Her newspaper seeks the inside scoop on criminal activities. Penny is reluctant and unfamiliar with the life of servants, but researches their work and takes on the unfamiliar role. Murders ensue, and with a Scotland Yard Detective, clues unfurl. In a plot rife with twists and turns, the factory owner tries to divert suspicion onto Penny, as well as others. An interesting view of life in Victorian England.
I enjoyed this series. Good story plot, keeps you guessing.
I enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this series and the young girl character. I like the things that she gets herself into going undercover and her love interest makes you want her and him to get together.
While I’m still sceptical about the whole premise of the book: a female reporter in that era, let alone acting undercover and getting away with it when she did it so poorly, I put all that aside to try to enjoy this “whodunnit” and figure out “whodunnit”!
This is the third book in this series and I like the careful way in which the main characters develop and their stories unfold and yet each book is a story in itself. I look forward to read the next book.
A well constructed tale that kept my interest through the whole book. The plot line was well thought out by the author and it was easy to become immersed in the story with no pauses or superfluous pages filled with unnecessary filler that added nothing to the story. Very enjoyable. I was sorry when I came to the end. I’ll certainly look for a continuation of this additional stories with this character by this author. Well Done!
I’ve just finished reading this and I loved it! Finally a mystery that threw me off balance, not being able to determine who the guilty culprit was. it’s really frustrating when I’m able to figure it out early in a story and then the rest is spoiled for me and I find myself going through the motions of reading to the end to see if my reasoning is the same as the writer. There are enough twists and turns and in this one to keep that from happening. I was a little surprised that more wasn’t said about the newly hired governess and the lack of further mention in the family’s life and also the lack of invitations to special functions or gatherings, or even any questioning of her by the police as to perhaps her having any information to help their case. Seeing as to the fact that she was a forgotten adult in the household. Finally at the end, the interaction between Penny and James. Thank you Emily!
Good series
I thought the book would have been much better. I did enjoy it to the point, where there were many characters involved. I felt like I was playing the board game “Clue”. It was still a good book.
I loved the concept and the characters and am planning to read more of this series
A great “who done it”. It’s part of a series, but each book can be read separately without ever reading the others. A mystery set in the Victorian age and very easy to read. It was great fun! I wholeheartedly recommend it.
A historical mystery. The main character is a newswoman who is persuaded to go undercover as a maid to discover a murderer.
Good read. Liked the historical element
A perfect vacation book. Not too heavy or serious. Good mystery, with good writing and excellent historical setting. The author narrows it down to a central mystery twisting replied. But written so well that there are several characters who could have their own plot line spin-offs.
The whole series is good and fun to read. If you want a good, fast read, check out this series.
Too slow moving for me.
I have read all the books in this series and loved every one! I will make a point to read all of this author’s books from now on.
Knew nothing about author, but found the book good reading. It was well written and unpredictable. Characters are true to their purpose. And, not an indecent word! PAS
This is the second book I have read by this author. They are fairly entertaining and keep you interested. Unusual content as they are written in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s so there is a different perspective. I enjoy them.
