One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. … lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
From Sauron’s fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.
When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.
This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

A true classic; in love with middle earty
A fantasy for all ages. If you have seen the movies, you have missed so much! Be sure to read the books for a total immersion into Middle Earth with Frodo, Sam Gamgee and friends.
One of best books I’ve ever read. (assuming you read the whole set of 3, or 4 if you include the Hobbit). I first read these book as a young teen and have re-read all of them 10 or more times. The movies they released are good, but as usual, not nearly as good as the books.
A classic fantasy story that everyone should read at least once
Best book ever
I have this set in several different formats. I have read it over ten times and each time it gets better!
This is a keeper. To be read again!
So glad I have read this trilogy. It was a roller coaster ride and I felt a part of the story.
It was great. I didn’t want to put it down. As a rule I don’t read a book again but I have read this one and all the other’s they are great. Loved every minute of it.
This book will bring you in and take you for a wonderful adventure .
The fanstasy masterpiece that literally defined the genre. Tolkien, an Oxford professor of linguistics, was a master of language and of writing, and this was his life’s work. The themes are deep and multi-layered, and the imagery and plot eminently engrossing. I have read it 6 times.
Loved it in the 70’s and loved it again now 1/2018
Still my favorite book(s) after all these years
Classic fantasy. One of the standard bearers. The tracking sequences in the Two Towers are some of my favorite. 137 endings, but still fantastic.
There is a reason The Lord of the Rings is greatest fantasy book/series ever written. That reason is Tolkien himself. Immersed in the world of Mediaeval literature, conversant not only with the writings but their historical setting too, Tolkien takes these ingredients and adds to them his own masterful philological skills and his deep intuitive …
A most entertaining tale. Hours of pleasure and time to get away from the mundane world around and find a quest to share.
A classic all should read.
Outstanding series! I’ve read them 3 times since my teens.
One of the best books of all time.
it is an old favorite, getting it at a discount for my iPad was great
The classic that spawned the movies. Should be required reading for every high school student.
