Lizzie is the Duke of Brighthollow’s sister and when she was 16 she made a choice that changed her life forever.
“The world was a dangerous place and she could never fall prey to a rogue again. She could never, ever again let herself be so seduced by a false promise of love or adventure. It was staid responsibility for her for the rest of her days.”
Morgan is the half-brother of Robert, the Duke of Roseford, he is just one of the bastard children from the previous Duke of Roseford. Morgan has a chip on his shoulder and is making terrible choices. When we meet Morgan, he’s in jail after a night of women, gambling, fighting and drinking. His brother Robert is there to bail him out, under one condition…he needs to get his act together. He needs a respectable job, and Robert has just the thing…a Man of Affairs for his best friend the Duke of Brighthollow, Hugh.
Lizzie is does not trust Rakes, Rogues or Libertines…she learned her lesson the hard way. She is guarded and just waiting for the day she can be classified a spinster. However, that may change when the handsome Morgan shows up with her brother. He’s going to test all of Lizzie’s resolve!
“This libertine had just winked at her. And it threw her back to four years before, when her world had been torn to pieces by a man who was equally handsome and charming. Well, perhaps not equally.”
Yep, Morgan is definitely going to challenge Lizzie…but maybe, just maybe, two broken, untrusting souls can find a way to become friends and learn to trust again.
This book was sweet, I enjoyed all the characters and the story kept me turning the pages. I can’t wait for Robert and Morgan’s half sister Selina’s story next. I enjoy all of Ms. Michaels books and this was no different and I did will definitely continue to read and recommend her books!
Lady Elizabeth Margolis made a huge mistake when she was only sixteen, she trusted her heart and body to the wrong man and paid an enormous price for it. But four years have passed and Elizabeth is still paying the price, she doesn’t believe that the love that her brother Hugh, Duke of Brighthollow and all of his friends have found is for her, she avoids socializing and is happiest at Hugh’s country estate. She found her late mother’s plans for the gardens and has made it her mission to make those plans come to life. She has convinced Hugh that she needs to return to the estate and get to work, rather than have a season. Hugh agrees, but sends her and his wife Amelia ahead, he claims to have some business and will join them in a few days. Elizabeth doesn’t think anything of it until Hugh arrives with a gorgeous man who is introduced as his new man of business.
Morgan Banfield is the illegitimate son of the late Duke of Roseford, he is a rake and has no real purpose in life. When he wakes in Newgate, he can’t really recall what he did to land in gaol, but he is sure it has to do with a former friend he wronged. He is contemplating his options when his half-brother Robert Smithton, the new Duke of Roseford bails him out. Robert brings him to his house and makes it clear that he is worried about him and suggests he take the position of man of business to Robert’s good friend Hugh. Morgan accepts the job and is actually looking forward to having an occupation and being away from the temptations in town. He too is shocked when he meets Elizabeth, who is one of the most beautiful women he has ever met and he wonders if fate has decided to torment him by teasing him with what he can never have.
The two form a friendship and Morgan is surprisingly insightful in regards to Elizabeth. Elizabeth begins to wonder if love is possible for her, but just when it seems HEA could be theirs, the demons that drove Morgan away from London find him and he will have to deal with them before he can consider a future with Elizabeth, the problem is, dealing with the past may permanently end any possibility of a future.
This was a well written, fast paced, emotional story with strong ties to the 1797 Club series. Morgan and Elizabeth are complex characters with painful pasts but together they seem to sooth each other’s hurts and the reader become invested in their HEA. The book has cameos with several previous characters, steamy love scenes, a lot of emotion and a very hard won HEA. This is the first book in the series, and while it is not necessary, but it would be helpful if you have read the previous series, just so you know who is who and have a better understanding of the characters and their motivations.

The Love of a Libertine is the first in The Duke’s Bastards series by Jess Michaels.
This was a very well written and thoroughly engaging regency romance. The characters were wonderful and well developed and the story well paced. The family dynamic was great and very supportive throughout the story. Morgan and Lizzie were well suited, both have made mistakes in the past and both learn that true love is worth the risk.
