Have you ever hit rock bottom? I embarrassingly have. It’s why I’m wearing my girl’s decorative scarf over my head, clutching her lady drink to my chest, and singing ever so softly to Joni Mitchell while swaying back and forth. This is what therapists refer to as LOSING IT. Oldest story in the book: boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy screws up MASSIVELY, girl tells boy to suffocate in the … girl tells boy to suffocate in the fruits of his very own unborn children.
Heard it before? I’m sure you have.
So what’s so different about this story? Well, it’s about me, The Modern Gentleman, New York City’s top advice columnist, and my rather ungraceful downfall from my pristinely polished pedestal.
It’s about a girl I met who threw all my proven theories to the wind and left me awkward, needy, and absolutely head-over-wingtipped shoes in love.
This is a story about June Lacy and how she single-handedly dismantled The Modern Gentleman.

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is one of my favorite romantic comedy films. The Modern Gentleman takes that premise, spins it on its head and kicks it in the… shin. Meghan puts her own twist on that storyline, and the result was uproariously funny. Wes and June were the epitome of opposites attracting—they couldn’t be more different. An advice columnist to the male masses, Wes’ claim to fame is schooling men in all things gentlemanly. From grooming to behavior to relationships, Wes prides himself on guiding frat boys into polished and mature men.
June July is less than impressed by Wes, and she doesn’t mind letting him know it. From their not quite cute first meeting through each of their dates gone wrong, she’s schooling Wes on life and challenging him in ways he’s never experienced before. All his go-to moves, the ones he routinely gives out to his followers, are not working at all with June, and the normally put-together and unflappable guy is constantly left scrambling. The banter, the sexual tension, the hilarious situations and the sweet, sexy, slow burn romance blend brilliantly into an unputdownable, addictive story positively brimming with swoon.
Heart-warming, simmering with heat and laugh-out-loud hilarious, The Modern Gentleman was one of the most charming, endearing and entertaining romantic comedies I’ve read in a long time, and it was exactly what I wanted to read right now. I practically inhaled it in a day, and I enjoyed every second of this feel-good, flirty and fun romcom. Five smooches from me for The Modern Gentleman by Meghan Quinn!

What a fun story line.
Standalone with no cliffhangers.
Wes needs a woman to date for his job. The problem is he has fallen for her and now he is afraid to tell her the truth.
Then June learns the truth.
Love the disaster dates and banter, I laughed out loud.
I listened to this on Chirp.
This book reminds me so much of Hitch with Will Smith. The smooth Modern Gentleman, Wes, is an advice columnist who tells men how to be a gentleman and to get the women of their dreams. He is tasked to write a column about falling in love as the Modern Gentleman. At that time, he meets June, who is an actress as she is walking the dog. She doesn’t even have a cell phone and honestly, she turned me off a bit because she was a bit judgmental, although not consistently and many times, she’s funny and sweet, so that kept me coming back. That and Wes, who was a sweetheart. And his best friends were hilarious. This is a sloooooow burn romance as June has been hurt previously and she really needs someone who is willing to get to know her slowly and not rush her. All this and the inevitable fall due to a lie that anyone can see coming (the column…)
There were some parts of the story that had me dying of laughter. Generally, a lighthearted rom-com that I overall enjoyed via the audiobook.
Speaking of the audiobook, I’ve been on a Connor Crais kick and he was, just wow, in this book. There’s one scene where I literally couldn’t catch my breath because I was laughing so much and while the content was funny, Connor Crais’ performance was epic. So great. And Kelsey Navarro is always great too (she came in towards the end of the audiobook) so the narration team is excellent.
4.5 stars
This audiobook is so awesome and so much fun to listen to! It’s mostly narrated by Connor Crais with Kelsey Navarro at the end. It is a wonderful romcom that caused me to laugh out loud many times! Short enough that you can even finish it in one day!
Wes is the man behind The Modern Gentleman advice column. His boss wants him to find a woman to date and to document it in his column. Enter June Lacy, a woman he meets in an unusual “meet cute.” She believes in taking things slow. Their dates were memorable and funny, his best friends (Roman and Caden) were hilarious, and this was just an all around fun romance. What can go wrong? Well, when he starts to have feelings for June, it turns out everything.
This is my second audiobook by Meghan Quinn and I am going to definitely check out her backlist.
”She specifically told me to crawl into my own scrotum and drown in my sperm. I’m pretty positive when a girl wants my unborn children to kill me, she’s not going to want to talk to me again.”
Meghan Quinn always has a smart and witty way with words and the brilliant mental imagery that they can create, and ‘The Modern Gentleman’ in its entirety is a great example of that skill.
