The heartbreak of their childhood drove the Morgan brothers far from their family’s California ranch—and one another. But as they face the wounds of the past, each feels the land calling him home . . . Blue Morgan never thought he’d crave long days on horseback, working the cattle ranch where he grew up. But after a decade of getting shouted and shot at in the Marines, fresh air and hard … fresh air and hard work are just what he needs to settle his restless energy. Except no matter how hard he tries to focus, his mind wanders to the pretty, prickly new veterinarian instead.
There’s no denying the spark between Jenna McDonald and Blue. But with her job at risk and her own family’s expectations to wrangle, Jenna isn’t looking for another sparring partner. Blue needs her expertise on horses. And if she can help solve his mother’s disappearance, she’s willing to pitch in. But she’ll leave his ideas about how love should be scheduled to him. Jenna is tired of being told what she can’t have—and ready to reach for what she wants . . .

A Navy Seal, Blue, comes home to the family ranch and meets local vet. His father returns, sober, after many years, and he and his brother try to bring the family back together and locate their missing mother and younger sister. Blue also finds out he has a ten year old daughter from a one night hook up ten years before. Through all this Blue and the vet, Jenna, find time to fall in love and have lots of sexy hook ups. Another great read in the Morgan family story.

I purchased a copy of the novel The maverick Cowboy: Morgan Ranch book 2 by Kate Pearce and this review is given freely.
Interesting, actioned packed and at times funny, book 2 in the Morgan family saga contains more than the steamy story of Marine Blue aka BB Morgan with the vet Jenna and the search for answers regarding his mother and sister’s disappearance. This is well written and at times emotional novel filled with topics such as recovering from addiction, forgiveness, self worth after adoption and the prejudice against women vets. Balancing out the more serious topics are Jenna and her gossipy fun loving friends, the introduction to brother number three Ry, the preparation for Chase and January’s wedding, and realistic family moments.
Wow, did I fall in love with Blue, swoon!
This is #2 in Kate’s Morgantown Ranch series and I just love these guys. We start out as Blue is dis-entangling himself from the Marines. It’s not simple and he gets hurt on his last training mission. He goes home to the ranch to heal and settle himself into civilian life. He again meets Jenna McDonald, one of the veterinarians in the McDonald family. She’s a cousin filling in while her cousin is finishing up her vet degree and comes back to the family practice. I love the sense of family in these stories, the love, belonging and support for each other. Jenna’s problem is she’s got baggage from being adopted. She was 12 when she was adopted into an over-achiever family and feels never good enough and afraid of being rejected once again. Blue’s baggage is his black and white thinking and the pain from his mother and sisters disappearance combined with his dad’s alcoholism. Kate weaves the story so each has to face and grow through their hurts and want to be a committed partner in this growing relationship. I love how Blue lets Jenna make her choices and doesn’t pressure her into them. He encourages, he tells her where he stands and lets her choose growth and love.
As a fun FYI, Kate has a gift for dialogue. The 3 best friends are so great together: Jenna, Yvonne and January. Their get togethers are fabulous and funny on occasion.
This is the second book in the Morgan Ranch series. I would not recommend reading it as a stand alone. Both Chase and Blue have reconciled with their past and their father and are moving forward. (I love that the four boys were named after some of the characters in the old tv westerns that I used to watch with my grandfather.) Chase is engaged to January and Blue is soon to be released from the Marines. As he starts working on the range he realizes a mutual attraction to Jenna McDonald, the veterinarian that has been helping them with their stock. Jenna has her own issues, dealing with feelings of not being good enough, the result of having been adopted after her parents didn’t want her and the super expectations of her successful adopted siblings and parents. The Morgans have information that their mother and sister might still be alive and then they get another surprise.