The Love of a Libertine by Jess Michaels is the First book in The Duke’s Bastards Series. This is the story of Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Margolis and Morgan Banfield. Lizzie is a shy women who trusted to easyly which lead to her ruin. Now she is guarding her heart and doubts her judgement when it comes to men. This comes into play when she meets Morgan. Morgan is one of the former Duke of Roseford illegitimate children. Robert Smithson who is the current Duke of Roseford (his story was in The Duke of Desire) is Morgan’s half brother. So when Morgan takes his drinking, gambling and womanizing to far he ends up in Newgate. This leads Robert to come there to get Morgan out of there. But Robert has offered him a job as ‘Man of Affairs’ to the Duke of Brighthollow. This is how he meets Lizzie and starts their story. Really enjoyed their story and this author’s writing.
Can the past be overcome?
Jess Michaels at her best with her wounded characters that always draw me in to see how they achieve their redemption. A perfect combination of angst, past hurts and resentments, with amazing characters that are etched out of their experiences, truly only wanting love and acceptance.
This is Morgan’s story, one of the bastard sons of the prolific Duke of Roseford, as he seems to have inherited his sire’s wastrel ways and how Robert, the true heir and his half brother helping him get free and put his life together.
But even more, it is also Lizzie’s story, who had a heart wrenching experience when she was only sixteen and has no use for libertines or rakes and ends up having Morgan working as the steward to her brother. The two seem to be paired together and begin to form a friendship and realizing they have a lot in common.
Can Morgan come to be the man he should and Lizzie trust again? A truly magnificent story and a wonderful beginning to this new series that I eagerly await to read. A story of the heart. I read this through NetGallery and the Publisher.
I adored this book. It’s a lovely romance about two people who need to stop punishing themselves for their pasts so they can start living (and find love). Lizzie has spent the last several years feeling guilty over being manipulated by the villain from The Duke Who Lied, blaming herself for being human. Morgan has also spent the last bit of his life on a downward spiral over guilt for hurting his friend. Both of them also have complicated feelings towards their older brothers (Morgan’s is The Duke of Desire) who sought to help them, but in certain ways over-protected them so they couldn’t process things for themselves. When Morgan becomes Lizzie’s older brother’s man of affairs, the two develop a lovely slow-burn friendship through understanding that helps them both figure out what they need to feel like they can truly claim a life for themselves and its so lovely to watch. The sex is hot and the chemistry is amazing, and it was a wonderful, emotional read.
Morgan Banfield knows he’s hit rock bottom when he wakes up in Newgate and is bailed out by his half-brother, Robert, the Duke of Roseford. Morgan doesn’t really want a relationship with the man, but recognizes he needs help and in order to get it, Morgan must agree to apply himself to the position of Man of Affairs for Robert’s friend, the Duke of Brighthollow.
Lady Elizabeth Margolis is distressed by the admission of a known rake to her home. After her complete ruination four years previously, she’s completely intolerant to most men and to rakes especially. But as Lizzie spends time working on garden plans with Morgan, she comes to know him and is inexplicably drawn to him. She tries to keep her distance as she continues to struggle with her unwanted desire and her untrustworthy heart.
Just as Morgan begins to think he could truly start over and have a respectable life with Lizzie, enemies he made in the past emerge to threaten their fledgling connection and may be too much for them to overcome.
This book was rather a slow burn and took me a while to get into, but once Lizzie and Morgan stopped trying to keep their distance from each other, things heated up pretty fast. I loved that this wound up being a story of growth and redemption for both Lizzie and Morgan in different ways. He took responsibility for his mistakes and made a conscious effort to do better, she learned to stand up for herself and be strong, and they both learned to forgive themselves for those past mistakes. The honesty and open communication that developed between these two was lovely. They wound up being adorable together and I loved them as a couple and how open they were about their feelings for one another. I also really enjoyed Morgan’s developing relationship with Robert and his growing friendship with the other dukes. I wound up really enjoying this book; it was a great start to the new series and I can’t wait for more.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Elizabeth was seduced at sixteen by a libertine and ruined. Now years later she trusts no man. When her brother hires the half-brother of one of his friends as a steward at one of his estates, Elizabeth is leery because of his reputation. The man she comes to know is gentle and kind and can read her every thought. Between them the sparks go up in flames. An emotional rollercoaster with tears, fear and a happy ending. Michaels doesn’t disappoint.

