A remarkable new voice in American fiction enchants readers with a moving and uplifting novel that celebrates the miracle of life. In The Midwife of Hope River, first-time novelist Patricia Harmon transports us to poverty stricken Appalachia during the Great Depression years of the 1930s and introduces us to a truly unforgettable heroine. Patience Murphy, a midwife struggling against disease, … disease, poverty, and prejudice—and her own haunting past—is a strong and endearing character that fans of the books of Ami McKay and Diane Chamberlain will take into their hearts, as she courageously attempts to bring new light, and life, into an otherwise cruel world.

Very, very good!! Patsy Harman is such a marvelous author. This novel sets in during the Great Depression in West Virginia. The main character is Patience, a midwife, and it was so cool because I can see Patsy in this character. Phenomenal historic fiction dealing with one of my favorite topics, midwives. Harman does such a great, believable job …
The Great Depression in West Virginia and the work of a midwife who has few medical supplies is an extraordinary novel. Had me in tears several times. Really learned to appreciate the craft of midwifery.
Patience Murphy (who was actually Elizabeth Snyder) became a midwife to the women of Appalachia. She was running from her past, and found that she loved helping women bring babies into the world. The book describes stories of the different women, and how Patience forged wonderful friendships with many of the women, including helping one woman …
Follow the story of Patience Murphy as she’s trying to rebuild her life as a midwife in the early 20th century. We don’t think about how hard life in general was at that time for working people, and this book will keep you up at night reading just one more chapter… Enjoy!
Loved it
A woman’s book
Life during the depression for a single woman whose occupation is midwife. How she stayed alive making little or no money delivering babies. Made me very appreciative of all we have today.
Liked it a lot! I am an RN who always wanted to be a midwife, so love stories about midwives!!
Good easy read.
It was a good read.
I loved this book. Gave me a look at what it was to give birth long ago.
It’s not 1.99 on Apple
Read this with our book club. I enjoy historical fiction, and this filled life in the depression, as coal miners, and, of course, a need during childbirth.
I loved the whole series of Midwife books. I have recommended this series to several people and they are equally enthralled. I will read more books by this author.
Enjoyed reading about this subject, informative.
Great read
Fascinating portrayal of the life of a rural midwife.
This author told a beautiful story of folks struggling during hard times.
Loved it & bought 3 more from her. She really covers history well too I am a RN & an historian, so I know much of her material. Great characters. My only complaint is her abrupt endings, Also her book prices are too high.
Written before and during the depression. People in West Virginia struggling to survive, coping with work in coal mines, and without health care or unemployment. No safety regulations. Wonderful characters; one a vet and the other a midwife.
