There’s only one way to bury a secret… Lisa Taylor had friends, family and a job she loved back in Cleveland. But when her husband, Jeff, lands the promotion of a lifetime, she gives it all up to stand by him. Their whirlwind move to Miami feels like an adventure, their idyllic new neighborhood the perfect place to start a family. But their dreams are shattered when a stranger breaks into … breaks into their house, holding a knife to Lisa’s throat before Jeff can chase him off.
Suddenly, every sacrifice Lisa made is like a loss she’ll never recover from. But Jeff makes it clear there’s too much at stake to return to Ohio. Isolated and afraid, Lisa becomes a hostage in her own home. She can’t shake the feeling she’s being watched. And with the man she married growing increasingly unrecognizable, she’s starting to wonder whether their hasty move was to pursue a better life–or escape a chilling past that won’t be outrun.

The Lying House is yet another riveting thriller from Rick Mofina. How often have we heard the old adage: “If it’s too good to be true, it probably isn’t?” For Lisa Taylor, things are about as bad as they can be after she and husband Jeff uproot themselves from Cleveland so he can take a dream job in Miami. Get ready for a wild ride that grabs us in a captivating opening chapter and doesn’t let go until we turn the last page. There are no poor choices when it comes to selecting a novel by Rick Mofina, one of my favorite thriller writers. The Lying House is right up there alongside his best novels.
This is the first book that I’ve read by this author and it was excellent! There are twists and turns to the story and keeps you guessing until near the end. If you like a good mystery, pick this up and you won’t be able to put it down. I’ll definitely be looking for more books by this author. This book would make a terrific movie.
The beginning of the book pulls you into a beautiful, grand home in Miami where a couple from Ohio has moved. Jeff and Lisa had good jobs and worked hard and were now living the American dream. She left her management position to telecommunicate in a lower position so Jeff could move into his new high paid position. Remember moving and leaving family and friends behind…the stress and excitement. So when Lisa gets up to walk the house in the middle of the night, one understands why. The house, the rooms, the beautiful kitchen, a pool just outside that looks inviting, Lisa wants to step out and enjoy it all. The noise, the man, the knife.
Tension is thick in this book, the surprises and shocks keep on coming. To move and then be attacked in your own home and the police asking so many questions. The neighbors coming over, the new job and the expectations all coming at once. Lisa is horrified and wants to move home but Jeff, because of his past, won’t give into the fear. He wants this job desperately, but how badly….will he put the job before his wife.
And the phone calls from his past, and the go “get -them -gang “of neighbors watching the homes and carrying guns.
You move and hopefully have good neighbors.
You really hope the masked man doesn’t come back. And there seens to be a serial killer out there. Yes, Ohio is beginning to sound really good! 4 stars
Sit down and enjoy, suspense runs amok as do suspicions. Who is guilty and why does Lisa question her husband. Sometimes it’s hard to know who to trust. Enjoy as it gets creepy!!
Rick Mofina is my all time favorite author. I have yet to read a book of his that doesn’t hold my attention. I start reading them as soon as I get them. Thanks Rick
One of my favorite authors, Molina always delivers. No two books are the same. Original plots which draw you in.
Not sure where I’ve been, but I’ll be reading more of Rick Mofina’s books … this one took me from Cleveland to Miami and I enjoyed the ride.
A good story line, but not as good as other books by Rick Mofina. There are twists, but toward the end the unpredictability becomes more predictable.
Great book..great author!!
Hard to put down.
Well written.
Absolutely the best Mofina book I’ve read, and I’m a big fan! I was on the edge of my seat throughout the adventure!
A great mystery by a favorite author.
Jeff was not perfect, he had temper issues, driven to succeed, a grudge against the world, an a inferno rage in his heart. He worked for this promotion, he had to take it. The move was fast, he couldn’t go back. Then he mentions California why not before.
She had a master’s degree, she strived for that manager’s position, she gave it up, along with family and friends to go with him. She wanted to go home, back to safety, and support in Ohio.
They were survivors, he kept saying. She tried to repeat it, she needed to get out and start living instead of fear. An upscale neighborhood, they do patrol watches, House has a top of the line security, it was not enough.
Someone was watching her, he vowed he would make good his threat.
Chilling story, she felt so alone, her emotion felt real, now shattered. Another page turning book from the author.
I have enjoyed every Rick Mofina book. He is one of my favorite authors.
4.5 for me
You can’t go wrong with a Rick Mofina book.
Twists and turns, the pages fly by and the light stays on just to read one more chapter which becomes several more !
Loved The Lying House, a great read !!
Don’t miss this one
I’ve read everything Rick has written his is a literary genus for sure. A must read author for sure!
I have read & enjoyed many of Mofina’s books but this one seemed amateurish and seemed lacking in plot-planning. I almost put it down but gave him the benefit of the doubt; should have followed my instincts.
This book is not up to par with his other books.
