It started as as a simple search for a landscape designer…I wanted a beautiful backyard for my new home and my neighbors suggested I look into Ward Landscaping & Design. The owner had no pictures of himself on his website, just a portfolio of nice outdoor sitting areas, pools, and vibrant gardens that I’d always dreamed of having.Of course I hired him.I expected to meet an average guy, but … expected to meet an average guy, but Mr. Marcel Ward is far from your average man. He’s handsome, and well-built, and his smile–though a rare feat–is truly infectious.
He’s every woman’s dream–a handsome, older man who doesn’t mind getting down and dirty to create something beautiful all because of his passion for it. Unfortunately that lucky woman can’t be me.
Although Mr. Ward tests my limits, quickens my breath, and makes my heart skip a beat when he’s around, I’ve made a promise to devote myself to my husband.
So why am I falling for a man I know I can’t have?

Intrigue, underlying facets, are all cleverly written into this story that’s like an onion you have to peel back the layers to get to the core. Most of all the last chapter will have you reeled in begging for answers. Cliffhangers I hate them, but after hearing Lacy read this last chapter I need more.
Lacy Laurel and Aiden Snow kudos on the narration.

You know those books that blur the lines of right and wrong? Those books that make you uncomfortable because of the subject matter? This is THAT kind of book. But let me tell you, once you get to the ending (rather, that cliffhanger) everything makes PERFECT sense. There are times when being wrong is actually VERY right and I think Shanora Williams proves that in this heartfelt, emotional, and heartbreaking novel. This book SLAYED me. It made me rethink everything I once believed on the subject and I wanted to personally jump into the novel and and give Gabby a hug. WOW. To think that a book I was concerned about in the beginning would make my heart bleed like this is stunning. I am so glad I decided to try out a new author and I am thrilled to have found THIS particular book. The Man I Can’t Have will open your eyes, your heart, and make you understand that sometimes, it’s okay to do the things that make you feel happy (even if the consequences are severe).
Please note, this book does revolve a controversial subject in the romance world (view spoiler). But if you give a try and read it with an open mind and an open heart you will realize that things aren’t always as they appear. This topic isn’t one that many want to read about but again, Gabby’s story is a delicate one. Nothing is revealed until the BRUTAL end and if you can see through the hard parts you will UNDERSTAND. I HIGHLY recommend this book. It’s one of my favorites of the year and I absolutely NEED the second one (like NOW). Sigh…
I won’t get into the plot of this book you are better off going into the story blind. But I will repeat that readers should have an open mind when going into it. Give a book that makes you slightly uncomfortable a real chance because when you get to the end you see WHY and HOW it could have happened in the first place.
This is the FIRST book I have read by Shanora Williams but you can bet I am going back and devouring her blacklist of books in anticipation of this one. Her writing style and the way she tells the story is impeccable.
Wow… Is it hot in here? Damn… Hold up.. Wait, how had I not known of this author? I mean I had seen her around but why had I waited this long to read a book by her?? HOLY F**K. This book was intense, it was forbidden, it was hot, it was emotional, it was addictive and it swallowed me whole!
So this is my first book by Ms. Williams and it will not be my last. Shanora Williams has just gone and blown my mind. Her words and the way she delivered this book was perfection, I found it so easy to read, and it flowed so well… So add in a killer plot… You will get a masterpiece just like this book!
In The Man I Can’t Have, we meet Gabby aka Gabrielle, who has recently gotten married to a man called Kyle, she thought was meant to be the one, but instead of feeling in love with the man she married, she is regretting marrying him, realizing she shouldn’t have said yes and made the hasty decision. She was proposed to on New Year’s Eve at the Empire State Building, while people watched, and to be in that situation? She stood in silence, she thought the only answer she could say was yes. But now married to the man, she is a lost, lonely and feels as though something is missing. Kyle went about the proposal in the wrong way. It wasn’t a gesture of love saying it in front of all those people. In my opinion, no one should propose that way. It’s an intimate thing and one that should be shared between two people, not putting someone on the spot. BUT that is just MY opinion.
Gabby hires a man to help her with the landscaping of her new home, a man by the name of Marcel Ward. She had no idea that the moment she met this man that her life was about to change, that everything she was longing for, searching for, that she was missing, was him…The ignite that she craved… It was him. Everything about him was calling out to her.
