At Balaclava Agricultural College, a kidnapping and pig-napping are followed by murder Newlyweds Peter and Helen Shandy are picking out flatware when a pair of gun-toting hooligans burst into the silversmith’s shop, empty the safe, and leave with Helen as their hostage. Although the police recover Helen quickly, her professor husband is badly shaken by the ordeal. Early the next morning, the … ordeal. Early the next morning, the college’s head of animal husbandry frantically reports another hostage situation in progress. Belinda, the school’s beloved sow, has been kidnapped, and only Peter can bring home the bacon.
There is a possible witness to the pig-napping in Miss Flackley, the farrier, but before she can point Peter towards the vanished porker, she is found dead in the barn’s mash feeder. By the time Peter discovers the link between the two heists, pigs may really fly.

One of my favorites in this series! Great characters – love the character of the college!
Funny, witty, wonderful read!
I love the Peter Shandy series.
I love Charlotte McLeod’s books. The characters are laugh-out-loud funny, and the puns never stop. She does tend to be a bit “wordy” but still, very fun books to read. The Luck Runs Out opens with the theft of a prize pig, pickled pigs’ feet showing up on the doorstep of the owner, and a body in the barn. Join Peter Shandy and the entire Balaclava Agricultural College staff and student body as they search for who’s got the pig, and who killed the farrier.
I like all this author’s books.
These are clever and amusing.
It was missing pages
Well written. Didn’t know from one page to another what was going to happen. A very satisfied read.
I loved this book. The language and humor reminded me of “All Creatures Great and Small”, though the setting and characters were quite different. Set in a New England agricultural college, the mix of students, professors, wives and townies hilarious and brainy, gave a unique perspective. The murder occurs far enough into the story to make you care about the victim and the people involved, an essential element to me. You want to find the culprit(s) and make things right.
Fantastic author. Love all her books.
Pretty simplistic plot with good language usage which was totally intentional. The language/words were the best and gave me a good chuckle. The story and characters were pretty predictable, but for an easy read okay.
I really enjoyed this read, flowed well, funny narrative and great characters, all in a time gone by
Great addition to Peter Shandy series by my favourite Cozy Mystery Author.
I read this years ago and reread it just recently, and I believe the author was dead before I found her. That made me sad when I found out that there would be no new books. Her odd ball humor is wonderful and the returning characters are a little crazy, but fun and likable. Too bad there aren’t real colleges out there with humane, quirky instructors and students like those in Charlotte MacLeod’s imagination. Recommend to a read with a sense of humor.
This series is a bit unlikely but still fun if you’re in the mood for something light Very humorous. Nice people.
I love all of this authors books.
Anything Charlotte MacClead!

Charlotte McLeod is on my list of great American mystery authors, and this book does not disappoint. Well-developed characters and great plot. I love her sense of irony and humor.
Anything by Charlotte MacLeod is well worth reading