In this standalone rom-com the leading characters, Wes and June, meet in a moment facilitated by a 3-eared dog and a pile of dog poop. Most of the book is told from Wes’ point of view and then it switches to June’s perspective at the very end. For this story, it’s a technique that works perfectly. Wes is the author of an online advice column entitled The Modern Gentleman. A directive from his employer puts Wes in the position of needing to start and develop a relationship with a woman as a series of lessons for his readers – a “how-to” example in real life. June has very old-fashioned attitudes about dating, which really keep her in the dark about what goes on in Internet trends, so although she knows Wes is a writer, she has no clue what he actually writes. She also has no idea that he is documenting their dating history for his column. You know from the beginning that it’s going to blow up in the end. Yet The author executes the story so well that the predictability is actually anticipation to see what happens exactly, and how it happens.
I thought both characters were likable, as were the key secondary characters. Some of the funny scenes did make me laugh out loud, which is always a plus. The character growth displayed in the story is excellent, and I loved the ending. There are some excellent pop culture references sprinkled throughout the book, and that’s also fun.
Do you want abs of steel with minimal effort? Then this is the book for you! I was belly laughing so hard that I had to stop reading so I could catch my breath. But humor isn’t all this book has to offer. There is also heart. So much of it. I always love reading romance novels from the hero’s perspective so I thoroughly enjoyed that most of the book was told by Wes. Yet June was so sassy (I fell for her at the meet cute just as much as Wes did) that her short narration was utterly amazing. I actually wished there had been more. Also, when June tells you to listen to the song, DO IT. Bonus points for the music video. Happy reading.
OMG! I laughed so hard I was crying when reading this book! From the first meeting to the first date to all the quirky dates in between they have on their way to their HEA! This was such an amazing read!
This was such a fun, fast paced read. I laughed out loud more than I could count. Meghan Quinn has penned a story line that would make a fabulous movie. A quirky heroine, swoony hero, ridiculous antics, hilarious humor made for the perfect rom-com. The Modern Gentleman is told in mainly the male POV. Wes is a writer for a newspaper column and is known as the modern gentleman. Men write into to him asking their dating and relationship advice and his boss has just given him a task to chronicle his attempt at courting a woman from start to finish. June was hilarious. She did not make it easy for Wes! He had to work HARD to court her. Some of humor was slightly over the top at times but I still loved and highly recommend to Meghan Quinn and rom-com lovers.
I was hooked from the first page. This is the funniest rom-com I’ve ever read, and I loved every single page of it. I laughed out loud more times than I can count, sometimes laughing myself to tears because it was hilarious.
Great writing, likeable characters, excellent grovel, and a cute happily ever after.
I would love to see this made into a movie, it would be fantastic.
Teasing tension!
You know up front that things are going to go horribly wrong between Wes and June, but you’re not sure when or how. That creates the most delicious tension throughout the whole book that I loved! Not angsty by any means, just deliciously quirky and fun!
Their meet-cute starts with a steaming pile of dog poo and their first date ends him in the ER after a gnarly shuffleboard game gone wrong. That is all you need to know about the wonderment that is Wes and June in The Modern Gentleman. This book had me in stitches. Every time I thought a situation for poor Wes couldn’t get any worse, it did. Okay, seriously — where did Meghan Quinn come up with the ideas for the awful dates that Wes and June go on?
I absolutely adored how June took suave, sophisticated Wes and turned him into a bumbling fool. For a guy who authors an advice column, it is absolutely brilliant that none of his tricks work on June herself. So of course you just know things are going to blow up in his face since he’s kept the true nature of his work from her. (Heck, Wes says as much in the prologue as he then flashes back to their relationship and how it fell apart.)
This story is told mostly through Wes’ POV, with a few instances where June hysterically hijacks the story to tell her side of things. June really is one of a kind, unlike any other heroine I’ve seen before. She’s quirky and modest, and really makes Wes put in the effort to court her. It’s a wonderful build to their relationship, and I loved these characters so, so much!
I need more of Roman. Please, MQ, let this be a start to a new series! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
I loved this book! From beginning to end, it was an enjoyable, playful romp through the ol’ “boy meets girl/boy screws up royally” theme. And I have to say, I really LOVED the ending. It was a surprise I hadn’t expected. Well done, Meghan Quinn!
Holy cow!! RomCom of the year! There were so many times I had tears streaming down my face and couldn’t catch my breath from laughing! The Modern Gentleman was an amazing, hilarious and sexy read! Hands down, my favorite book from Meghan!
