One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. … lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
From Sauron’s fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.
When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.
This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

I discovered JRRT in 1969 when I was a freshman in college. Now almost 50 years later I still consider his works magical!
This book is majestic in its scope. Highlights that we all play an important part in the world, even the least of us.
The LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy is my favorite “book” of all time. The story is complex, but simple. The characters are unforgettable. Oh to have friends like these folks did! If you haven’t yet read LORD OF THE RINGS, I would recommend this trilogy to anyone and I would give it 6-stars, if I could!
This wonder-filled classic is also a Cautionary Tale for our times.
In fantasy, no better author exists. While the movies are good, the books delve into the action completely and beautifully. Highly recommended!
Best fantasy ever written no exception.
I’ve read this book many times and I always enjoy it. It transports you into a whole other world.
What’s not to like? Elves, dwarves, hobbits, dragons and more. Totally awesome!
It is still a great read!
Classic literature. A front door to modern fantasy. Tolkien is the king of world-building.
I highly recommend this trilogy!
Classic. Must read.
LOTR is *the* classic fantasy, the one that all the others strive to be.
I used to read this book (originally published as a trilogy) at least once a year, until my paperback copies wore out and had to be replaced. Then *those* wore out and had to be replaced. I’m very happy to now have a definitive copy which will never wear out. My only …
Love Tolkien
The whole series is a must-read.
Best epic ever written.
The Best I have ever read ! I re-read the trilogy every three years since I was 12 ! The Hobbit too !
Lord of the Rings; Fantastic reading, like all Tolkein Stories.
my favorite books of all time
It is a classic! However, the 5 pages of elvish song then re-written in dwarvish is just annoying as all get out. I honestly love the Hobbit way, way more. These books have a lot of very slow points on the very, very long march. If you read it as a metaphor for industry vs environment, it is more compelling but otherwise it is a classic high …