Morgan Banfield has woken up in prison, with an aching head and no clear recollection of everything that happened to land him here. There are flashes of drinking, gambling, and a woman – a typical day for Morgan. His half brother, Robert, the Duke of Roseford, has arrived to bail him out, and Morgan knows he’s in for a lecture. Robert used to be quite the wild child himself, but he still believes that Morgan’s life seems to be spinning out of control. He financially supports Morgan, and is trying to form a closer relationship between them. Robert offers Morgan the opportunity to have a real vocation by becoming the business manager for his friend, the Duke of Brighthollow. Surprisingly, something deep inside Morgan finds this appealing, and he agrees to give it a try.
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Margolis believed herself to be in love at the young age of sixteen. Her suitor encouraged her to meet him in secret, and eventually to elope, convincing her that her brother and guardian, the Duke of Brighthollow would never allow them to be together. When her brother catches up with them en route to Gretna Green, her suitor reveals his true colors. He is a fortune hunter, preying on a young, gullible heiress. Lizzie is shamed, and accompanies her brother home, vowing to never love or feel passion again. In the intervening four years, she has lived quietly, and avoided society as much as her brother will allow.
Morgan and Lizzie have an immediate and strong reaction to meeting each other. While Morgan’s response is his usual charming flirtatiousness, Lizzie is horrified and withdraws even further. She can’t believe that she can feel attraction after the harsh lesson she learned, so she tries rudeness, avoidance, and giving Morgan the cold shoulder. Still, she can’t resist when he offers his assistance on her pet project, restoring her deceased mother’s garden.
There are hidden depths to Morgan. Beneath his cynical, rakish persona, he deeply feels the sting of being illegitimate. He denies that he wants love, either from his brother, or with a woman, but he will come to see that this is truly what he desires. He has a good mind, and solid instincts about people. He can see that Lizzie is so skittish because she’s been hurt. He observes her kindness and care of others, and wonders what it is in her past that caused her to build those walls around herself.
Lizzie and Morgan long for each other, but he feels he’s not good enough for a duke’s sister, while she feels that she is truly ruined. Eventually their strong affinity for each other will bring them together in passion, showing Lizzie that her brief and painful experience is not the normal way between a man and a woman. I loved watching them grow and learn to understand themselves even more. I especially liked seeing Morgan lose the chip on his shoulder, while Lizzie gained confidence in herself as a woman. They share their pasts as well as their bodies, but any future together seems doubtful, especially when danger arrives, putting Morgan, and possibly the household in peril. THE LOVE OF A LIBERTINE is a steamy, yet sweet romance, with characters who are definitely flawed, but find redemption, peace, self worth, and a genuine love.
A ruined miss. A libertine bastard brother. Their titled brothers inadvertently bring them together and sparks fly. Morgan and Elizabeth (Lizzie) are each battling an element of the past in an effort to move forward. Can they find their way? Each one wants to be more independent than society and family seems to allow. I like that they both learn to lean into their supportive families while still standing up for themselves. The attraction between the two is easy to see on the page. Lizzie fluctuates between some fire and a whispering, insecure miss and I really did not get a good feel for either direction. I felt she was best portrayed in her wish to not be in society, given her past. I would have loved to see more of her fire, it’s clearly there. Morgan is trying to reform from a libertine lifestyle, but it comes back to haunt him. I understood Morgan’s motivations and struggles to prove himself and felt he was more fully realized.
This is the first in a series, but contains characters that appear to have been in prior books, which I have not read. I was able to follow this story fine as a standalone. Knowing more about some of the surrounding characters could enrich the story for the reader.
The pace was excellent and I was drawn along easily with the story. While there were a few repetitions that distracted me – why is everyone whispering when they talk?? – I enjoyed the overall story. The heat level is good, sexy times on the page. I will be checking out more by Michaels.