Wes met June, Wes really liked June, Wes screwed up and lost June…Would Wes be able to win her back?
The shuffle board scene…I was dying! The dolls…I almost peed my pants! Seriously, I really don’t think I have laughed that much in a long time! It was the perfect getaway from the craziness in the world! And the Porter and Marley shoutout!!
I was initially skeptical if I would like this romance written from the man’s perspective, but I loved it!! I laughed nonstop and had a hard time putting it down to take care of my own work. The MCs are strong, but it really is the hilarious side characters that made this book so much fun. Meghan is such a refreshingly brilliant writer – she easily tackles nearly every subgenre in contemporary romance. Highly recommend!!
You know those books where you feel so emerged into the story that you can’t wait to see what happens next? Where the dialogue is so hilarious you find yourself laughing out loud right along with the characters? This book is ABSOLUTELY the best of them. It’s hilarious, Wes is swoon-worthy, June is freaking epic in the way she responds to him.
I can’t say enough without spoiling it, so let me just say this: if you love rom-com’s, you NEED this book. I’m ordering a paperback just so I can have Wes in all his beautiful beardness sitting on my shelf.
This is a fantastic book. I loooooved Wes and June’s first date so much! It was hilarious, I haven’t laughed this much in a long time, I had tears in my eyes and my stomach hurt from laughing. 5
This was a fun, laugh until you cry, crazy story. I was so sucked in to the story, when I looked down at the percentage of completion, to my surprise, the book is almost over! I was sad yet excited to see how it ended.
It’s starts off where Wes sounds like he belongs in the Loony Bin . He had completely lost his sanity. After you see the state he current is in, he recaps his full story. Wes explains what happens to him from the start until… his screw up.
Maybe you can say that the confrontation isn’t botched from that point since he should have been up front and honest to begin with however that is the moment it holds you at the edge of your seat in suspense.
Wes’ personality was wonderfully refreshing. Different from many hot male lead characters in stories. He had flaws, a little unlucky, and is far from the perfect man that he tries to be.
June is a whirlwind! She kept me guessing, never knowing what will come out of her mouth next. The aspiring Broadway star is beautiful, witty, and not afraid to tell you how it is. June seems like she is the only woman that can take Wes down a notch.
I enjoy Meghan Quinn’s books where she has the character speak to you as the reader in a journal like way. I think it gives the story something unique, special and creates far more entertainment in my opinion.
Add her ability to bring in characters from her previous books to the story made me extremely excited . To me, it is amazing to see how everyone plays out in Meghan Quinn’s World which makes me want to be a part of.
This is a world you don’t want to miss out on, especially The Modern Gentleman!
Fall in love, pee your pants laughing, enjoy this awesome story! I know I sure did (minus the peeing )
What a perfect romantic comedy! Wes and June are one of my favorite new couples! Through an embarrassing awkward first date and a surprise performance, this unlikely couple proves that patience is a virtue, and not every little thing can be predicted.
If you’re looking for a light-hearted read with some sexy times and a little bit of “What the heck did you do”.. I highly recommend this book!
NO SPOILERS!
I really enjoyed Wes and June’s cute, sweet, sexy, swoon-worthy, and hilarious story in The Modern Gentleman. The storyline and characters were great, and it had all of Meghan Quinn’s signature humor and heat.
The Modern Gentleman was a little different than Quinn’s other romantic comedies, since it was more novella than full-length book, and I would’ve loved more, especially from June’s POV, but it was still very enjoyable and I was happy with the ending.
This may be one of my favorite Meghan Quinn books yet!
With a title like this, one could expect a suave, well put-together gent who’s calm, cool, and collected. Wes might be struggling with that though. He’s off his game when it comes to June, and he’s anything but calm, cool, and collected. This man is a walking contradiction. How he acts is completely different than the way his advice dictates. He doesn’t mean it to be that way, but like I said, he’s struggling. Big time. And you’ll fall in love with him through the whole thing! He’s charming, sweet, goofy, awkward, and completely lovable. Wes is definitely a new favorite.
June is amazing! This woman is a tornado swirling into Wes’s life. She’s quirky and fun, chaotic and a bit old fashioned. She’s headstrong and makes Wes work for her affections. I love her personality and her sense of self-awareness. She’s such an amazing person, both inside and out. It’s easy to see why Wes is so discombobulated around her.
This book is hilarious. And not just ha-ha funny, but snort-laugh funny. MQ will keep you laughing throughout the entire book while giving you plenty of feels, some scorching heat, and plenty of that tortuous slow-burn she’s so good at. This one is a definite slam-dunk winner.
