Captain John “Black Jack” Geary’s legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic “last stand” in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance Fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndic.
Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is … nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance’s one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic “Black Jack” legend…

A well written, action packed novel full of interesting, believable characters. I found myself drawn to their realistic portrayals and was well and truly invested in their struggles. Jack Campbell’s world building is very well done with no detail overlooked.
A friend gave me this novel over Christmas, and once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. Very interesting world building, and tropes (namely King Arthur) are used and then wildly taken apart in new and interesting ways. The only thing I didn’t quite get was the ancestor worship – but I’m happy to overlook that for great MSF action.
DAUNTLESS is the first novel in the Lost Fleet series which has the premise of Captain John “Black Jack” Geary being a officer who has been stuck in stasis for a century. Much to his dismay, he finds out his heroic last stand has been elevated to Davey Crocket at the Alamo/King Arthur levels of proportion. So much so that he is treated as the …
The whole series was
GREAT !!!!!
One for most original stories I have ever read?
The 1st of an extensive rich and fun universe. Start here with an Authorian style tale of a returned hero and the watch It jink off kilter. LOVE THEM ALL.
Good story and compelling which lead me to buying all of the books in the series
Jack Campbell’s writing has helped me in my own writing career. His character Black Jack Geary is thoroughly enjoyable. This book has great sci-fi elements that wrap you up in a story you want to go on forever.
Loved every book in this series. Moved from one book to the next in rapid fire as I couldn’t get enough of the action as well as the character development. The sexual tension between some of the characters was palpable and added to the excitement as well. The realistic “feel” of the huge distances of space during the battles and the travel between …
A GREAT space opera. I’m not sure this is the first, but The Lost Fleet is an exciting ride
Space war novels are a dime a dozen. This one is worth your time. It feels military. It is not some stupid ego gratification day dream, Enjoy! Wish the rest of the series was quite so expensive. If you like this genre dig deep in your pockets.
I loved the story. Military fiction but the main character has an interesting backstory, and his conflicts with officers much older and thinking themselves more suited to command kept my interest throughout. Only complaint is that it’s a series, and an expensive one ($7.99 each on Kindle).
Good space opera, nothing more or less. Very good diversion.
A good read. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Captain John “Black Jack” Geary is rescued from a century of hibernation in his survival space pod. When the admiral is gunned down by the enemy, Black Jack must save the remaining fleet from destruction. The enemy has more ships and has easily defeated the fleet due poor leadership and tactics. Will the fleet make it out of the clutches of …
I had a hard time putting it down.
Awesome, I really enjoyed it. I am now hooked on the author and the series.
Was not disappointed
Great book in an excellent series!
The author has several series, all set in the universe set up in this first series, and they are all space opera at its best. Fun reads, all of them!