Marcel is a man that has gone through more than the average person in his life, he has pent up guilt and remorse and he struggles with it, but it doesn’t own him. He’s an amazing man, a man with a heart of gold and you can’t help but fall in love with as the book progresses. He was a fantasy that came true for Gabby.
So these two together, they knew from the moment they met that there was something between them, you could cut the sexual tension with a knife, but it wasn’t just that, everything about them called out to each other and they couldn’t help but fall hard and passionately for each other. It was impossible for them not to. Which starts off an intense and all-consuming relationship that I absolutely devoured and could not get enough of. These two together were HOT and forbidden and captivating and I was completely addicted to them both as the story progressed and their lustful desires deepened.
This book was not what I was expecting, and I am so glad it wasn’t… Because it was more than I expected. I love forbidden, it’s one of my favorite tropes and this book is one of the many reasons why. It was truly everything and more than I anticipated and I cannot for the next book!!
5 incredible stars!
**ARC REVIEW**
WOW!! I have to bow to Mrs. Shanora Williams, she surprised me.. Had me questioning everything!
Gabby is a young beautiful talented artist. She finds herself meeting Kyle her husband while in college working at a diner. She finds him as an OK guy who is extremely successful and a safe choice. After marrying Kyle, he decides for them to move far from her family and as newlyweds in a brand new home and brand new state. Kyle is constantly traveling for work and gabby finds herself alone and missing her family.
Gabby meets Marcel the landscaper designer who is set to re-do her backyard. She feels an instant gravitation towards him, a connection and familiarity she’s never had before. She feels safe with him.
After years of hiding his guilt, Marcel is finally successful and trying his best to keep himself busy. He meets Gabby and his whole world turns upside down. She’s the one for him, there’s just one catch! She’s married. She’s married to an asshole who doesn’t deserve or respect her. He needs to find a way to convince Gabby to choose him, choose real love. Choose what her heart is yearning.
Yes this book has cheating BUT! There’s a big BUT here… It’s not want you think! So many questions will travel in back of your mind.. The suspense will eat at you… The cliffhanger OMG!!!

The Man I Can’t Have (Ward Duet)
By: Shanora Williams
Narrated by: Lacy Laurel, Aiden Snow
Series: Ward Duet, Book 1
This is my first Shanora Williams book and it will not be my last. I enjoyed her writing style and the story she created, it captivated me from start to end. Her storylines are interesting filled with drama and angst, I felt like I was taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride. This is a slow burn romance a forbidden one but sometimes things are just meant to happen. The characters in this story are complex and well developed. I loved Marcel, Mr. Ward, he is smoking hot with a no nonsense attitude. He did not have such an easy life and the losses & guilt he suffers from did a number on him emotionally. And with his personal life being an empty mess it is nice to see he has a successful business. I really liked Gabby, she had a great personality but I felt like she was not being entirely truthful about her husband and their relationship and I am not talking about a lack of spark or that she felt something was missing. I sensed there was more to it and I was devastated to learn what it was in the climatic ending. I wonder what else is going on with Kyle, hints were dropped but I am sure more will surface in the next book “The Man I Need”, aka the book I need now, fingers crossed it comes out on Audible soon. Shanora Williams, thank you for this great story, I am looking forward to the next one.
I listened to the Audible edition, Lacy Laurel and Aiden Snow are wonderful narrators and voice performers. They bring the characters to life, give each their own voice and personality. They do a great job projecting the emotions of the characters in their performance. I loved Lacy’s Gabby and Aiden’s Marcel, sultry and swoon worthy, so fitting and perfect. Both are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another great listen

Wow. Honestly, I don’t even know where to start this review. I’ve never had the pleasure of reading Shanora Williams before and The Man I Can’t Have just showed me that I have been HUGELY missing out! This story rocked my world for sure. It’s deliciously angsty, super sexy and completely captivating.
