Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American ReadSix days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that … alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.
Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.
But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

The science was good but other than that I thought the writing was awful.
I am not sure I would know how to survive on my own for years on a desert planet with radical weather and caustic winds. Even with technical help it is not certain that it is possible.
A very fun read. I couldn’t put it down.
One of my favorites.
I’m a sci-fi enthusiast and this one dotted and the I’s and crossed all the T’s. Creative, informative, believable – at least to the extent sci-fi can be. The author really did his homework. Also, a great study of how people work together to solve a common problem.
Great Read!!!!
Unique. Super read.
Sci-fi , solitaire . Yesssss
This book is about a group of 6 astronauts that are sent on a mission to Mars. A dust storm throws one astronaut off, away from the others. They hunt for him, but can’t find him. The dust storm is so bad that the mission is aborted, and they have to leave the astronaut – our main character, Mark Watney – behind.
What happens next is that the …
I loved this book! It was such a great story about survival against the odds. Terrible things challenged the astronaut and still he went on trying to survive in Mars!
This book kept me entertained and engaged while painting a house. Between the action and the science, I could not stop listening to it. A fantastic sci-fi that keeps you engaged, and makes you wonder about the science behind it all.
Loved it! Well researched and credible.
I loved this book, read this before you see the movie. But do see the movie. Both are fabulous and funny! Fyi, there is swearing.
The best thing about “The Martian” is the fascinating, humorous, indomitable voice of the main character, Mark Watney, I really prefer him to Robinson Crusoe! The way that author Andy Weir writes him makes all the survival strategies, physics, botany, math, plus other sciences, and situations easy to comprehend. I learned a lot and at the same …
The book wasn’t completely for me, but I would still recommend it. A lot of specific science/space references. Kind of made me glaze over a few times, but I did enjoy Watney.
Loved this! Wonderful creation of the character – intelligent with a great sense of humor!!
A very entertaining read filled with science. Great explanations by the author. You are always rooting for Mark Watney!
There is a lot of science-talk in this book, which I loved! The story is great and the characters brave.
Read this book after it was recommended by a friend. Once I got through the beginning, it was a bit dry for me, it became an absolute page turner!
Loved this book!
