Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American ReadSix days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that … alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.
Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.
But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

I have reread this book and re-watched the movie that came from it more times that I have any other.
Better than the movie and the movie was pretty darn good
I could barely put this book down. As an engineer, I found it fascinating. I can’t wait to read the author’s next book.
What can be said that hasn’t already been said a thousand times! The book is very original and engrossing. The science is good. It is an adventure the likes of which you don’t often see. Bonus points for the movie following the book perfectly!
Great!
Engrossing, hard-sf approach to the possible realities of space flight to Mars. Great, fast-paced adventure that will be hard for you to put down.
Good book better flick (9)
One of the best pieces of science fiction written in the last 30 years.
Book is 100 times better than movie.
If the first line does not hook you, then this is not the book for you.
I’m sure I’m just jumping on the bandwagon. Is there anything wrong with this book? That was a rhetorical question, the answer being a resounding NO.
Good realistic science based science fiction — a good read.
Have reread it twice!
This is hard science fiction at its best.
Well written and very science driven.
Smart and amazingly hard-science SF, but vastly entertaining because of the character and narrative thrust. This is classic problem-solving SF, but with an engaging lead.
What an interseting read!! Man survives on Mars alone…not something I would want to try. Great movie too!
Very realistic
Sci-fi at it’s best! Survival story with a satisfying outcome.
So much better than the movie
