R. Martin • “Rothfuss has real talent.” —Terry Brooks OVER 1 MILLION COPIES SOLD! DAY ONE: THE NAME OF THE WIND My name is Kvothe. I have stolen princesses back from sleeping … WIND
My name is Kvothe.
I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.
You may have heard of me.
So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature—the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man’s search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

I stayed up until 7:30 in the morning to finish this book. 600+ pages. The sequel is 900+ pages, and I hear there’s a third one in the works. While the first left a lot of questions yet to be answered, there were a lot of adventures that felt complete throughout, so I wasn’t too disappointed. The characters are spunky, the humor is fantastic, and the world building is some of the best I’ve read. I usually gravitate toward more modern, urban fantasy, but this one is epic high fantasy, and I loved it to pieces. <3
If you are a game of thrones fan you can’t afford to miss out on Patrick rothfuss’s king killer chronicles. This series is my new favorite!
If you like fantasy and want something that will hook you and leave you wanting more, then READ THIS BOOK. Marvelously crafted, detailed world-building, comfortable, believable characters, this book is incredible!
It was a breath of fresh air when I sat down to read this for the first time. Patrick has created such a unique universe that I was hopelessly lost within his world from the beginning. His characters feel so real, flaws and all. This is a book I recommend to anyone who asks me for a suggestion and one I even give as a gift knowing they will love it like I do.
Loved this book. It has a deep winding plot, amazing world building but best of all, the main protagonist makes you feel everything that he does. You’ll cheer for him, want to hit him on the head for being so stupid around women, and then forgive him when you remember just how young he is. And then you have the supporting cast. Just fantastic.
The Name of the Wind is a great book worth rereading. I really enjoyed the world and the characters!
A character driven fantasy novel…what a concept! Kvothe is a character so complex and interesting that the slower plot movement is paced just right. Real and not real, reality and myth, what makes a hero…interesting questions explored. Really well written, detailed and a world fully and richly formed. I finished what Rothfuss has written and am craving more.
I have complicated feelings about The Name of the Wind. On the one hand, it’s beautifully written, pure high fantasy with a fresh system of magic, which I love. On the other, there is not really much… plot.
To be fair, it’s pitched as a saga, and this book certainly qualifies. But the book is merely a chronological recounting of Kvothe’s life. The exceedingly talented Kvothe easily smacks down any obstacle, and no prevailing conflict carried me through the book enough to want to continue reading the series. Not to mention most of the female characters are flat.
Has anyone read this book or the others in the series? What did you think?
I don’t read a ton of fantasy, but I really, really enjoyed this book. To me it wasn’t necessarily wildly original (which I usually aim for), but it was just a superb story that’s really well-written and extremely enjoyable. I think it’s quite accessible to non-fantasy readers, so I encourage you to pick it up!
Patrick Rothfuss is a wonderful story teller. So much so, that he made a story of stories interesting and easy to follow. If you like fantasy, this is a must read!
Patrick Rothfuss is the best fantasy author of a generation, and book one of his Kingkiller series is utterly addicting.
If you have not read this book yet, you should. Period. It has some of the best world-building I’ve read recently, complex and interesting characters, and, of course, unique and fascinating magic systems. It does start a bit slowly, and the writing style can be hard to get into at first: the main tale is being told by a character reminiscing about his school years. However, the interludes get more and more interesting as you wonder what may have happened to this character, and you will find yourself hooked if you stick with it.
Warning, however: this is book 1 in a trilogy, and the third book has been eagerly anticipated for about a decade. The second book is out and highly worth reading, and I am glad to have read the first two even if the series is never concluded (though I hope it is!!).
I loved this book. The protagonist, Kvothe starts out as a young man who faces tragedy and dangers early in life. As the author skillfully builds the world Quothe lives in, he develops a protagonist who is passionate and hungry for knowledge. After reading this book, I eagerly moved on to the 2nd book in this series. The two books are excellent books. I am eagerly awaiting the final book!
Great story that takes place in a vividly imagined world that puts a new spin on “magic” and those who can use it. Story is told over 3 days & 3 time period, the past, the present, & the mythical lore period from which the history of this world is derived (only it may not be mythical at all).
This book is beautifully written. The prologue in particular is practically literary, and entranced me from the very beginning. This is another great one for fans of fantasy fiction.
I read this book from cover to cover, barely putting it down until I finished. This is particularly noteworthy because I don’t generally read many books written in the first person:) the writing and story-telling just pulled me along and kept me turning pages.
I just randomly picked this up book one day from a free pile, and quickly became enchanted with it. If you like fantasy, give this book a chance! (Fair warning, it’s part of an incomplete series that the author is in no rush to finish).
I loved so much about this book! I thought the world building was incredible — the magic system was so strong and seeped in just enough science to feel tangible, and each inn, university hall, and small town were fully realized to the point where I would Google a flower or an object Rothfuss mentioned, assuming it was real based on the level of detail he included, only to find it was just another detail of the world he’d slipped in. I will say that I didn’t enjoy the second half of the book as much – I felt the story lost a lot of its energy when Kvothe meets the woman he falls in love with, perhaps because their story was the least believable thing in a world full of carefully painted detail. Still, I’d definitely recommend this for fantasy fans — and if you need any more convincing, Lin-Manuel Miranda loves Rothfuss too!
Scratched the itch left by Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Although the chapters are short, the book is long. Yet when it ended, I wanted to jump immediately into the next book. A rich and beautiful fantasy world.
I never thought I would enjoy fantasy but this book gave me the bug. You care about all the characters and enjoyed the second book in the series just as well. I cannot hardly wait for the third. Try them you will like them!!