What I learned from reading Shanora’s work was simple—this woman pens stories that are simply incredible. I am utterly captivated with the characters in this book—Marcel Ward is a broken man who only starts to come back to life with Gabby. Only Gabby isn’t his and shouldn’t be. She’s a married woman, even if her man is an utter asshole. The forbidden romance is one of my favorite tropes, only I usually steer clear of ones where they are cheating with one another. These usually remain a hard limit for me as a result of a disastrous upbringing. But with that said, I have wanted to read Shanora’s work for some time, and this book was my first chance. So, I took the plunge and I am beyond glad I did. I loved that the chemistry between Gabby and Marcel was so intense it was damn near tangible. It made the slow burn between them even sexier, and yes, it’s a slow, sexy burn before these two fell into one another. From the very first page, I had assumptions about Kyle and while I am still expecting those to bear fruit, Shanora was brilliant in the way she slowly and methodically led us astray from what was really happening between Gabby and Kyle. But I will say no more on the subject.
Let me address the elephant in the room, yes The Man I Can’t Have ends with a cliffy. I mean, it’s a duet, it’s supposed to. And this Cliffhanger? Jesus! This cliffhanger left me close to chucking my kindle across the room. If you follow my reviews, you know I hate cliffhangers. But this one left me over the top with emotional distress that I can’t even begin to articulate. I NEED the second book, The Man I Want like I need oxygen and I can’t breathe until it hits my kindle. That’s how much I loved this book, despite the cliffhanger…
As a blogger, I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of The Man I Can’t Have, and while my review is late, that is ultimately on me, not the author. In fact, I wanted to get this review up a week ago, but sick kids and a house flood prevented it. Now, I want to eliminate any doubt about the quality of the Shanora’s writing and storytelling abilities as well as state that it’s one of the best books I’ve read this year. The story Shanora penned is not only beautiful, its crafted to maximize the emotions of the readers and keep them completely and utterly spellbound. The pacing and flow were perfect, in my opinion and I can’t think of a single change I would suggest. I love how painstakingly the characters relationship was developed and how the story was laid out. Neither character was looking for a reason to cheat together, in fact they fought it desperately. It had a very realistic quality to the story and overall, I found it unproducible. Yes, we know its general trope—the forbidden relationship between Marcel and Gabby—but beyond that, nothing actually pans out the way I expected it too. This Ward Duet is an absolute must read and I would give it six stars on a one to five scale.
Quotes:
…in spite of all the good in my life, I yearn for something that will make me burn, in a good way. I have no idea what it is… but there has to be something out there like it.
I still couldn’t get over the man I’d just met— the chiseled, Southern god who sat at my table wearing dusty jeans and a solid white T-shirt as if he were just some average Joe.
She’s my client …but she’s making it damn hard not to look.
I can tell she and I are complete opposites. I’m not the one to reveal how I feel. I repress my emotions, yet she lays it all on the table and doesn’t care how awkward it might make one feel.
Gabby is complicated as fuck, blurring the lines between business and being personable, and I don’t like it. The best thing I can do is keep my distance before I end up in the same position I was in eight years ago: jobless because of a rumor about me and a rich man’s wife.
I’m like a virus— a deadly one. Everyone around me always seems to either disappear or die, and I’d hate for any of those things to happen to Gabby.
Every single one of these kisses are stolen, because I don’t belong to him. I belong to someone else— a man who would lose his mind if he ever found out.
She had it wrong when she said I would be her ruin. If anything, I’m almost certain she will become mine.
“I don’t just want right now. I want you forever… I know how I make you feel. I know you’d never feel it with him, no matter how hard you tried to make it happen. I’ve already ruined you for him.”
While it seems the pretense is pretty much set by the title, this book is so much more than a simple forbidden romance. Shanora Williams has cleverly created these two beautiful, raw, imperfect characters that seem to need so much from one another but life’s circumstances simply stand in their way. The anxiety and underlying intrepidation that lingers throughout the plot is marvelously brought to fruition. The constant struggle with right and wrong plays on the reader’s emotional engagement. It’s a beautiful contradiction and an overall great read.
I am blown away. I had no idea where this book was going with the tragic opening but the end had me gasping. I need to listen again.
Shanora Williams takes your emotions on a white knuckle inducing wild ride. It’s so easy to lose yourself in this story, once I started I could not stop listening. Was I awake until 3am, yes. Am I over that ending, absolutely not.
The writing is scorching hot. Like melt your tablet sexy. While sitting down and writing this review I am just now coming to terms with how masterful the foreshadowing is.