I received an advance reader’s copy via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
The Love of a Libertine by Jess Michaels
The Duke’s Bastards #1
What if your father was a selfish lord that took what he wanted when he wanted to and ended up with children that are half siblings but don’t know one another all that well? And, what if the lord’s son, now a duke, has decided to become friends with his half siblings and those half siblings are less than impressed with the idea? Well, if that were to happen then you might have the makings of an interesting series and that is just what I believe this series will be.
Robert has bailed Morgan out again and this time suggests he work as a man of affairs for a friend of his. So, Morgan agrees and heads off to start his job. The first person he notices…REALLY notices…is Elizabeth, his employer’s sister. Morgan is taken with Lizzie but is there any way the two can or should be together with the gap in social status and the back stories they carry…that is the question.
What I liked:
*Elizabeth: a good woman that made a mistake and has lived with it for four years. She fears gossip, is shy and sometimes referred to as a mouse but if that is so then she is one of the mice that roared.
* Morgan: a man who has a checkered past. He is intelligent, musical, artistic, and perfect for Lizzie.
* Hugh: Elizabeth’s brother who is there for her no matter what. He seems to have forgotten she is an adult and tries to wrap her in cotton
* Robert: Morgan’s brother is a rake that settled down with the right woman. He cares about his half siblings and wants the best life for them.
* Ewan: Loved seeing him again along with the three wives of the dukes in this story
* The idea of how one’s past can have such a huge impact on people
* The way Morgan and Lizzie were there for one another. REALLY liked their story!
What I did not like:
* Aaron…the man in Lizzie’s past. It was so easy to dislike him!
* Having to say goodbye to the characters in the book and having to wait to find out who will star in book two of the series.
Did I enjoy this book? Definitely
Would I read more in this series? Without a doubt
Thank you to NetGalley and The Passionate Pen, LLC for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This is the first book in the Duke’s Bastards series. It is the story of Morgan and Lizzie, both of whom have made life changing mistakes in their pasts. They try to overcome their past mistakes to have a future together. I received an ARC from The Passionate Pen and NetGalley for my honest review.
I quite liked this book.
Why? Elizabeth, when she was sixteen fell in love like most young girls do, only, she was played quite cruelly by a libertine who only wanted her money. Which he got and more. She gave up her innocence and then, as a female, paid the price and lived a dutiful life for the next four years. I liked how her brother handled the whole situation.
Morgan is prone to dissolution, easy women, drinking, fighting and waking up in prison, as the bastard son of a duke is wont to do. Not sure if the was the right match for Elizabeth, because he was so much like Aaron (the man who done her wrong).
I think that Elizabeth had much growth and Morgan certainly needed to do a lot of growing up, just felt like he never did. 4.5
Steamy.
When Morgan Banfield wakes up in Newgate after a night of debauchery, the last thing he wants to see is his half brother, Robert Duke of Roseford. But in exchange for his help, Morgan must agree to take on responsibility and try to get his life together by taking on the job of Man of Affairs for a friend.
The last thing Lizzie Margolis wants is some rogue coming onto her brother Hugh, Duke of Brighthollow’s staff. She’s had enough of rakes after being ruined by one years before.
This is the first book in a new series & features the bastard children of the former Duke of Roseford so an added bonus is that we get to catch up with some of the characters from the 1797 Club books. we first met Lizzie in High’s book & I’m glad that she’s at last had her story. I loved this book of two damaged people finding each other. Lizzie came across as a wilting violet until she began to find her confidence first standing up to & beautifully putting a ‘friend’ in her place & finally she stood up for Morgan & herself in front of her family & close friends. I loved Morgan who hid his hurt behind a façade & I loved how he gradually lowered his guard to let people especially Lizzie in. The attraction between the pair was electric & they brought out the best in each other. I certainly look forward to the rest of the series as a couple of half siblings have been mentioned. I found the book to be an engrossing read that I read in two sittings
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I read this book quickly as I couldn’t put it down. It drew me in slow but steadily mesmerized me with how detailed and realistic it felt. I have read a ton of books by Jess Michaels and she is one of my favorite authors. This book did not disappoint!
