The #1 New York Times bestseller—a thrilling new romance from E L James, author of the phenomenal bestselling Fifty Shades Trilogy. London, 2019. Life has been easy for Maxim Trevelyan. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he’s never had to work and he’s rarely slept alone. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family’s noble title, wealth, and … noble title, wealth, and estates, and all the responsibility that entails. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face.
But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and Maxim’s longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name. Just who is Alessia Demachi? Can Maxim protect her from the malevolence that threatens her? And what will she do when she learns that he’s been hiding secrets of his own?
From the heart of London through wild, rural Cornwall to the bleak, forbidding beauty of the Balkans, The Mister is a roller-coaster ride of danger and desire that leaves the reader breathless to the very last page.

The Mister By EL James is a sweet romance. I really enjoyed the book. However, it did take me a while to get into it. I feel that some areas were skimmed over and other areas we needed more information. I feel like there was a lot of build up for a quick ending. I would love if she decided to continue with this book universe and use some of the other side characters as her main focus in other books. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes sweet romances.
The book was just average. Not what I expected from the Fifty Shades author. Wouldn’t recommend spending so much for a disappointing ho hum story.
The Mister is sweet and full of feeling. Alessia is a survivor. This woman perseveres and you want so much for her. You couldn’t ask for a better hero than Maxim. Sweet, swoony, and wants the best for Alessia. I loved their interactions together. They were adorable together and I enjoyed watching them get to know each other. The story invokes many feelings as it touches on family obligations and human trafficking. The journey is difficult but filled with hope and love.
I really enjoyed the audio of this story. The narrators are great, and I enjoyed getting to hear a piano play during those moments. I felt like I was watching everything play out.
Total Snoozefest. I was very disappointed with this book. I felt like the plot was dragging and by the end I was skipping passages just so I could finish it. When I got to the end, it pretty much stopped abruptly so I expect that it will be continued in another book. Definitely not enough to hold my interest for any more of these.
It was just fine. Nothing really exceptional. It did not start off very well for me but it later got more interesting. Many loose ends and lots of unaddressed topics in the book.
This book was a must read by E.L. James
I hate waiting for the next one.
I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t as detailed steamy as the Grey saga.
Writing in first and third person.Loved the flow between .
2.5 Stars
I wanted to love this book. There’s something I love and has drawn me to FSOG and since I believe authors get better with every published book, I thought this would be wonderful. I was disappointed.
This book is long. It dragged so much in spots I found myself skimming to get to the story. There’s needless detail about the scenery, about staff, about nonsense I just don’t care about. It could’ve been cut by about 200 pages and been the perfect length.
There was such an opportunity to shed light on a huge humanitarian issue in this book (and since it was such a major plot point, I thought that’s where it would go) and instead, it lacked detail and rested on stereotypes.
The ending felt like this was leading into a second book. I have zero desire to get answers to questions that should have been wrapped up in 500 pages.
Enjoyable!
This book had a lot to live up to with a predecessor like ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and even though it is a romance, it is very toned down and quite different. I take my hat off to E.L. James for being brave enough to change direction after such an outstanding success.
Her new characters, Maxim and Alessia, should not be compared to her previous ones and if one separates the two stories, then this book becomes interesting.
It is about two lost people, learning about each other, falling in love and caring for each other and desperately trying to survive.
They have strengths, they have weaknesses and they come across as quite human.
I enjoyed this story and all its twists and turns and wonder what this author will turn her pen to next.
