One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. … lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
From Sauron’s fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.
When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.
This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

The Hobbit is by far the best of Tolkien’s work I believe, or the one I enjoyed the most. But read the whole series as a child and have seen the movies several times. Read the entire series and start with the Hobbit….then watch the movies.
Absolutely a favorite series and readable over and over! A treasure for young and old!
I first read this book at 17, I cried when I finished the last page because I knew I would never read it for the first time again. I also knew I would never read a better book. I am sixty now and I was right. After a lifetime of reading and study and a university education I have never read a better book. It was worth being alive to read this …
Extremely creative and well-written; a true delight of immersion.
Red the books and watched the movie series a number of times.
This remains one of my all time favourites.
Well, I’m sure it’s been over a decade since I last read them.. for the probably dozenth time.. So, they’re not just classic but, deeply written with words that create a world populated with creations of real magic… are you still reading this.? Get off the fence there and expand your inner realms. . . .
I’ve read this book several times and never tire of it. Although a Christian book, some people don’t recognize it as such (it is not a true allegory of the Christ story). Tolkien was a devout Christian. This book is an absolute delight. I learn something new everytime I read it.
A classic. Should be in every reader’s wheelhouse.
My favorite of all time. Reread countless times.
I have read LORD OF THE RINGS several times. I’ve never regretted the time spent. I would encourage you to read this and be prepared to exist between it’s pages forever.
My favorite novel of all time.
Love the Lord of the Rings and it’s world building, although at times feels a little disjointed at times. The character building is good and gathers you into the story as well.
This is the best book ever written. Tolkien pulls you into the world of middle earth with Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Aragon and many other characters. If you have only watched the movies the I highly recommend that you read the book. There is many thing left out of the movies that book brings to life.
Must read!
Great Read
Who doesn’t like LOTR.
Worth many re-readings for character plot and beautiful, lyrical writing
It’s an icon of the Fantasy genre. The book is better than the movie (I know, hard to believe).
I love Tolkien. His background in linguistics makes his poetry spectacular. I love the rhythm of his words. And I love the detail in which he’s developed his world. I love the characters. All right, I confess, Aragorn is my favorite.
My favourite book of all times. Sorry if you’ve watched the movie instead.
