I think this is an excellent book, very interesting.
Could not get into it.
Loved it!
wonderful drama of real life, the joys and sorrows as a professional navigates helping women and families. I appreciated the stories having been a labor nurse in a more modern time, but found the scenarios very familiar. I think most women would enjoy this very well written book.
Dont watch the show first!
I really enjoyed reading about the life of a midwife. The characters were brought to life realistically. I gave this only 4 stars because one scene described by a person who witnessed it was quite graphic, making it difficult to get out of my mind. Aside from that, the rest of the book was clean.
It was heart-wrenching to hear what people went through in their lives. I loved the information and the descriptions of how life was in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Enjoyed every page. I could relate and compare to nursing in the United States in the 50’s.
Loved the PBS show and am enjoying the books. Different format. Interesting to see how midwives have earned their place in history.
Great information about formal midwifery in it’s early stages.
Great book, have to admit I am hooked on the series on PBS but loved the book as well!
Wonderful read!
I love the PBS show Call the Midwife, so I decided to read this book. The TV show is so well written, much more so than the book, which was disappointing. The descriptions of east end London were interesting; provided more detail than the show provides, but were also depressing.
Interesting and a good companion to the TV series (which I really enjoy!).
A look at the way health care was delivered in the 50’s and 60’s but more importantly the relationships and commitment of the midwives to there mothers to be.
If I could give it 10 stars I would! When the series came on BBC I was hooked from the beginning. The young ladies would have been about my mom’s age and though she didn’t live on the east side I felt like seeing their lives was a glimpse into my mom’s. The writing is wonderful and the stories are amazing. The book greatly enhanced my experience of watching the show.
One of the best books I have read in a LONG time!
I watched the series and it was good buy as usual the book was better.
Great, but not as good as the TV series 🙂
A must read and a must see the series on Netflix…..a great binge watch
