One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. … lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
From Sauron’s fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.
When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.
This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

One of my favorites! Read it in High School. At that time graffiti was “Frodo Lives” Great memories!
I could go on for ages about this story. So I need to think of something summary to say… This is the best epic fantasy story you could ever read about wizards, orcs, elves, dwarves, magic, a world in peril, an ultimate evil power, warriors, fortress cities, and so on. “One ring to rule them, and in the darkness bind them”–unless the forces of …
It is the old classic good versus evil set in a fantasy world. I have read the series
numerous times.
I’ve read all of the Tolkin books. The books are better than the movies for detail. I
read the The Hobbit when I was in college and we won’t talk about how long ago that was. These books have stood the test of time.
Tolkein isn’t called the Grand Master of fantasy for nothing. This is where Epic Fantasy began and it is still the gold standard. Before Jordan, before Feist, before Eddings, and certainly before Martin there was Tolkein. LOTR inspired the great fantasy authors to write their works. Join us and discover the greatest of all hero quests.
Tolkien’s magnificent work still irritates some fantasy fans and critics who find his Christian themes that are woven throughout the trilogy to be offensive. Good for J.R.R.! They owe a debt of gratitude to the man. But you’ll always find some folk who want to skip out on paying their debts.
One of the best books ever.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! I first read this trilogy when I was in my late teens, and I’ve re-read it several times. It never grows old. This is one of my all-time favorites.
Always a classic favorite of mine.
Gold standard for world-building, sets the bar for the whole fantasy genre. I’ve loved this book for nearly 50 years!
It is THE classic of the modern fantasy genre.
Have read it ovet a dozen times… Always a good read.
Wonderful!
I could not put it down!
One of the great books of all time!
IMO LORD OF THE RINGS became the “Prototype” for virtually all of the books hailing from the “Fantasy Genre” ever since it was first published halfway through the last century. The world building and sheer imagination of Tolkien is absolutely astonishing! Words cannot adequately describe the awe I experience each time I re-read this Trilogy. It is …
A classic well worth the read.
Read all of his books and enjoyed them all so much more than the movies (which were very good but not as detailed as the books).
Tolkien is known as the father of modern fantasy and he has earned that title honestly. I have read the Lord of the Rings series at least 5 times and have enjoyed it immensely each time I read it. I strongly recommend any of Tolkien’s works to anyone who enjoys fantasy literature.
One of my favorite books. Read the trilogy three times over the years, which is something that I don’t normally do. I am a voracious reader but have always felt connected to this book. Bought for my teenaged grandchildren and hope they will make the time to read, as I recommend to everyone. Has something for absolutely everyone!
