Adventures in the English countryside and beyond with the Yorkshire veterinarian and #1 New York Times–bestselling author of All Creatures Great and Small. When World War II ends and James Herriot returns to his wife and new family in the English countryside, he dreams mostly of Sunday roasts and Yorkshire puddings, but new adventure has a way of tracking him down. Soon Herriot finds himself … Soon Herriot finds himself escorting a large number of sheep on a steamer to Russia, puzzling through the trials of fatherhood, and finding creative ways to earn the trust of suspicious neighbors who rely on him for the wellbeing of their beloved animals. Herriot’s winning humor and self-deprecating humanity shine through every page, and his remarkable storytelling has captivated readers for generations.
“This is Herriot at his best,” said the Washington Post of this New York Times bestseller by the author of All Things Bright and Beautiful and Every Living Thing. The Lord God Made Them All is a true story of postwar England that, according to the Columbus Dispatch, “just explodes with the joy of living and loving and caring.”

I really loved this book ,because it made you think you were there. Also It kept me wanting to read more. I have also read the other books that go with this set.
Another of Alf Wight’s delightful looks at vet care in the Yorkshire Dales.
I had read all the series of books when I was young. Rereading them was awesome. Classics. Highly recommend
I like all James Herriotts books. Somehow he manages to get you right away engaged in his world. While he is a vet in the earlier days, there are the interactions between the various farmers or people who need a vet, his boss and the boss’ s brother and interspersed with that there is his real enjoyment of the Yorkshire countryside. As a vet he …
Herriot’s stories of life as a country vet are always full of charm and whimsy. Perfect book for animal lovers.
While this book is good, it’s not as good as the first few in the series.
series.
How can you go wrong reading Harriot
I didn’t finish the book. There seemed to be a lot of repetition. I may go back and try again.
Herriot was a wonderful writer. His tales of his own, his partners, & his family’s
lives in English Yorkshire from the 30’s to the 60’s are beautiful descriptions of
Veterinary Surgeons in a largely farm based practice, going about their daily &
Nighttime lives. He is wonderfully descriptive, he has a fantastic knack for creating incredibly …
I had forgotten how wonderful this author was. I had previously read his books but am finding a need to enjoy them again. You can learn something new about animals, and revisit techniques used before modern approach to animal husbandry took hold. Looking forward to reading other books in the series, as his humor and wit are heart warming. Makes …
This book was awesome , I’m going to read the others.
Heartwarming and humorous. A never forget book.
I am a great fan of James Harriot, I have all his books and some are autographed. He was the vet of a friend of mine in England. Unfortunately I was never able to meet him. After he died his Vet Hospital became a museum. In 1999 my Mother and I spent half a day there, near Rippon England. His stories are simple, true, funny and sad. I love the …
Typical of James Heriott’s ability to bring the reader into his world with his wonderful characters and descriptions of the life of a country vet.
I am a retired veterinarian so I found it very interesting to compare with current day veterinary practice.
I own the major Herriot books and re-read them about once every two years. This author is a spell-binding story teller who so obviously loves his work, family, and place in the world, and he takes his readers along in that life. I hope to pry the gaming joysticks from my great-grandsons’ hands long enough for the Herriot magic to work on them.
I love all of Herriot’s books. This one describes how the veterinary practice is changing with the availability of new medicines and equipment, and the reactions of the farmers. The anecdotal stories about his clients, family and neighbors are wonderful.
Wonderful book!
Loved all the James Herriot book s in this series
I love all of James Herriott’s books