Gabby is the main character you go through the majority of the book from her perspective. She is a gorgeous artist whose just graduated college, been married and moved to a new state. Her Husband Kyle an older successful investment banker whose job pulls him all over the country. Then there is Marcellus the southern charmer who is hired to transform Gabby and Kyle’s backyard. His is the other POV in the story.
This was my first experience with Shanora Williams’s writing and I can already tell she is someone I will be reading the rest of my life. I’m so excited to find more of her work. The narrators were fantastic. I did have one minor issue with the way one of them pronounced the word architect but that did not diminish the overall experience for me.
I am anxiously waiting for the second part of this duet.
I would recommend this for fans of great writing, age gap (not taboo) romance, steamy romance and people that like to visceral reactions to books (girl I’m telling you that ending. I’m done for)
There is some subject matter some readers my find triggering (infidelity)

5 intense emotional stars!!
Whew what a read!! This book was a mess of emotions from start to finish; I seriously did not how to feel about it from page to the next. However, I can not explain how much I enjoyed it, and I am absolutely dying waiting for the next book. My heart was pumping and I had a ton of anxiety waiting to see what would happen next.
I liked Gabby right away and felt for her in regards to the marriage she is in…that being said, there were times I questions her thinking but overall I really loved her.
Kyle on the other had, I really did not like him from the get go, and unfortunately he never did anything to make me change my mind.
Marcel though…good lord this man did it for me. There was nothing I didn’t like about him and even though he was the forbidden fruit, I would eat it!
This book is a must read and I suggest you do it now so you can get ready for the next book!
Gabby Moore’s life has been one constant change ever since getting married. Now in a brand new house far from where she grew up and her husband always away on business, there is plenty of time for thoughts to trickle in about how she’s lonely and if this move was actually worth it. One thing for Gabby to focus on is their backyard and wanting it updated before having a housewarming party. She was more than prepared for plenty of guys being around for weeks doing their jobs, but what she didn’t expect was Marcel Ward, who is the owner of the landscaping company but seems to constantly be around to get his hands dirty. Lingering stares turn to many conversations and although both Gabby and Marcel try to stay professional, that seems to go out the window the more time passes with the backyard job being completed as quickly as possible.
I love a good forbidden romance and I’m really loving how Shanora Williams takes to this genre. She starts with something taboo, with Gabby being married and seeing Marcel as more than just a landscape designer, and delivers a super exciting, steamy, and romantic read yet again. I actually did try to savor this story which was quite silly since I didn’t want to stop reading once I dove in. First I have to say how much I absolutely loved Marcel, he was definitely my favorite character. His personal story was both heartbreaking and inspiring and I wanted to constantly hug him and jump him at the same time. Gabby on the other hand was a character I had mixed feelings about. I did appreciate that she took her new marriage seriously and never wanted to add stress to her husband, Kyle’s, life but sometimes her age would show, especially when she complained of boredom and loneliness. I truly love how much I didn’t expect from The Man I Can’t Have, this story went extremely deep and that ending was such a jaw dropper and not something I saw coming at all. Another amazing read from Shanora Williams I am already so eager to get back to these characters with the second half of this duet.
Shanora Williams does it again!
Such an emotional, angsty and pure feels read!
Gabby is married and looking for a landscape designer and Mr. Ward comes highly recommended. You’ll fast learn why!
Incredibly talented, handsome, charming and mysterious, Gabby soon learns she’s in over her head trying to resist him.
Will these two get a happily ever after? I guess we’ll find out in The Man I Need.
If you’ve read Shanora before, you should have an idea as to what to expect. A book full of romance, pain, passion, angst, feels and frustration are on the cards when (Not IF) you read The Man I Can’t Have! I’m absolutely aching for part 2!!!

Reading this story is like being on a train collision course. You know there will be a collision and you know there will a lot of hurt. I read the book in a state of fascination, watching how the author presents an adultery trope and makes it understandable, although heartbreaking.
Gabby and her husband Kyle have recently moved to a spectacular house, right next to the beach, in Hilton Head Island. She used to complain from the cold and dreary weather in New York, where they lived before, and this was her husband’s solution. The problem was that Kyle travels constantly for work, and now Gabby misses her family (parents and brother Ricky, and her best friend Teagan). She feels quite lonely, strangely dissatisfied with her life, and like something is lacking that doesn’t let her feel happy and content.
