Who poisoned the wealthy Emily Inglethorpe, and how did the murderer penetrate and escape from her locked bedroom? Sus-pects abound in the quaint village of Styles St. Mary—from the heiress’s fawning new husband to her two stepsons, her volatile housekeeper, and a pretty nurse who works in a hospital dispensary. Making his unforgettable debut, the brilliant Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is on … on the case.
“The key to the success of this style of detective novel,” writes Elizabeth George in her Introduction, “lies in how the author deals with both the clues and the red herrings, and it has to be said that no one bettered Agatha Christie at this game.”

A good introduction to Agatha Christie.
Very sophisticated
My kind of book. The character, Hercule Poirot, is one of the most unique personalities I’ve ever read. He makes the story. His sidekick and friend works well with Pairot. I thought I knew the villain, but was only partially correct.
Maybe it’s my age, early 70s, contributes to my fondness of Agatha Christi’s books.
No one can beat Christie!!
I used to read Agatha Christie all the time buts its probably been over a decade since I have. So I was excited to read her again. I did not realize this was her first book that made her famous. I loved it. I loved how there were so many plot twists and unknown things. Of course mystery is one of my favorite genres. It was a little confusing at …
It’s Agatha Christie after all.
I love Agatha Christie. Great books
It is a classic
Another great Agatha Christie mystery story
Christie introduces Hercule Poirot and Arthur Hastings in this book. It’s a match made in detective fiction heaven. Great book!
She’s the queen for a good reason, shes the best at what she did and this was no exception
This a interesting book. It has intrigue, good characters, twists and surprise ending. This is the first Hercule Poirot novel. There are many suspects so it isn’t an obvious easy mystery that you solve right off the bat, but one you have to keep changing how you think and who you think is the murderer and why. Typical Agatha Christie always good …
Christie is so good at mysteries – she is deservedly one of the greats of her genre – and I just love Poirot. He’s like a happier, more jovial version of Sherlock Holmes and is truly fun to uncover clues with. A word of warning, though, that there is (at least in the unedited version of this text) some offensive language and racist depictions that …
Although this novel is a Hurcule Poirot, it is told through the viewpoint of a friend of Poirot, Mr. Hastings. The viewpoint character is effective, since he basically has no detective instincts whatsoever, therefore not giving away what Poirot is thinking, which would ruin the mystery. The novel starts off with the death of Emily Cavendish. There …
3.5 stars. If I I grew up on Agatha Christie but haven’t read one in over a decade, this book brought a smile to my face. It’s hard to believe that this is Agatha Christie’s first published novel. The language is already so delightful, the wit on point, and the mystery amusing. The ego and thick headedness of the narrator irritated me multiple …
Even in her earliest published mystery, the brilliance of the mistress of classic mystery and the quirkiness of Poirot, her favourite male detectives are clear. In this story, Poirot is invited to help unravel the twisted stands of guilt and complicity in the murder of a wealthy, elderly woman. Clearly, someone in the family has done it, but as is …
Love Hercule Poirot and this is a good one!
one of Christie’s best
Dortmunder and water. What could possibly go wrong?
I’ve always loved Christie’s books, and this one is one of my favorites.
