Adventures in the English countryside and beyond with the Yorkshire veterinarian and #1 New York Times–bestselling author of All Creatures Great and Small. When World War II ends and James Herriot returns to his wife and new family in the English countryside, he dreams mostly of Sunday roasts and Yorkshire puddings, but new adventure has a way of tracking him down. Soon Herriot finds himself … Soon Herriot finds himself escorting a large number of sheep on a steamer to Russia, puzzling through the trials of fatherhood, and finding creative ways to earn the trust of suspicious neighbors who rely on him for the wellbeing of their beloved animals. Herriot’s winning humor and self-deprecating humanity shine through every page, and his remarkable storytelling has captivated readers for generations.
“This is Herriot at his best,” said the Washington Post of this New York Times bestseller by the author of All Things Bright and Beautiful and Every Living Thing. The Lord God Made Them All is a true story of postwar England that, according to the Columbus Dispatch, “just explodes with the joy of living and loving and caring.”

Loved this entire series by James Herriott. Got me through some very difficult times in my life when I needed something comforting and lovely, because my life was in chaos. LOVE THESE BOOKS.
James Herriot is a great story teller. He has a good mix of stories in each of his books. Some chapters will make you laugh and some will make you cry. The whole series is very well written.
The Lord God Made Them All is a continuation of James Herriot’s memoirs detailing his years as a veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales – the fourth of five books in the memoir series. It picks up where All Things Wise and Wonderful left off, immediately after World War II, as Herriot’s practice is expanding, medicine is making tremendous advances, …
I loved the way the characters came alive under his pen. I could “see” the scenes
as they unfolded and I appreciated their lives, since so many of the stories carried me back to my rural upbringing.
James Herriot takes you there!!
One of the great vet stories of all time!
Classic!!!!!! I have loved James Herriot since I was a child and still reread with tbe same enjoyment as I had back then.
Typical of all his books, it was a good read. Always interesting & shows us the good & evil in people who don’t/won’t give their animals the care & shelter they deserve.
Can’t help but have a good feeling after reading this book.
Outstanding book. I love this series.
Love everything James Herriot
Absolutely any book by James Herriot is a fantastic read.
This was a wonderful read! I am looking forward to reading his other works.
I first read this book about 35 years ago; it has not lost its charm. Wonderful stories! Will last easily another 35 years.
Very good!!!
This is the fourth in the wonderful All Creatures Great and Small series. I own them in most formats–the original hardbacks as they were released, on my Kindle and on Audible, which are read by the actor who played James Herriot on the TV series. I highly recommend the series to everyone.
I love James Herriott,s books. I thought I had read all of them, but this
turned out to have stories I hadn’t read before. I heartily recommend this book.
James Herriot is always fun to read when you want something light but also meaningful.
His characters are always great and the landscape he writes about makes one want to get on a plane immediately and get there.
Have read and re read this series. It never disappoints.
All of James Harriott’s books are fabulous; I’ve loved them all and can just pick one up and open it anywhere and read it.
Witty, great experiences about man and our relationship with animals.
