Her heart seeks sanctuary in the deep woods. But will trouble find her even here?
The Civil War has ended, but in Katie Calloway’s Georgia home, conflict still rages. To protect herself and her young brother from her violent and unstable husband, she flees north, finding anonymity and sanctuary as the cook in a north woods lumber camp. The camp owner, Robert Foster, wonders if the lovely woman … lovely woman he’s hired has the grit to survive the never-ending work and harsh conditions of a remote pine forest in winter. Katie wonders if she can keep her past a secret from a man she is slowly growing to love.
With grace and skill, Serena Miller brings to life a bygone era. From the ethereal, snowy forest and the rowdy shanty boys to the warm cookstove and mouth-watering apple pie, every detail is perfectly rendered, transporting you to a time of danger and romance.

Very interesting read. It had a little bit of everything.
I loved the characters.
This is the first book I’ve read from this author but it will not be my last. Loved the story, the characters, couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend. Wonderfully written.
Katie Calloway is a very spunky character, who has been abused by a husband deranged from the Civil War. I loved this book! A bit unpredictable and very entertaining! There were some suspenseful moments and funny ones!
Definitely worth the time to read!
I loved this book. It just makes your heart happy. It’s been a while since I’ve read it. I just remember how much I loved it. Tomorrow I’ll start reading it again
Absolutely loved this book. Good romance with no sex. Realistic without being graphic or vulgar. A good book can be written without it
Great book
Such a wonderful story with well built characters. I loved the detail in the story and how well described each scene was… I felt I was there. THis book inspired me to do a little research on Michigan and the big trees mentioned in the story. I love that it is a clean story… a strong story with a promise of more to come.
I am totally surprised by how much I liked this book. I’m a sucker for historical romance and love reading about people struggling in the wild frontiers trying to eek out a living. Add onto that a story with a heroine running from an abusive husband, and I’m hooked. But more than that, the story worked well. I have no idea if the portrayal of …
I love history especially anything to do with the Civil War. This book is set at the end of the war with a Northern woman who had married a Southern man who was very abusive to her. She slipped away when he was gone on a trip and ended up in a logging camp in Michigan as their cook. The Author put interesting facts about how these logging camps …
There are so many things to love about this beautiful novel. An original story line. Characters that not only exhibit strength, and tenacity, but their faults and flaws that make them seem so incredibly real. It’s a wonderful well-written book that with linger in your heart as well as your thoughts.
Keep a few on my bookshelf- that I’d read again. This is one. Put me right into early logging camp life.
I couldn’t hardly put it down!
Loved it!