Morgan Banfield was born on the wrong side of the blanket and doesn’t understand why his “brother,” The Duke of Rosewood wants anything to do with him. He feels down and withdrawn due to the pain he has caused a close friend. This causes him to throw himself in gambling and partying. Being thrown into the gaols gives him time to think and when his brother gets him out he agrees to work for his brother’s friend.
Lizzie Margolis is babied by everyone, due to a mistake in her past. No one can see that she understands the mistakes she made and will not let it happen again. She is withdrawn and shy as a result of this past accident. She slowly is pulled out of her shell by Mr. Banfield but will her family accept a by-blow?
Having been a huge fan of Jess Michaels’ 1797 Duke’s Club series of books I have been looking forward to this new set. The Dukes Bastard’s series follows Robert, the Duke of Roseford’s, half siblings, of which there are quite a few and his attempts to ensure they are all well and taken care of. Morgan, our hero is angry and bitter when we meet him, determined not to accept anyone’s help believing he is unworthy. Lizzie, our heroine who we know from the Duke books, also feels unworthy and alone. Circumstances bring them together, realizing they have much in common a friendship begins that ultimately leads to love. Past deeds and differences in station force our couple to make hard choices. Ultimately love finds a way and they get their happy ever after. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the rest of the series. It was lovely to revisit characters from the Duke series and see how they have faired. Jess’s writing gets better and better with a mix of drama, laughs and love it is the perfect combination. I highly recommend this book.
Morgan Banfield is in real trouble this time as he ponders his fate in Newgate. Not remembering how he got there, he’s even more surprised when his ducal brother Robert pays his debts and bails him out. There’s a condition though–he must accept the man of business position for Robert’s friend, the Duke Brighthollow. Morgan bristles at Robert’s high handedness, but he soon realizes he enjoys the work. The one caveat is Lizzie, the duke’s sister who is an innocent and off limits to Morgan. What he doesn’t know is that Lizzie suffered a tragic deception when she was 16 and has vowed never to risk her heart again. Can Morgan draw the shy beauty out of her shell?
I always enjoy Jess Michael’s books and this one is no exception. It might have been helpful to read “The Duke Who Lied” to get a better understanding of Lizzie and her brother Hugh, but it’s not necessary to enjoy this book. Poor Lizzie–she was such a broken character and I loved how Morgan helped her find her voice as they worked on her deceased mother’s garden. Of course Morgan’s past has come back to haunt him just when he and Lizzie were getting close. Morgan’s growth from selfish rake to honorable gentleman taking responsibility for his past actions is a very good character arc. I was routing for Morgan and Lizzie at the outset and thought the final conflict was a great addition to the story.
Series: The Duke’s Bastards #1
Publication Date: 5/19/20
Number of Pages: 240
This is a wonderful start to a new series. The main characters are both so very likable and so perfect for each other. I also love that the bastards are the illegitimate offspring of the former Duke of Roseford who was a cruel and profligate man who left children everywhere. Robert Smithson, the new Duke of Roseford, featured in The Duke of Desire, has continued to support those half-brothers and sisters and wants to form a closer bond with them. This is the story of Morgan Banfield who seems to have inherited all of the wildness and penchant for trouble his father had. We also meet Selina Oliver a half-sister and there is mention of half-brother Nicholas Gillingham, so I assume we’ll get their stories in later books. So, all-in-all it is a great start to the series.
Morgan was out for a night of drinking, gambling, and wenching when he came across a man who had once been a close friend – but Morgan had wronged him. Morgan didn’t deal well with that encounter and drank and gambled more and more and more – until he awoke in Newgate gaol. As he is awakening in the filth and smell of the prison, he hears the voice of his half-brother, Robert, and groans. Robert gets him out of jail and then coerces him into working for Hugh Margolis, the Duke of Brighthollow, as his Man of Affairs. Morgan doesn’t know if he is up to the job or not but thinks he might be ready for some changes in his life.
