Once in a generation a novel comes along that taps a vein of universal human experience, resonating with readers of all ages. The Lovely Bones is such a book – a phenomenal #1 bestseller celebrated at once for its narrative artistry, its luminous clarity of emotion, and its astoniishing power to lay claim to the hearts of millions of readers around the world.“My name was Salmon, like the fish; … like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973.”
So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on eath continue without her – her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling.
Out of unspeakable tragedy and loss, The Lovely Bones succeeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy.

I hated this book. So depressing, I should know any book that begins with a crime against children I will not like but I read it anyway. By far one the most depressing books I’ve read.
This story has kept me thinking about the possibilities posed by the author years after I finished reading it.
One you won’t soon forget.
A very original perspective from which to write a book. It takes real creativity and writing talent to write a book in this way. Character development was outstanding and always keep the reader wondering what would happen to each of them as this tragedy unraveled and impacted each of their lives over their life times. The horror of price of the …
Thought provoking.
Very dark and past my comfort level regarding real life trauma.
Read only if you can bear a truly sad story.
Number 1 best seller or not, I didn’t enjoy this book!
I have never forgotten this amazingly well told story! Read it.
I wish I had written this book. I liken it to kill a Mockingbird
My sister got this for me on Christmas. At first, I did not know what to think. I knew that the movie, which I had never watched until after I had read it and now wish I had not watched it (the best original part of which is Jack Salmon, played by Mark Walberg, is him bugging the police with names), was rated PG-13 so I was afraid it would be a …
Ooo, what a ride. It’s beautiful, yet eye opening into a sad tale. Read this book – you’ll be better for it.
A different perspective in telling the tale of a murdered girl from her side of the story. It is a scary, painful journey through the story of her death and how it touches everyone who knew her in life and death.
I loved the perspective from which this story was told.
Well-written and mysterious. Worth the read. I was a bit disappointed in the ending.
Written from the perspective of a teenaged murder victim, Lovely Bones is a touching and fascinating glimpse into the psyche of a child frozen in eternity who must come to terms with watching her family struggle with her loss, as well as the knowledge that her killer still hunts others. Inexpectedly uplifting and hopeful, I loved this one.
it was awful. trite. maudlin.
Beautifully written.
It’s hard to describe such a tragic book as beautiful, but it is. The relationships between the characters make it supremely readable in spite of the subject matter. I love the fact that the ending wasn’t exactly what I’d hoped for. It was truly clever, deeply moving and the narrative flows perfectly.
I have heard wonderful things about this book but I just couldn’t read it. The topic was much too heavy for me.
