Bestselling novelist Margaret George brings to life the glittering kingdom of Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, in this lush, sweeping, and richly detailed saga. Told in Cleopatra’s own voice, The Memoirs of Cleopatra is a mesmerizing tale of ambition, passion, and betrayal in the ancient Egyptian world, which begins when the twenty-year-old queen seeks out the most powerful man in the world, Julius … man in the world, Julius Caesar, and does not end until, having survived the assassination of Caesar and the defeat of the second man she loves, Marc Antony, she plots her own death rather than be paraded in triumph through the streets of Rome.
Most of all, in its richness and authenticity, it is an irresistible story that reveals why Margaret George’s work has been widely acclaimed as “the best kind of historical novel, one the reader can’t wait to get lost in.” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Beautifully written. Though the book is long, but you simply cannot stop reading .
The first book I ever read by Margaret George was The Autobiography of Henry VIII which was absolutely magnificent! Every other one I tried, paled in comparison which included this one about Cleopatra as well as the one about Antony and Cleopatra. If you’ve not read The Autobiography of Henry VIII, find it immediately!
Even though this book was over 900 pages. I loved it. The writer made Cleopatra more human to me. Not just some Queen or Goddess. But a women who ruled over many. If you like enjoy historical fiction. I like to believe that this came close the real thing.
This book covers a woman that is intriguing; yet dangerous at the same time. Quite a combination to read about. Interesting.
I felt this could of been shorter and still had the same impact. I admire the Cleopatra who is portrayed in the book. You can peak into what her life must have been like. For being such a strong woman she really put up with a lot from both Caesar and Marc Antony since she wasn’t a Roman citizen.
wow, 1300 pages, but each on was a page turner, loved it!
I found it silly and child like in its approach to Ancient Egyptian history. Mostly a romantic novel….very disappointing.
I’m wading my way through it with 17 hours left to go….I seldom fail to finish a book but this one is just boringly written. It slogs on and on and on. I love historical fiction but not this book.
This book portrays Cleopatra with respect and tells the story from her viewpoint. She comes accross as a clear-thinking, capable woman whose goal was always the best interests of Egypt. It certainly makes more sense to see her this way, rather than the unscrupulous ,sensuous seducer, looking to betray powerful Romans. I liked it.
We’re heading to Egypt in May. The story of Cleopatra is captivating, with just enough history included.
I did not care for this book. It was too long and the story line did not hold my
interest. The author made Mark Anthony’s character very weak not someone to match Cleopatra.
Great historical fiction about Cleopatra
The one thing I have against this book is that it is long and gets bogged down in details.
‘The Memoirs of Cleopatra’ is one of my most favorite books of all time! I’ve read all of Margaret George’s books; every one a page-turner that is hard to put down! She is an amazing writer with impeccable research into all of her subjects.
A sweeping historical fiction read.
It was very interesting from her point of view.
I’ve read this book 7 times I love it so much!
I read about 700 pages of this massive novel and although it was well-written, entertaining and interesting — I couldn’t bear to finish the novel because I knew where it would lead. The tragic ending loomed at the end of the book and I finally couldn’t go any farther even though it was an excellent novel.
Excellent historical fiction!