Enter Marcel Durant, landscape engineer, contracted by Gabby to fix the patio of the house into a lovely garden where Gabby can drink her morning coffee and enjoy the view of the beach. Marcel is a lovely specimen of a man who enjoys the outdoors, very fit, very handsome, and very kind. They’re immediately attracted to each other, and can’t help doing some flirting.
“He is so perfect—everything I’ve always wanted in a man. Too bad he can never be mine.”
Gabby is in a conflict; she feels attracted to Marcel, she feels lonely, and her husband is acting like a jerk. Moreover, everyone is telling her that her husband is a jerk, treats her like dirt, and she deserves much better. There’s this yearning for the attention of a man who will really satisfy her sexually, give her the attention she desires, in direct conflict with the guilt and a strange loyalty to her husband. Gabby married for comfort and convenience and there’s no real passion involved.
“There is something about a bored, rich housewife. They’re lonely creatures. All they want to do is talk”
Marcel is pushy and demanding, Gabby is torn by her attraction and need, the the stage is set for the inevitable crash. Although the book is about adultery which is abhorrent, the author makes a good case for why it happens here. There is something about Kyle we don’t like; he seems attentive and dismissive at the same time. He’s not a generous lover, barely pleasing his wife and mostly seeking his own pleasure.
The book ends in a spectacular cliffhanger, where we find surprising information that helps us understand Gabby’s mind-set much better. Now to wait impatiently for the conclusion!
Geez-oh-Pete, what did I just read?! Ahhhhh! That ending has me all messed up. Shanora has quickly became one of my must read authors so when this sign up came across I was all in. Once again she nails it. This book…what can I say that doesn’t give anything away?! There’s so much going on and so many little secrets that when they come out it’s gut wrenching. The angst had me all squirmy. The hot steamy parts…yeah, buddy! Off the charts hot and totally one hand read worthy. I loved it and now I feel like my life will not be complete unless I get the next book. I would give this book 10 stars if I could. Hell, I’ll take a line from Billy Bob from Varsity Blues…10 fucking 10!
Anywho…don’t miss this book. Don’t wait for the second one. Get it ASAP and devour it just as much as I did. I will be rereading this one for sure!
The queen of forbidden romances is back with another heart splintering book with an earth shattering story of the ages. Yes, a story meant to be displayed on the museum. A work of art with so much heart cascading from its pages. Shanora Williams absolutely slays me. She writes really interesting stories but yet with so much feeling. You can’t help but feel the words. You can’t help but feel the characters and their chemistry. You can’t help but be sunk deeply into her gorgeous stories. I am in awe of Shanora Williams. Everybody needs to be blessed by Shanora Williams words. They will blind you. They will tear you apart. They will captivate you. They will entrance you. Let Shanora Williams take you on a unforgettable journey with her stories.
Gahh!!!!! All the feels!!! All the heartache!! My heart!! My soul!! Everything inside of me is broken. Everything inside me has trampled by a stunning story. Everything has been crushed by an amazingly written book with a storyline that shook me. As I pick the broken pieces of my heart, I am yet again taken to a fantastic and heart pummeling journey. A forbidden romance written with anguish and angst. A story of true connection. Honest connection. Intense connection. Soul-bending connection. A heart tilting story with so much heart warming feels and deeply rooted emotions. Emotions that scarred my heart. Emotions that took me on a ride with lots of highs and lows. The Man I Can’t Have entrapped me. Ensnared me. Locked me up tight and wouldn’t let go. Wow, my heart is blistered. Heart Wrapping. Soul Rending. Deep. The Man I Can’t Have is a complex story that explores a risky love with building friendship, sexual tension, pain and tantalizing chemistry taking you one hell of a journey full of emotions and raw angst. A truly rich story you need in your life.
Shanora Williams always delivers with her dynamics characters that paint a picture in your head. I became consumed with Marcel and Gabby, With their intense chemistry. With their blinding friendship. With their stolen moments of their beautiful connection. Marcel and Gabby will make your heart leap and bleed at the same time.
Wow, after finishing The Man I Can’t Have, I was speechless. I couldn’t even find the words to write my review. This book truly caused an inferno in my heart. I truly need The Man I Need asap. Seriously, The Man I Can’t Have is a must read. A well deserving book in my top 2019 list.
