A cadet encounters hazing and racism at an elite military academy in this novel from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Prince of Tides. As Will McLean begins his studies at the Carolina Military Institute, the American South is in turmoil over desegregation. An outsider to the harsh authoritarianism of the military, Will survives the school’s notorious freshman hazing, and avoids … notorious freshman hazing, and avoids attention from its fabled and menacing secret society, the Ten.
But when he is asked to mentor the school’s first black student, Will is drawn into the intense racial politics—and the threat of violence—simmering beneath the surface.
Based on Conroy’s own military school experience and featuring his lush prose and richly drawn characters, The Lords of Discipline is a powerful story of a young man’s stand for justice and the friendship, love, and courage he finds along the way.

Rough story of what could be in a military school, amazing characters and story
Each page a work of art. Good to read on a an e-reader where the “broaden your vocabulary “ is easy to look up
I read it several times and enjoyed it each time.
Pat Conroy is an amazing author!
Pat Conroy is a wonderful writer and his books although fiction are based on actual events in his life. I have read every book he has written and Lords of Discipline is as excellent as all the others.
This author writes anything beautifully. It is a haunting story that stayed with me for a long time.
This novel is the reason that author Pat Conroy was shunned from his alma mater, The Cidetal, for thirty years. It is an excellent mystery with the normal exceptional writing from its author. It demonstrates how the school’s motto, Honor, Duty, Respect, is taught, lived, and burns internally when a cadet or graduate fails to meet its high …
One of the very best books I’ve ever read! The authors prose is haunting. Not only does he tell a good story but the language of his paint brush vividly pulls us in to the emotion of the story. He is my favorite author.
Another of the classic novels from Conroy. It doesn’t get any better.
I’ve never read a book by this author that I did not love.
Convoy paid a great personal price to write and publish this memoir about his time at a military college (The Citadel). The price he paid though has. Enriched the rest of us. He tells us why, as a young man of intellect and empathy, he was alternatively enamored with and repulsed by the culture at his military preparatory school. He describes …
I’m listening to this in audible – I’m a huge fan now especially after watching an interview with him – so interesting. Check it out!
A key work for understanding the military culture and how boys become men (not necessarily honorable or good ones) in the military tradition.
Stylistically perfect and filled with psychological insights based on personal experience
Conroy at his best. A fascinating glimpse of military life behind the fabled Citadel. Read it and thank me later!
