One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. … lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
From Sauron’s fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.
When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.
This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

Anyone who hasn’t read this should.
I’ve read the series three times already
I think I have read everything he has written. I like the way his stories flow. I reread this book. Love the characters and the lands.
Excellent book! Read them all.
I read this book 50 years ago. I still haven’t found anything better. You cannot beat Tolkien. Even if you have seen the movie, you should still read this book.
I had to read the hole series of books
I originally read this in college. I loved it then and still do. I reread it when I can.
This is one of my all time favourite books in the whole world. When I was going to University I bought this book one summer – spending most of that summer reading it and its two companion books.
After I was done – the world of the Lord of the Rings never left me [I am 70 now and I read these way back in the late 1960s 🙂 ]. For the next 10 + …
A classic! Everyone should read this marvelous tale. And the sequels & prequel!
classic
The series that started it all.
These books, along with the Hobbit, are classics. A fantasy world that everyone can escape into and a cast of characters that you pull for. A must read for any fantasy lover.
Very philosophical and thought provoking
Classic. I’ve read this 6 or more times over the last 30 years.
What can you say about this most original of fantasy works. Never eclipsed and always able to be read again and again. A++++++
This is a classic and must read for anyone who interested in ready Fantasy. I loved the last 2 books in the series, but this one sets it up nicely. If only they didn’t spend so much time in the beginning describing the forest, and the trees, and the grass, and the foliage. We get it….forest.
The Lord of the Rings has been my favorite book throughout my entire life. It is hard to put into word how much it has meant to me, and how it has influenced me and how I write. Certain scenes still stick with me, even though it has been years since I’ve last read it (I need to remedy that). For example, in the Fellowship of the Ring, when they’re …
I could take a little while to read all this book, but every page it’s amazing!
