I can see this novel as a movie! It is well written, action-packed and has great characters. This was my introduction to any work by the two authors and they did a wonderful job, I will definitely be looking for their books in the future.
Tara feels like a failure returning home from the army with dishonourably discharged rather than merit. She has not kept in contact with her family or friends during her time in the army. Tara needs to rebuild these relationships and start her life.
Her father goes missing, but no one is looking for him. Tara and her brother must work together to try to get their father back.
The story is set in Florida and Cuba, we see Tara’s training come into play strong in the story. She is a true alpha woman, but we also see the relationship with her brother improve during this time. She takes the time to listen to him and not consider him the baby.
Can Tara and her brother take on a Cuban drug lord to get their father back alive?
This was a fabulous read. It starts off slower, but it quickly picks up and takes off! I love how it twists and weaves, and it led to a sleepless night because I couldn’t put it down! It has a ton of action, enough to appeal to anyone and the interpersonal drama really adds to the hook. I loved it, thank you for a fabulous read!
Our heroine seems to attract trouble, but it isn’t always her fault. Fortunately, she has the skills and finds a hidden cache of weapons to help her cause. Watch out!
This is an action adventure story. The story is well written and easy to read with an action filled, fast paced plot that grabs your attention early on and won’t let go. I found the characters to be well developed, with solid back stories and realistic reactions to the crazy situations they get into. The plot has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and the action is non-stop. I really enjoyed this story and hope to read more from this author.
Highly recommended
Mercenary’s Daughter Review
Received for review from the author
When I started this book, I really wasn’t sure how it would go. Once Tara and her brother discover the truth about their dad, I was hooked! It was a wild ride, but it was so good. Not quite sure how she and her brother were able to escape so soon and remember their phones and wallets, but nonetheless, a really great story.
I loved that it involved Tara and Mitch finding their dad together. She gave him so many options to stay somewhere safe! It was great to read about them working through things without it distracting from the plot of the book or even slow it down.
This book really does ask questions and answers them in one way or another, even if it’s with that wild cliffhanger at the end!
Overall, this was such a fast-paced and enjoyable read. I met a whole cast of characters and it felt so real and lively. I can’t wait for what’s next!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
** I received a copy of Mercenary’s Daughter from Net Galley and Xpresso Book Tours (Acorn Publishing) in exchange for a voluntary and honest review. My opinions are my own and not solicited in any way**
Mercenary’s Daughter by Jessica Therrien and Joe Gazzam was a fun action packed high adventure read set in Florida and Cuba. Be warned that this has a cliff hanger though so be prepared with that mentioned it’s still worth a high 4 star rating. But I felt like it was reading both a thriller and a YA book nothing wrong with that though it just needed a bit more something to the Tara/Andy story line.
Tara Kafee has come home to her dad when she was given a dishonorable discharge from the Marines Special Ops with resentment to the world. But not everyone is happy to see her especially her little genius little brother Mitch. When their Dad gets a urgent but strange phone call Tara feels like something is off especially with Sasha whose his coworker. When they find out that Harry is missing they discover that his job isn’t appliances but mercenary extraction. So off to Cuba they go in a stolen speed boat after sneaking into Havana they meet Andy who takes them on an adventure of their lives. They use cable cars, zip lines, scuba gear and one beauty of a 1955 Chevy Bel Air as transportation. Will the siblings take on a known gun and drug runner to save their dad? Because theirs one thing Tara knows and that knowledge of her military training may save all their lives including Andy.
Kick-Ass Woman Marine Action Adventure
Oh, this was a fun book to read. It reads like an action-adventure film. The authors are so good at building their word-pictures that the reader feels like they are there in the moment. There were many plot twists and hairy situations. The suspense was fun and not ‘over the top’ While there was lots of violence, the authors describe it in such a way that no one should get bad dreams from any of this book. I am excited to read the next book. I received this ARC book for free from the authors and this is my honest review.
This reads a little like a YA thriller. Given that one coauthor has a strong presence in that market, it’s really no surprise. From the cover, I would have guessed it to have been an adult thriller full of violence and sex. But it wasn’t. It was a fast, fun read, and while it stretched plausibly in a few places, I rolled with it and had a good time. That’s the thing about adventure, IMO it comprises skill, action, luck, fate, circumstance, and romance. If you want cold, hard realism you should probably look up some non-fiction. The storyline deals with a dysfunctional family, sibling rivalries, maturity issues-all YA material. There wasn’t any sex, and even the romance, although obvious, moved at a glacial pace. But the storyline had a great sense of humor, and it moved along rapidly. So I enjoyed it.
PS-Dad was an Extractor and not an Executioner. The Extractor’s Daughter doesn’t have quite the same ring, does it!
What do you do when you discover that everything you thought you knew about your father is a lie? He’s not a boring salesman. He’s a covert agent taking on tasks for money that the U.S. government wants to be able to disavow if they go wrong.
This is the situation that Tara and her brother find herself in when they get news that their father had died while on a business trip. Unfortunately for their father’s government handlers, the news comes before the government can stop them from discovering a secret office in their house with an arsenal of weapons and a mission plan that appears to show that their father snuck into Cuba to extract a criminal by extra-legal means. Tara, an ex-Marine, and her teenaged geeky brother decide to go rescue him.
Frankly, from the moment the two enter Cuba, the novel lost all plausibility for me. It was fun, but nothing seemed even remotely realistic. That being said, the authors carefully set up a cliffhanger ending that was very successful—so much so that I’d like to read the next book to see what happens.
This book kept me turning the pages as danger lurked around every palm tree in this Caribbean thriller where Tara must try to rescue her spy-father from the clutches of a dangerous arms dealer. The action sequences were especially original, so if you enjoy fighting and action, this is a novel for you.
The main character, Tara, was certainly one would describe as a female Rambo. Realistically some of her feats were a little farfetched, however, there was so much action going on which only added more intrigue to the storyline. Kept me turning the pages to find out what predicament would befall the characters while attempting to rescue their father. All in all an enjoyable fast paced action story.
This is the female operative that Lee Child would invent opposite Jack Reacher.
The only negative was the last line left me wanting to read on…..but there is no other book in the series yet. Oh how long will I have to wait???
All you need to know from me: when does the sequel com out?
5 Cranky Stars
This has been the best read of the year so far. Excellent writing very descriptive you can actually see in your own mind exactly what they want you to see.
It starts off with the teenage delinquent daughter in and out of trouble Tara. In the end she joined the Marines, 3 years and doing well moving to special ops until she was dishonorable discharged which wasn’t her fault but she knew nobody would believe her.
She tells the story of how her father disappeared on a ‘work problem’ on their first meal together. Mitch was her younger brother but he could not forgive Tara for never writing in 3 years they had already been deserted by their mother. They had been building an office in the garden when their father’s girlfriend came out and told them some news. Mitch took it bad and started smashing the inner walls of the office only to find lots of wiring and mechanics.
When they had finished tracing it they found a dug out type basement the truth came out about their father. They started on a rescue mission the nerdy boy and the loose-cannon girl. This book drags you in from the first page. There is so much action packed into this book it’s unreal. A recommended read.
