I really enjoyed this book, didn’t think I would but it is good
Love this period piece. Great characters. Shows the hardships our ancestors endured venturing to a new world.
A bit too slow for my taste
This is a readable and nicely paced fictional love story set on the “Mayflower” for its historic voyage to Plymouth Rock. The romantic tale is enjoyable and decently paced, and thankfully, there’s a minimum of “Oh, his blue eyes!” “Oh, when he put his hand on my shoulder! Oh! Oh!” Okay, there’s some of that, but it’s bearable.
The Christian element in this story is very prevalent, which readers need to know going in. Plenty of prayer and Scriptural references and “God’s will be done.”
In a mostly positive read, I noted just two false notes. The little boy, David, is precocious beyond belief: the kid is eight going on fifteen. Some of what comes out of his mouth is just way too grownup.
The second clunker is right toward the end. William and Mary are clearly headed toward the altar, and then he abruptly and unconvincingly breaks things off over an obviously temporary legal mess. It’s plain to the reader that a reconciliation and wedding bells are just a few pages away, and somehow the scene just does not work. Sorry.
Having said that, this writer has created a convincing world aboard the ship, and the tug of wills between the Separatists and secular passengers (and profane crew members) is interesting. Overall, Ms. Woodhouse’s book is a well-crafted adventure.
I learned so much about the Mayflower and passengers and all they went through. It was a lot different then we learned in school. Really an eye opener.
This is not a lightweight romance novel. The story about the long voyage to America was well- detailed and often tragic. Over time, a romance blossoms, despite the extreme hardship of forging a new colony. This, in itself, is an overwhelming task. Very well written.
So enjoyed this historical book. It’s so amazing the people’s courage and tenacity in dealing with such difficult circumstances.
I didn’t finish this book, I thought it was boring.
This book was a great look into history with a beautiful tale of romance woven into it
E njoyed very easy read
Story of our history.
I loved it, and it mentioned direct ancestors of mine who came to America on the Mayflower. It is very well researched.
Loved learning about the history and culture of that time period.
This was a tough book to read. All the hardships and tragic times on the ship and then the totally undeveloped area they came to where they landed on the wrong area with none of their landgrants available to use.
Enjoyable take on American history.
Difficult to get into the story because it was so packed with history.
Good read
It taught me that our forefathers who came on the Mayflower went through a lot to come here to worship God. A lot of them left every thing behind to come to the new world. Most of them had died before they got here. Those that lived did not turn their backs are get mad at God. They held fast God and they loved and worshiped Him through it all. So glad to have read it.
Informative
I just happen to like ‘historical fiction’ – fiction based on actual history. This book was realistically based on history, had believable characters and a wonderful romance thrown in.
Exciting and I could hardly put it down. If you like history, you will love this book!
