Old Philip Haynes was never happier than when his family were at each other’s throats. Even after his death the terms of his will ensured they would keep on feuding. But now three people are dead and the accusations are flying. Can there really be a murderer in the family? Torn between friendship and duty, Angela Marchmont must find out the truth before the killer can strike again.
The Mystery at … Mystery at Underwood House is the latest exciting 1920s whodunit featuring reluctant ‘lady detective’ Angela Marchmont.

Three of the Haynes siblings have died mysteriously. Angela Marchmont is asked to investigate. Her own life is endangered because of it. Thus makes for an interesting read which kept me on tenterhooks.
Mystery at Underwood House by Clara Benson is an Angela Marchmont Mystery. Lady Sleuth Angela is called to Underwood House, her friend’s home, to investigate three family deaths that may or may not have been murdered. Relatives are dying off quickly, and Mrs. Underwood wanted to make sure her husband isn’t the next victim. A British country manor who-done-it that reminds me of Agatha Christie. Great characters, a stately country manor, and a plethora of suspects. Excellent!
Angela Marchmont is a cross between Phrene Fischer and Miss Marple. The plot to The Mystery at Underwood House is a familiar one to readers of Miss Fischer and Miss Marple mysteries. In fact, this book feels a lot 10 Little Indians. Dying family members, anniversary dinners, and a middle aged woman with a knack for solving mysteries. All very Christie-esque.
I’m not big on mysteries, and while this one left me a bit underwhelmed, I didn’t hate it. It was easy to read, somewhat predictable, but not awful. The worst thing about it was the underdeveloped characters; they were very two dimensional and stereotypical of Masterpiece Theater Mysteries.
I can hear the voice of Angela Lansberry from the tv show “Murder, she wrote” as I read author Clara Benson’s murder mysteries. I love being in the head of “detective” Larchmont as she tries to unravel the mystery and name the killer. Great book!
mystery and death abounds in a family pushed so very twisted…
Philip Hayes, who was a bit crazy, made a strange will for his family. A lot has to do with his orphaned Grandson, Guy. A very weird story but I had to read it till the end to find out what happened!!
Awesome story. Looking forward to reading the rest of the books.
Good mystery
What a strange family and even stranger will, putting one against the other. There are twists and turns in every direction. A good read generally. I have it on my list to read again somewhere in the future.
