An Amazon Charts bestseller. Professor Theo Cray is trained to see patterns where others see chaos. So when mutilated bodies found deep in the Montana woods leave the cops searching blindly for clues, Theo sees something they missed. Something unnatural. But a field trip to Montana suddenly lands him in the middle of an investigation into the bloody killing of one of his former students. As more details, and bodies, come to light, the local cops determine that the killer is either a grizzly gone rogue…or Theo himself. Racing to stay one step ahead of the police, Theo must use his scientific acumen to uncover the killer. Will he be able to become as cunning as the predator he hunts—before he becomes its prey?

The main character was so much of a smart science nerd, yet lovable. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
original and informative. Sometimes too many details
interesting enough that I want to read the next book in the
series
Good science but travel times in Montana seemed a bit short.
Very good read.
Take a nerdy scientist, put him in Montana and have him track a serial killer. A unique story and a great character. Cant wait for the next one.
Don’t know what I was thinking, downloading this book. Story line bizarre, characters unbelievable.
I am a fan of this author. Loved each and every one of his books. This one took a few chapters before I got it-rather the book got me and wouldn’t let me go! I may add a complaint though.
You know how it is when you find a good book and/or series, right? Man, you feel so good! Kind of get nervous when you pick up that last published book because you KNOW there isn’t a safety net there for you when you finish it because these great books take so arm long for these authors to write! So I plan on reading very slow, or maybe waiting until the day before the next in series comes out. Yeah, never works. It whispers “read me”. And even if it was possible for me to read slow it doesn’t last because it seems as if even those prized 350 to 400 page treasures have fewer words on the page as you get further into it because that last page comes at me faster than it seems possible.
This book? It’ll do that to you too. Try to wait until the second book in this series comes out because there isn’t any taking it slow. The pages turn at a speed so rapid I’m thankful I’m doing the brook. Otherwise I think those paper pages would set themselves on fire!
A truly different murder mystery. A scientist uses unorthodox methods to uncover a serial murderer. He used common sense and computer analysis to find missing people that were not being known as murder victims. Law enforcement don’t believe or understand that a murderer has been killing for decades.
I enjoyed the book overall, but the scientific information made the book drag a little too much.
Good psychological mystery and at points gave me chills. Starts out slowly and builds, kept me guessing to the end. Wish there was a bit more closure with the aftermath but I’m looking forward to the next book featuring Theo Cray.
I’ve never read a book quite like! It pulls you in from the first and never let’s up.
Theo is an example of the expression that “Still waters run deep”. The idea that a bear attack killed a student of his from years ago seems a weird premise for a murder investigation. And the police really do think he’s a nutcase…..and trust me, he makes it easy to believe he is “off”.
But Theo is deep and over time you see below the layers to the many facets of the man and his depth of knowledge is scary. When Theo investigates and starts figuring out how to predict where a killing took place, you hold your breath.
Along the way, Theo makes friends with Gus and Jillian and earns the respect of one cop, Glenn. All the characters are fully drawn and interesting.
You can feel the depth of despair in towns that are dying out with meth labs and drug runners taking over areas. And the people that are outsiders, or druggies, or just marginalized go missing over time, forgotten by most. Occasionally a missing person is found, mauled to death by a bear.
The plotting is tight, the graphs and scientific information are neat…like the character MacGyver, Theo has some tricks up his sleeve. The “bear” when you finally meet it, is just a sight to behold. The action is constant.
This book points out that cops, even good ones, sometimes make a straight line from bearclaw to bear even when the evidence changes….
The scene of cars in a field and the meaning if it will give you chills. Who do you trust in a small dying town where everybody knows each other….it must be a “bear” or an outsider.
My only problem was the number of beatings Theo took and kept coming back for more. The ending was superb. Can’t wait to read the second nook in this new series.
I loved the main character. A cross between the absent minded professor and sherlock holmes! I can’t wait to read more from this author!!
This book was full of suspense. Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. The ending will blow you away and have your heart racing. Best murder suspense novel I have read in years! I highly recommend it!