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Margolis is shy, but she’s also filled with self-doubt. She doesn’t trust her judgment – her decisions – and she certainly doesn’t trust most males, especially those who are rakes and libertines. When she learns that one is coming to work for her brother, she is beside herself. How could Hugh do that? Then, when the rogue arrives, he is her worst nightmare – he’s handsome as sin and charming as the devil. She’s drawn to him despite her best efforts. Did she not already learn that lesson? Evidently not, because the attraction only grows.
When Morgan is tasked with helping Lizzie execute her mother’s plans for the garden, they get to know each other better. As they grow together, they share the secrets of their pasts – and then Morgan’s shows up to haunt them. Will that make them realize how much they love each other – or will their future be lost before it even begins?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved getting to catch up with some of the Dukes from the 1797 Club series. As mentioned above, there is Robert and Katherine (Duke of Desire), Hugh and Amelia (The Duke Who Lied), and my very favorite, Ewan and Charlotte (The Silent Duke). However, what I really loved was the romance between Morgan and Lizzie because they complemented each other so well. Each brought their own kind of strength to the relationship and they each made the other stronger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The publication of a new book by Jess Michaels is always a cause for celebration. A new series? Even better! The Love of a Libertine is her first book in The Duke’s Bastards series. These books will center around the illegitimate children of the father of Robert, the Duke of Roseford, of The 1797 Club (a previous series). If you haven’t read those books, do not fret. This book totally stands alone. If you’ve read them, rejoice! You will catch up with Roseford and two friends from that series. But it’s the beautiful romance of Lizzie and Morgan that glows here.
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Margolis, the younger sister of Hugh, the Duke of Brighthollow, was ruined by a rake when she was just 16 years old. Years later, you could imagine she was not thrilled to find out Hugh’s friend Robert has asked him to employ his libertine half-sibling, Morgan Banfield, as his new Man of Affairs. Morgan’s life has gone to hell in a handbasket, and Robert is desperate to help him try to turn his life around before he’s irretrievably broken. Lizzie tries to resist the handsome scoundrel to avoid further pain, but they can’t help but be drawn to each other. When Morgan’s past comes back to bite him, will they both become lost and broken once again?
This was simply a beautiful romance between two fascinating characters. Lizzie wanted to avoid being hurt again, so she desired to stay in the country and just work bringing to life her deceased mother’s plans for the garden. Hugh was a wonderful, supportive brother, but he and his beloved wife wanted to protect Lizzie in a Regency era version of bubble wrap. Morgan’s non-relationship with his deceased father ruled how his entire life was turning out. He was in a downward spiral, but his attraction to Lizzie made him want to be a better man. His inner thoughts regarding Lizzie sounded beautifully poetic to me. She “saw” him, and he understood her. Their passion for each other could not be contained, leading to fiery intimacy. This is one area that Ms. Michaels particularly excels in her writing. Some authors make the sexy times sound like “insert part ‘a’ into slot ‘b'”; not so with Ms. Michaels. While her scenes are extremely sexual and descriptive, the emotions between the hero and heroine shine forth, making it a beautiful event. The supporting characters in this story are also wonderful, especially Hugh and Robert. I sobbed during the last 20 percent of the book; that’s a sign of an engaging story in my opinion. I await with bated breath the next installment of this awesome new series!
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Elizabeth Margolis is a sixteen-year-old girl, who has been duped by a Libertine. Who just wanted her dowry. He convinced her to run away with him and marry. Luckily her brother found them and took her away but she would forever blame herself for hurting him. Her brother was the Duke of Brighthollow, Hugh Margolis, and had cared for her since their parents died when she was a little child.
Morgan Banfield found himself in Newgate Prison. Really surprised. His stepbrother waited on the other side of the metal bars. The Duke of Roseford, Robert Smithton, had paid his debts. That way he could leave prison plus he had a proposition for him. Morgan was wild like his father and even Robert had a time when he had gone wild. But he hurt a lot of people even his best friend.
A wonderful well-written story. Elizabeth and Morgan had both a rough time and they had been injured emotionally. She was not interested in the season. He was having a hard time settling down.
All the three sets of dukes wanted nothing but the best for them. The characters were engaging, fun, and very interesting. I loved the tale and it was entertaining. I am so glad I read this novel. I highly recommend it.
