The #1 New York Times bestseller—a thrilling new romance from E L James, author of the phenomenal bestselling Fifty Shades Trilogy. London, 2019. Life has been easy for Maxim Trevelyan. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he’s never had to work and he’s rarely slept alone. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family’s noble title, wealth, and … noble title, wealth, and estates, and all the responsibility that entails. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face.
But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and Maxim’s longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name. Just who is Alessia Demachi? Can Maxim protect her from the malevolence that threatens her? And what will she do when she learns that he’s been hiding secrets of his own?
From the heart of London through wild, rural Cornwall to the bleak, forbidding beauty of the Balkans, The Mister is a roller-coaster ride of danger and desire that leaves the reader breathless to the very last page.

This is intimately romantic! I love this kind of book added with unique thrilling plots. I love the main characters, the gentleman handsome Maxim and the talented gorgeous Alessia. Their love story will makes you fall in love. I want to see more on their happy ending. I hope there’s gonna be a sequel of this book and hope this will gonna have a movie too just like the Fifty Shades of Grey. I really love all the books of E.L. James. All are 5 stars for me.
This book was so damn boring.
Maxim and Alessia are quite the odd pairing. He is the wealthy, multi talented and newly throned. She the beautiful yet plain, poor house keeper. I’ve seen many reviews and some I agree with and some I don’t. This is definitely a book that people either love or hate it. For me it was just ok. I found too many similarities to 50. I would’ve loved for Ms. James to have stepped outside of the millionaire/virgin trope. I felt the story picked up towards the end and had me invested but I think on the flip side that this couple deserved an epilogue
This isn’t 50 Shades of Grey but I still love the whole story! Very well written and not predictable. One of few books I’d consider reading again.
Coming from E.L. James, disappointing. I felt like I was reading someone that was being molested. Enjoyed the main character, but otherwise, NOPE.
This wasn’t what I was expecting, but I enjoyed the characters and the story as it unfolded. Not my favorite, but I’m glad i read it.
I was sorely disappointed. I expected at least a little more out of James, but the switching back and forth from first person to third person really threw me for a loop…I couldn’t do it; not sure how I finished the book, but I did. Would’ve been a great story if the POV was fixed.
I have started reading “The Mister” when it got released. But I must admit that after I read the first few pages I didn’t got into the story and put it aside. Then I got the opportunity to meet the author in October for a signing and of course I wanted to read the book before the signing. So I started to read it again and in Chapter 3 I was totally hooked and couldn’t stop reading. I feel in love with Alessia & Maxim. I know that many people thought it will be a lot like Fifty Shades, but the story is so different and so much more! You have to read the book and you will know what I am talking about.
Hope there will be a second book!
Major disappointment after reading Fifty Shades of Grey series.
Definitely opposites attract. I love how Maxim is so humble while being an aristocrat and Alessia coming from a humble upbringing, is so worldly and so talented. The clash between them is exactly what brings them together. Alessia’s turbulent past crashes into their beautiful love story leaving me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t want the book to end.
I love it …
Love can grow against all odds
What starts as a relationship between a cleaner/maid, Alessia and her employer, Maxim, is an interesting twist on the Cinderella story. I’ve secretly loved that story for years but never let myself believe it could really happen.
The Mister, from E.L. James, is rich and layered. James shares the story of two people who evolve into their entire potential of who they are meant to be.
I found it exciting as well as heartwarming. Set in Britain, the hero is grieving over the loss of his brother (the Lord of Trevelyan) who ran the family estate. Upon his brother’s sudden death, it becomes Maxim’s turn (as the spare) to come into his own nobility and title, albeit, reluctantly.
During this transition, a beautiful young “cleaner” comes into his home with talents and secrets Maxim is yet to discover. Stumbling upon some of those secrets is how the tension and chemistry develop. This Billionaire/Virgin story will charm you with a lot of “firsts” for its talented yet naïve heroine.
I loved it – Five stars.

What can I say? I loved the Fifty Shades trilogy by this author, so I bought THE MISTER, hoping for another great escape.
