One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. … lost to him. After many ages it fell by chance into the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins.
From Sauron’s fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor, his power spread far and wide. Sauron gathered all the Great Rings to him, but always he searched for the One Ring that would complete his dominion.
When Bilbo reached his eleventy-first birthday he disappeared, bequeathing to his young cousin Frodo the Ruling Ring and a perilous quest: to journey across Middle-earth, deep into the shadow of the Dark Lord, and destroy the Ring by casting it into the Cracks of Doom.
The Lord of the Rings tells of the great quest undertaken by Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the Wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the Dwarf; Legolas the Elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider.
This new edition includes the fiftieth-anniversary fully corrected text setting and, for the first time, an extensive new index.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but while he studied classic works of the past, he was creating a set of his own.

This is one of the best fantasy books ever written. Tolkien takes you into this world, where you will find amazing characters, action and romance. But the most important feature is the way good prevails with the help of so many beings, summing up all that is really good in people while the evil inside them and outside is conquered.
It is a unforgettable tale about the journey of the ring and when you stop to think about it it is funny that they went through all of that just for a wedding ring!
A true fantasy classic which everyone should read again and again.
I read this in high school. It still grips me. It is an outright classic.
The Lord of the Rings is the yardstick against which I measure all other books. The world Tolkien created is incredible. Middle Earth has a fully developed mythology, language and history. Absolutely fabulous.
Received this series when I was young. Was so enthralled with it I continue to read it every few years. Incredibly well written, expands your imagination and love the characters. A book (series) that creates a visual presentation in your mind as you read.
Still my all time favorite. Good plot, good characters, great prose and amazing world building.
Lord of the Rings was the reason I’ve kept reading. Just knew there is more to the story, I’ve needed to read whole series
Very few books have been better!!!
It takes you into a world of magic, good, evil, temptation and adventure!
Read this the first time – at least a dozen times since – when I was in high school. Started out as required reading, 10 pages in, it was no longer required I had to read it…one of my all time favorites.
Best fantasy series there is.
Tolkien weaves a story for the ages.
A must read for everyone
A classic
It’s classic. What else CAN be said?
This book is one of my all time favorite stories. Great characters for you to cheer for.
The classic fantasy epic that all fantasy novels attain to be compared to. Reach for the sky but fall short …
What can be said that hasn’t been already? Just a terrific, amazing read.
A fantasy journey equal to any of the classics, like The Odyssey or Beowolf. Very rich in character, cultural, historical, and geographical detail with thoughtful, sincere themes.
