Down to earth nitty gritty about birthing and the women attending in London around WWII.
Wonderful book that inspired a great TV show. Heartwarming and incredibly human.
Wow, the saddest part is in the introduction when Worth talks about why the sense of family spiraled to the bottom of the hill in London’s dockside neighborhoods after WWII in the 1970s and 80s. Trade off was birth control and women’s lib…what a thought-provoking idea.
I read this before watching the series and I’m glad I did, though the show follows this book very closely in the first season. I learned so much about the time period and midwifery in an entertaining way.
Would like more deals in any midwife books
I love this book and the series based on the book. I’ve actually talked to a nurse who worked in the east end of London during the 1950’s and she says the book is quite realistic.
I loved this book + the show with the same name.
Hard to get into. Too detailed didn’t finish
Loved this book. I had watched the BBC production of the book, and wanted to read the original autobiography. Very enjoyable.
Watched the videos. Absolutely love it.
I love the PBS series so I could picture each character in the book.
Awesome read. Entertaining with true stories, sad at times. Reminded me of my own visiting nurse days. I could appreciate the funny situations and also found it very educational about the poverty back then.
My favorite book so far! Outstanding!
Great book based on a real life situation, of the nurses who worked as midwives in the slums of London after World War II. Shows a now gone way of life and culture, that of the Cockness.
Loved the stories about life in he docklands of London in the early twentieth century and the people who cared for the poor and lonely people. Makes us realize how lucky we are.
I watched the television series based on this book and became interested in the book. It is an interesting glimpse into social history.
Great book(s)
I was introduced to this series through the PBS series of the same name that was based on this series of books. The story is about a young midwife who has come to work with a group of Anglican nuns who live and work in an impoverished area of London. I found the book a bit darker than the TV series but still quite engaging.
loved the series and this gave me a start to what I have watched!
I only wish this book was longer!
