Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American ReadSix days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that … alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.
Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.
But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

I just loved it.
Well written, captures the imagination. A really fun book at the beach, or anywhere else, for that matter.
I wasn’t sure I would like this book, it was for a book club. The first 50 pages, I thought, oh my gosh, but they lay the foundation for the book and in the end, I really like it.
This is a book for nerds and geeks. The situation is just realistic enough to pose a challenging, unfolding problem that drives the protagonist almost to distraction.
Just do it!
Original and exciting story, I just knocked off a star because there were just times when the scientific concepts and Jargon were over my head (and probably over most people’s heads that aren’t rocket scientists like the astronaut in the story), so I did skim those sections a bit (I heard they were actually very scientifically accurate), but the …
Great Book! Even better than the movie!!!
Great story! Very exciting!
As someone said, if in the movie Apollo 13, the bits where they were mcgyvering fixes to save their lives were the bits you said ‘I want MORE’. If that’s the case you’ll love, LOVE this book.
It’s amazing.
What a fabulous book! It was recommended to me and I, in turn, passed this review on to just about anybody who would listen. Made a wonderful movie too!
an excellent book and very accurate techically
One of my new favorite books! I absolutely love the witty humor in the face of danger.
Save it for a weekend, because you will not put it down.
Tremendous story of the skill to survive on a planet far from home while remaining positive
This is a good book.
I saw the movie last year or so (along with Gravity Sandra Bullock, Interstellar Matthew Macconaughey, and Passengers Jennifer Lawrence) and really loved it. I wasn’t expecting much from the book since I had sort of spoiled it by seeing the movie, but a friend of mine (Nyero Gibs Dick Somni~451) assured me the book was even …
Very good read lots of interesting facts in the story of Mars and an astronaut.
There was a lot of tech jargon, but the premise of the story was really good
Masterpiece
This was the most plausible version of the “lost on Mars” trope I have read. The science made sense to me, though I am certainly not an engineer or chemist. All the characters forwarded the story.
I enjoy sci-fi, and this was one of the best I have read recently
One of the best science fiction books I’ve read, but grounded in reality. No BEMs (Bug-eyed Monsters) or Hyperdrives…