I just don’t know where to start with this review because this book is PHENOMENAL and Shanora knows how to write a story that captures you right from the first page till the end. When I read the blurb I knew I wanted to read this story because it was interesting.
Gabby is a house wife looking for a good landscape architect to make her dream yard. She looks around until she finds the one she likes and calls for an appointment. When the architect comes to her house Gabby starts to feel these feelings she has not felt in a longtime. She knows Marcel is the one to hire so she does hire him and things start to get tricky as they flirt with each other and things go from friendship to something I can’t explain because you have to read it.
But you know when you have your happiness someone is always there to ruin it and it happens for Gabby and boy oh boy that ending had me screaming at my kindle because I was not happy at all.
This is a must read part one to a duet and i need part two right now like ASAP!
I struggled with the story to be honest.
It’s not often I feel sucker punched by a book cover. I mean we all now the saying don’t judge the book by the cover, but I hold up my hand and admit, I’m guilty. I let this gorgeous cover captivate me and suck me in. Even the blurb got me.
The Man I Can’t Have is also my first book by Ms. Williams, and sadly will most likely be the last, which is a shame as is quite a prolific author with many titles under her belt. But, I just didn’t feel any connection to the characters, the felt flat, one dimensional and yeah, things happened that I wasn’t comfortable with. Was I expecting for the two leading characters to fall in love? But, the rest? Sorry, cheating is so not in my playbook.
There is a second part to this story too, and I don’t think I’ll bother with it. I hate writing such a negative review, but this story was just not my cup of tea. That’s my opinion and I know most others don’t feel the same.
I first saw the cover and title and said I want to read that! Then I read the blurb I and really wanted to read it like yesterday! I have never heard of the author Shanora Williams but man this introduction to her work was more than I could ask for.
Gabby and Marcel hit it off from day one, the chemistry and complex characters had me turning pages. This book is intense! It is steamy, emotional, has drama and gives me all the different feels.
The revelations in the last chapter about Kyle and the cliff-hanging ending have me on the edge of my seat for book 2!
My stomach is all twisted up, and it feels as if my heart is lodged in my throat. This story of Gabby literally has me feeling sick. It’s scary and heartbreaking and I CANNOT FUNCTION AFTER THAT CLIFFHANGER!
Where is book 2?! I NEED BOOK 2.
I need answers, and I don’t like feeling this way! Okay, I totally enjoy this feeling…but still. I need MORE Gabby — I need things to be okay. And I need MORE Marcel because…he is freakin’ EVERYTHING.
EVERY. SINGLE. THING.
And I need MORE of that adorable puppy! There was a smile plastered to my face every time she made an appearance…haha.
I’m a total mess and my feels *review* are all over the place. But THIS is the type of story I crave! The ones that give you a glimpse of hope, and then rips it from you. The Man I Can’t Have is crazy intense. Turbulent. Heart-gripping. And I’m dying for more!
The Man I Can’t Have was one of those books that grabbed my attention from the first page and didn’t let up even at the end. This amazing slowburn was full of drama, secrets, angst, and spellbinding characters I couldn’t help but root for. From their first meeting I knew Gabby and Marcel would pull at my heartstrings and I wasn’t wrong. These two had my emotions all over the place. I loved the push and pull between as their friendship evolved into something that neither expected nor could deny. The Man I Can’t Have was a captivating and forbidden slowburn that consumed me and left me anxiously awaiting the second book in this addictive duet.
The Man I Can’t Have was my first novel by Shanora Williams and so much more than I expected. This novel was intense, steamy, angsty and heartbreaking and gave me all the feels as we are taken on this illicit journey with Gabby and Marcel.
It starts of as a slow burn but the intense chemistry between them was evident and eventually this taboo relationship soon burns out of control. The steamy scenes were so hot and you feel every emotion these two feel as their relationship evolves. The authors portrayal of these two characters will have you rooting for them throughout the story as they are so likable and relatable.
This story will have you hooked from beginning to end. You will enjoy every moment and then when you get to the end that cliff-hanger will BLOW YOUR MIND. OMG…..I can’t wait for the next book in this duet.
TMICH was a breath-taking, well written, page-turner and I absolutely loved it. Definitely worthy of a 5 star status I would highly recommend it to all lovers of forbidden romances.
