Book Review: The Mystery of the Bermuda Triangle by Paul Moxham (2019) (Middle Grade)
(Mystery?) 2 Stars **
Ok. So, here’s the story. I think the author wrote this book in one day, probably with a looming deadline, not bothering to check facts about the Bermuda Triangle so the setting would have something to do with the plot, and also not bothering to fix the typos. Roll the presses! I’m still trying to figure out what the mystery is. I love books that capture the intrigue of the Bermuda Triangle, but this author didn’t bother to develop the setting or create a mystery or suspense—just a list of supposedly horrible creatures, one after another, chasing these hapless kids—or to write dialogue and narration that always makes sense. The language is stilted, the characters are stereotypical and flat, and the plot hackneyed.
British siblings Joe, Amy, and Sarah, along with their friend Will, were supposed to be on an adventurous vacation in the Caribbean with their parents. After they arrived at their destination, the parents got suddenly busy with something else and asked Uti, a trusted local guide, to take the kids out for a three day boating adventure so they could explore zoological specimens on remote islands. A violent storm separated Uti from the children, who found themselves adrift in the Caribbean Sea. They were saved by Captain Red and his companions, a group of escaped convicts, who promised to bring the kids where they belonged after he found the elusive white gorilla on an uncharted island..
Of course, the kids were soon separated from the motley crew and were confronted with oversized snakes, birds, bats, wolves, rock slides, friendly natives—a thrill? a minute—yada, yada, yada until they were reunited with Uti and eventually the too-busy parents. Ironically, the author puts the blame on the kids. “Even though their parents had been worried sick about them, now that explanations had been given and promises never to do anything like that again, it was one big happy group.” I guess it’s the kids’ fault that their parents sent them off on an exploratory boating adventure, a storm carried them off, they were rescued by a group whose agenda did not include the kids’ best interests, and the boat trip back just took a long time. Puhleeze!
Enjoyed reading this with my grandchildren
I am reading this book to my grandchildren, ages 7-11. They love it!
The Mystery of the Bermuda Triangle by Paul Moxham
This one starts out where the kids in the Caribbean and their tour and pilot again is Uti from Treasure island book
Uti is taking the kids on an adventure but they stop to load off supplies to Grace. He travels back to her place and the kids fall asleep on the boat.
They wake up during the storm, it’s broken from the lines and a boat crashes into them-it’s Capt. Red and he has other plans for them as his plans can’t be delayed.
On the island they sight the white gorilla and watch as Red’s pirates use drugs to make the animals incapacitated. They capture the smaller one and when the mother wakes up she gets what she wants.
Pirates know how much they can get for the white gorilla, they will try again…
Felt I was right there with the kids as they run from danger. So real the details and descriptions although I’ve never been to the area.
Kids have much knowledge about how to survive and they use those skills throughout this book.
Amazing events and you wonder if they will escape from the danger…
So many animals and very scary, even for me!
Received this review copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.
I grew up with Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys and this is a book I would have loved as a kid – as an adult, I still love it. I have read numerous books from this series and have loved them all. This one is even better than the ones I have previously read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A weekend holiday turns into a nightmare in the Bermuda Triangle!!
The Mystery Kids, Joe, Amy & Sarah are on a holiday with their friend Will, traveling on a cabin cruiser to The Caribbean. Uti, whom they had met on a previous trip in the Caribbean, was taking them to Oxley Island, which is located on the rim of the Bermuda Triangle. The island has some of the rarest animals on the planet and they had begged their parents to let them go. Uti was taking supplies to Grace a young zoologist who was doing research on the island. After visiting with Grace they were returning to the cruiser when Uti realized that he had forgotten the package that Grace had asked him to deliver for her. The kids had been so tired that they told him that they would go on to the cruiser while he fetched the package. While he was gone a tropical storm blew in and the cruiser was pushed out to sea. The kids woke up a little later and realized that they were adrift and that a larger ship was bearing down on them in the storm. What will happen, will the ship see them or will their cruiser be destroyed??? If so what will happen to the kids???
What did I like? This is Paul’s 11th book in this series plus he has a series called The Mystery Series Shorts, in addition to numerous other books that he has penned. I believe that I have read all but a couple of his books and even though he has geared them more to children than adults, I have enjoyed everyone that I have read. I have shared these with my children, grandchildren, and even my friend’s children and grandchildren. Paul has also donated some of his books to one of the local schools here. The feedback from the school was so incredible.
What will you like? Energizing, exciting, action-filled, fun and enjoyable to read. His characters are so wonderful and he has written his series taking place in the 1950s. So the character’s values are the same that I was taught and that I passed on to my children. Something kids today are lacking, which is a shame. Their interaction with adults is refreshing and so typical of that time frame. The loyalty between siblings and friends is shown on every page. His descriptions and attention to the details are so good that you will feel the wind on your face with the storm roaring around you. As you read you will then feel the excitement and action, with the tropical sun shining down and heating you up. Excellent read and book that should be added to not only your children’s library but yours too!
