to be only 6 weeks, that’s the actual time frame before this fake engagement is going to end, then at one point it’s been a month and a half (hello that’s 6 weeks!) with a couple of weeks left, then it’s only been a month a couple of chapters later. Things like that that can really mess with a story.
Overall not bad though, and I’m going to read the second book.
I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it. I look forward to the next book in this series and reading more from this author.
I loved the back and forth banter between the main characters and the way they meet is an extremely entertaining concept.
too steamy for my taste but the characters were pretty entertaining and their interactions were funny, and the relationships stayed true and it was worth reading for the most part after a while I just skipped out on the sex, too much too detailed for my taste.
I didn’t like this book – too steamy. I didn’t care about the characters. I read perhaps the first two chapters then gave up.
I really enjoyed the characters, the way they played off each other. A great read!
Enjoyed this book. Wonderful characters
This book was hard to put down. I spent all day and night engrossed into this page Turner.
