There is an island off the west coast of Ireland called Inis Murúch — the Island of the Mermaids — a world where myth is more powerful than truth, and love can overcome even death. It is here that Lisa Carey sets her lyrical and sensual first novel, weaving together the voices and lives of three generations of Irish and Irish-American women.
Years ago, the fierce and beautiful Grace stole away … stole away from the island with her small daughter, Gráinne, unable to bear its isolation. Now Gráinne is motherless at fifteen, and a grandmother she has never met has come to take her back. Her heart is pulled between a life in which she no longer belongs and a family she cannot remember. But only on Inis Murúch can she begin to understand the forces that have torn her family apart.

An okay book with nice setting of Ireland
The Mermaids Singing is the story of three generations of women: Cliona who was born in Ireland on Inis Muruch though she left for Boston where she had her daughter Grace before she returned home and married; Grace who considers herself American and bitterly resents her mother for dragging her to the island; and Grainne, Grace’s daughter, who is …
The story of young woman displaced in the wake of her mother’s death, and yet not as she returns to a world and family she does not remember being a part of. not what i was expecting. i thought is was going to be more of actual mermaids, but this is ok thanks
I am so glad to have found this author. Her books are wonderful.
It was an original read, took a little while to get into but worth the read.
Too
A great generational story. The similarities between the generations and the tale itself was well written.
I wanted to like this book that took place in the U.S. and Ireland, but the tortured nature of several of the characters made the journey difficult at times. The teenage angst of the main character often repelled me and was simply over the top.
Not really my cup of tea but I can see where others might enjoy it
I should have stopped after the first chapter.
If you enjoy Irish ledgends this is interesting.
4 generations of women, dealing with life and their personal demons coming to terms with their mothers and grandmothers. A life barely remembered. Discovery that some bonds cannot die. A father comes through and saves his mourning daughter and gains his heart. Ireland running all through the book. This is a beautiful story.
I liked the interweaving of the 3 generations and how the author explained and exposed their toughness and weakness through their raw emotions .