The premise is fine – wealthy, good-looking bachelor, who has always had his way with women, becomes lord of the manor when his older brother suddenly dies. Not only is he thrust into a position he doesn’t want, but when he could have any woman in the world, he falls for the woman who cleans his house. She is an immigrant without a passport, trouble right there. She also can’t speak English well. So what is the basis of their relationship? Apparently sex and the fact that she doesn’t know his lordly position and, therefore, can’t fall for his power or money.
I loved the setting – London, Cornwall, even the Balkans. I even loved the sex, though, it is far tamer than that in any of the Fifty Shades books.
What didn’t work for me? The constant introspection, something I hadn’t loved in the Fifty Shades books but that felt even more annoying here. The ending, which was simplistic. The kidnapping attempts, which felt far-fetched.
THE MISTER was written the way romances were written thirty years ago. But others in that field have moved on. When they deal with subjects like sex trafficking, they do it right. This author did not. Genre writes give their characters depth. This author did not. Even the piano-playing element, which was one of the few things the characters had in common, felt contrived.
Sigh.
Wow!! James our did herself. I could not put this book down. Every page brought a new turn of events, I had to keep reading. The story is so romantic!! A must read!
Loved this book! Kept me on my toes; great twists and turns!
Totally putdownable
Finally! After more than two months, I’m done. Unlike other readers, I was not delirious with anticipation, but merely curious, as I had been for FSOG. I read all three books, plus Grey – which was my favourite. Did I like FSoG? Not really, but it was OK since I did manage to read all three books, although I hated book three.
Our first meeting with Maxim did not endear him to me: he’s just had sex with his beloved late brother Kit’s widow. Catherine. They’ve known each other a long time, but Kit was buried two days before! It’s gross, but at least, we we’re shown how he is, not told. Then he does a full one-eighty, cured by his cleaner’s beauty, innocence, helplessness, and sweetness. Such stupendous character growth. Then we have the excruciatingly slow burn, the first 44% of the book is spent in Alessia’s and Maxim’s heads and their thoughts on the other’s irresistible gorgeousness. I guess you know by now that Maxim’s POV is in first person, while Alessia’s is in third; it did not bother me, although it’s a bit weird.
I wonder if the author had planned to write a historical romance and then changed her mind. It would have been slightly more palatable. Maybe. After the first kiss, it became so schmaltzy, I set the book aside for some time; it’s not as if I would forget the plot, would I? At 44% I took a break for a few weeks. We were still at lusty thoughts, googoo eyes, some kissing and groping; no real action of any sort had happened – I was still hoping that the suspenseful part would take off, at some point, eventually – so I read several other books in the meantime. The Mister is just so painfully, excruciatingly slow and uneventful, I found it hard to stay focused. Then, I had a little free time, I read until 50%, the deed was finally done, and it was very anticlimactic. And I took another extended break for several weeks.
I was stuck waiting, so I decided to be brave and finish The Mister, for the sake of being able to say I finished it. I will admit to speed reading and skimming. It’s not like I was waiting with bated breath for something to happen. Ms. James has a talent for descriptions, and describe she does, every single little thing in minute detail. Every thought is described and repeated ad nauseam in never-ending internal monologues; actually I shouldn’t complain because the dialogues are even blander. Then they have sex and more sex and nothing to write home about. At 65%, I held my breath (sort of, very briefly). It seemed the story was finally about to take off, but it was a false alarm, and we more or less went back to where we were, being told all sorts of meaningless stuff. At around 82%, we’re finally, finally! getting somewhere! It was a relief to see two characters that were more than paper dolls – Caroline and Anatoli. I had hoped for what looked like an original plot twist – silly me! – but at least, it concluded logically, amidst all the small inconsistencies and contradictions that persisted throughout the narrative.
On the bright side, there was not a single typo in sight. It’s a shame though that the author is probably too big for her book to be properly edited as The Mister would have benefited from being trimmed down by half. I found being stuck in the heads of two lifeless characters for 500 pages truly unbearable. Now I can say that I am done with E. L. James.
A very good and quick read.
I adore E.L. James books…Fifty Shades trilogy was phenomenal! I couldn’t resist trying her next series…and I hope it is a series. I really liked this book and I have a feeling that the character Maxim, is related to Christian Grey. I can’t wait for book two! Come on Erica…get writing!!
A definitely what will happen next.
Loved the love story.
