In this twisting time-travel thriller, a woman faints on the eve of her wedding—and awakens at the turn of the century in her grandmother’s body . . . The night before she is supposed to get married, Shay Garrett has no idea that a glimpse into her grandmother’s antique Chinese mirror will completely transform her seemingly ordinary life. But after a bizarre blackout, she wakes up to find … wakes up to find herself in the same house—but in the year 1900. Even stranger, she realizes she is now living in the body of her grandmother, Brandy McCabe, as a young woman. Meanwhile, Brandy, having looked into the same mirror, awakens in Shay’s body in the present day—and discovers herself pregnant.
As Rachael—the woman who links these two generations, mother to one and daughter to another—weaves back and forth between two time periods, this imaginative thriller explores questions of family, identity, and love. Courageous, compassionate Shay finds herself fighting against the confines of a society still decades away from women’s liberation, while Brandy struggles to adapt to the modern world she has suddenly been thrust into. The truth behind this inexplicable turn of events is more complex than either woman can imagine—and The Mirror is a tribute to the triumph of the female spirit, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

I am a voracious reader and have read hundreds if not thousands of book over the years so when one sticks out and isn’t forgotten, it must have touched me in some way and been awfully good. This is one such book.
I read this book over 25 years ago and have never forgotten it. I even bought a copy last Christmas for a friend just so she could read it. It’s about a young girl who is transported thru a mirror she finds in an attic, back in time to her grandmother’s time. can’t say more or I will give away too much but wow what a cool story! and really makes you realize how hard life was for some women way way back then. But such a wonderful story about love, sacrifice and growing up and second chances. I normally read fantasy, paranormal types and horror and the like but I also love time travel books and this one is a must read for anyone! It’s one of those rare books you never forget. I am so glad my neighbor loaned it to me back then. Everyone should read this and I know you’ll love it!
I really enjoyed the characters in this story. If you’re looking for lots of time travel conundrums or if you are seeking a deep love story then look elsewhere. But if you want to read an interesting study of two historical eras thru the eyes of two young women thrust into timeframes very different from when they grew up then you should find this a satisfying and fun read. And a little time travel and a bit of romance add to the enjoyment.
The first time read this book I was a teenager. I loved it! I lost it years ago but never forgot it. Then I went searching for it and found it again, this time in my fifties. I wondered if I would like it after so many years. I still love it! I have it in my stash of favorite books and will never let it go!!! My daughters love it as well. It is timeless and a book you will read over and over again!!!
I owned this in hardback a long time ago. Thrilled now to have it in my ebook collection. One of my favorite time travel books! Shay Garrett peers into an antique mirror on the eve of her wedding in 1978 and falls unconscious only to wake in the body of her own grandmother Brandy on the eve of her wedding in 1900. I liked how both Shay and Brandy handled the switch.
I read this book in high school. I love it than, would read it again.
I originally read this book when it was first published. I found it touching and very memorable. When the opportunity came to buy it for my Kindle, I did and read it again in one day. Loved it again. I can see it is one book I can reread again and again.
I read this book a couple of decades ago and still remember so much about — excellent storyline
LOVE this book. I read it many years ago & tried to find it in past years. I think it went out of print, but was released again. I think the ending is a little different, but it held my attention throughout.
Great Gothic read with family saga, historical fiction, and time travel.
I read this book in the ’70’s and loaned it to someone and it was never returned. When it was reprinted, I bought it as quickly as I could. I read it every few years. It’s a truly original time-travel. It’s absorbing, fascinating and mind-bending. After you’ve finished the book, you’ll think of questions. “Well, if that happened, this would have happened”. “What would have happened then?” I would recommend it in a hot second.
Wonderful time travel novel!
Really good story with interesting twists and romance.
A look at our world from two different angles the then and the now and what it would be like to live in either one
Couldn’t put it down. This book carried me away to another era in time, which I loved.
A lifetime favourite
I read this book for the first time well over a decade ago and loved it. When I saw it come up again for a sale price I bought it to read again and loved it once more. It’s a lot of fun and highly recommended.
I’ve read this book so many times now that the cover is falling off. A wonderful, original story that I keep coming back to like an old friend.
The Mirror is a wonderful story about a granddaughter and grandmother who switch places in time on the eve of both of their wedding nights. Marlys does an excellent job of intertwining the time period differences that each woman has to deal with. I absolutely love this story and I re-read it every couple of years. For anyone who loves stories where people get placed out of their own time, will love this book.
Was one of my favorites this year
I read this book twice and loved it even more the second time around!! Many titles don’t hold up but the Mirror did just that. This unusual tale gets under your skin immediately and you can’t begin to figure out how it’s going to transpire. If you love well written intriguing tales that aren’t just your usual predictable stories, try Ms Millhiser’s wonderfully told tale “The Mirror”. You’ll be glad you did!!
