Her dad’s job is with the dead . . . and he’s bringing his work home with him.Once again, seventeen-year-old Riley Smith is the new kid in school and her dad’s career has her back to being dubbed a freak. Truth is, she’s a much bigger freak than her classmates think. The only company she keeps these days is the dead who follow Dad home from work. She can see them. She can speak to them. And Fate … Fate seems to think she can help them solve their last problems so that they can move on to the other side. Which is odd, because with the loss of her mother and her father’s alcoholism, she’s got enough problems of her own. But nothing could prepare her for the next tormented young spirit who darkens Riley’s door. The young woman’s death wasn’t the accident everyone believes. Soon Riley finds herself face-to-face with the killer and her only protection comes in the form of another spirit, Hayden, a boy her age with a heart-melting smile and understanding eyes that make her feel safe. If she can escape becoming the killer’s next victim, Riley knows she’ll have to help Hayden move on too, but what if she can’t let him go?

Loved this book. Read it in one day. Already read the second in the series and can’t wait for the third. You’ll be sucked in too!
After reading The Shadow Falls series and This Heart of Mine by C.C. Hunter, I will read basically anything she publishes. There is always a beautiful amount of heart and depth to her characters that pull me in and wrap me in their stories. One Foot in the Grave was no different than her other stories in this aspect. I adored getting to know Riley, Kelsey, and the rest of these characters. This story was different spin on the YA PNR genre and fun to escape into.
The only thing that I became a little frustrated with was the ending. It wasn’t really a cliffhanger, everything did wrap up nicely with the majority of my questions being answered. I honestly just wanted more and I am happy that this series will continue and book 2 should be released soon and I will definitely be adding it to my Kindle library.
I voluntarily received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Riley Smith’s father is a mortician who makes the dead more better looking and look alive inside the coffin. One would think he rubs shoulders with the dead, but the truth us, it’s his daughter that deals with the spirits. Yes, Riley sees ghosts, feels their chillingly cold vibes and as much as possible, helps them cross over the light. She’s had this experience for more than a year now, except this time, she encounters one that’s warm, clingy and looks oh so handsomely alive..
But this isn’t only Riley’s dilemma. Lately she feels like his father is turning into an alcoholic and she’s discovering mysteries that surrounds her long departed mother.
Hayden Parker isn’t like any other ghosts. He’s different and he doesn’t really seem intent to see the light. Being with Riley has made him felt more alive and happy unlike never before. He helps her with her predicaments with wayward spirits but doesn’t want to be helped with his own issues. Together, they are a tandem to beat, if only both of them were alive.
I don’t know how CC Hunter does it, but I’ve no doubt in my mind that every book she’s penned becomes a must read in my list. One Foot in the Grave got me sitting at the edge of my seat, one foot dangling, the other one bent under my knee, hunchbacked, hands gripped and my spectacled eyes bloodshot from reading during the ghostly hours of the night.
Yes, I thought this book with a creepy-sounding title deserved to be perused in the middle of the night. I knew it would throw me off the loop and would make me nervous & frightened. CC Hunter delivers… OMG. I wasn’t able to sleep nor even dared wink, because The Mortician’s Daughter is so hauntingly good, beautifully scary and astoundingly ghostly. Love love love every minute of it. I don’t mind the cliffhanger ending; I live for this kind of stories! I am absolutely reading the second book right after this review!
CC Hunter never disappoints. This clever, endearing paranormal YA romantic mystery had me smiling and flipping pages the whole way through.
did go the why wish it did
Starting off, I really liked the plot to this one – it was creative and could have gone in many different directions. The teen angst is a bit thick, and would best appeal to a teenage reader, but overall the characters were likeable. However, where it lost me was the fiercely abrupt ending- it leaves a LOT to be desired. Way too many pieces of the story unresolved which left me feeling frustrated. I understand leaving a cliffhanger, but the story literally just stops mid-stream. I realize this is the first in a series, but the author could have done a much better job transitioning at the end in a way that would leave you curious, not aggravated.
A lot of fun and a great story!
Riley is a teen girl who can see dead people. Nobody else knows what she can do. She helps them resolve issues before they move on.
I enjoyed reading this story, however, there were typos.
The character development was good and the plot was interesting. I like Riley and would like to read more of her experiences.
Loved this book
It would be a good book for kids to understand that they are not the only person to be picked on at school and sum times feel like they are a freak we all do at times.
Cute and entertaining read, can’t wait for the next one
I am so looking forward to the next book.
well written twisty plot made me want to read the rest of the series. So I did. Loved it as a series but also as a stand alone.
I enjoyed the first two books and was disappointed the next one isn’t out yet.
I love the way C.C. Hunter writes she is an amazing author and can always make you laugh and cry in the same chapter. I love that about her, all her books are somewhat of a tearjerker but they always have something funny in them. In this book 17 year old Riley is the new girl in school. Her father is a mortician and his work is following her home because she can see and speak to the dead. She helps them cross on to the afterlife. But then she meets Hayden and he’s not like the other ghosts though she doesn’t know why. I don’t want to give too much away and spill it for someone who hasn’t read the book yet. The author leaves us with a major cliff hanger at the end though making us ask “what happens now with Hayden?” I highly recommend this first book in the Mortician’s daughter series it is a really great read and I highly enjoyed it.
A good premise, however, I miss stories that can be told in one novel. I suppose I am taking out my irritation on this book, but I also did not care enough about the characters and the plot to read another in the series.
I loved the twist where she can see spirits of the dead.
Liked the story and it was a fast, easy read. The romantic turmoil of the teen girl character is predictable and cheesy but tolerable. Looking forward to reading the second book in the series.
really what I wasn’t expecting. author did a good job of disguising the outcome.
Very enjoyable. Was disappointed when it ended. I want the next one.
