One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. … lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
From Sauron’s fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.
When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.
This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

Love it , has always been one of my favorites!
There are fantasies and there is the “The Lord of the Rings”. By far the best novel I have ever read. Searingly beautiful.
This book is a true classic written at a time when more pages was considered better. The story line is amazingly creative however this classic suffers from a tendency of the times to provide page after page of fantasized historical background that has no relevance to the story in progress. The book would be far better read for todays audience if …
My favorite books ever!
I have been re-reading these books every fall for the last 40+ years — they NEVER grow old. Like part of the family. Highly recommend–especially if you watched the movies–which are NOTHING like the books!
I needed something to read back in the early seventies, since then I’ve reread it so many times the books have been replaced twice. To keep from killing more trees, I now own an E-Book.
A classic, of course.
I have read Tolkien’s trilogy several times. A modern series equivalent is HARRY POTTER. I highly recommend these books.
Epic
The lord of the rings is a Good Over Evil story at It’s best, filled with characters of every stripe from tragic to comic, craven to heroic and everything in between.
A page turner takes you to a world that you want to believe in.
Highly sstisfying.
A classic. Hard to get into, but well worth the effort to stay with it. Once hooked, a new world awaits!
Excellent fantasy! Tolkien was a master story teller!
A great re-read every few years since Jr. high
The best three books ever written.
I have read and reread The Lord of the Rings over 100 times since I was 10 years old. It is like visiting old comfortable friends.
I first read this book in 1965. It so captured my imagination that I have lost count as to how many times I have reread The Hobbit and the Trilogy and I am a well-read person.
This collection of 6 books(along with several other books and writings) should be read in school reading classes, everyone should read these,at least give them a chance! Love the characters and story line!!
A classic of its genre.
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone knows the LOTR stories by now after Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy. But the books by Tolkien are definitely worth reading (or, in my case, reading again for the THIRD time!). It takes a little while to get into the writing style – reminiscent of an Old English verbiage – but after a few chapters you’ll be reading along without thinking …
