Bestselling novelist Margaret George brings to life the glittering kingdom of Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, in this lush, sweeping, and richly detailed saga. Told in Cleopatra’s own voice, The Memoirs of Cleopatra is a mesmerizing tale of ambition, passion, and betrayal in the ancient Egyptian world, which begins when the twenty-year-old queen seeks out the most powerful man in the world, Julius … man in the world, Julius Caesar, and does not end until, having survived the assassination of Caesar and the defeat of the second man she loves, Marc Antony, she plots her own death rather than be paraded in triumph through the streets of Rome.
Most of all, in its richness and authenticity, it is an irresistible story that reveals why Margaret George’s work has been widely acclaimed as “the best kind of historical novel, one the reader can’t wait to get lost in.” (San Francisco Chronicle).

What exceptional writing! Margaret George’s descriptions of Egypt, Rome, and Antioch were so meticulous and rich, I forgot where I was. Be prepared, the book is very long because she misses nothing. By the time you are done, you have witnessed Cleopatra’s life through her eyes and have a deeper understanding of this fascinating woman. A great biographical novel.
Margaret George is the master of epic historical fiction and capturing the lives of history’s most intriguing figures. While all of her books are simply amazing, The Memoirs of Cleopatra really shines in her impressive body of work.
The novel is richly detailed and the characters and world come to life for the reader. From the first page, you immediately feel immersed in the cultures of Egypt and Rome. One of George’s greatest skills is her ability to weave historical fact and detail with an engaging, page-turning narrative. This is a LONG book, but the reader never feels as though it is unwieldy; rather, the length is a pleasure, thoroughly immersing you in a captivating world and period in history.
The romances between Cleopatra and Caesar, and Cleopatra and Marc Antony are both so well-done and the political intrigue is fascinating. The greatest achievement in this novel, however, is the stunning portrayal of Cleopatra. This is definitely a must-read for historical fiction lovers and if you’re unfamiliar with the genre, there isn’t a better place to start.
Perfect historical fiction.
Cleopatra a monumental and epic novel!
Margaret George does it again!!
I enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to anyone as obsessed as I am with old world history.
Very well researched with an informative and very interesting take on Cleopatra.
I absolutely loved The Memoirs of Cleopatra! It is a great read and so very interesting. The descriptions and historical significance are unparalleled. The characters come to life and stay with you for a long time. You feel as though
you are living in that ancient civilization with Anthony and Cleopatra. The Memoirs
of Cleopatra is one of my all time favorite books!
What I have read it really let you in on her way of thinking
good reading
Even though you think you know all about Cleopatra, you don’t. At the very last page I was mesmerized by Margaret George’s enveloping the reader in the story and wished for it to go on and on.
I highly recommend this book! It is so well written it makes the reader feel like they are there with the characters. I didn’t want it to end!!
I learned so much about Cleopatra that I never knew before, I read this years ago and it still resonates.
The Memoirs of Cleopatra was an excellent book. It was interesting to read a book from “Cleopatra’s point of view. “ The author included many historical facts. Besides the great love stories – I was also interested in finding out why Marc Anthony lost the battle with Octavian .
Quite an interesting read. Enjoyed it.
Love her books
the best book I have ever read
I felt I was there. Margaret George has a wonderful way of putting you right in the scene with Cleopatra and her family, advisers, lovers and opponents. I could feel the heat and humidity, touch the marble, see her clothing and jewels, understand her joys and sorrows. I am not a scholar of the last of the Egyptian dynasties, but I knew the story of her heartbreaks, one after another, when her life seemed so gloriously promising in her youth. This time, I was a close observer and I hated for the book to end and leave me stranded and alone at home.
It is really good until Cleopatra and Marc Antony get together. After that, it drags.
I have always been interested in the life of Cleopatra and what Egyptian society was like during her reign. Amazingly, their culture was very sophisticated with many modern day conveniences. I wish the author could have described their architecture, pyramids and burial rites in more depth. The book had over 900 pages and too many characters to keep track of while reading the book.
