The acclaimed modern science fiction masterpiece, Hugo Award winner for Best Series!
Follow a motley crew on an exciting journey through space—and one adventurous young explorer who discovers the meaning of family in the far reaches of the universe—in this light-hearted debut space opera from a rising sci-fi star.
Rosemary Harper doesn’t expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer… much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman who learned early to keep to herself, she’s never met anyone remotely like the ship’s diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks who keep the ship running, and Ashby, their noble captain.
Life aboard the Wayfarer is chaotic and crazy—exactly what Rosemary wants. It’s also about to get extremely dangerous when the crew is offered the job of a lifetime. Tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet is definitely lucrative and will keep them comfortable for years. But risking her life wasn’t part of the plan. In the far reaches of deep space, the tiny Wayfarer crew will confront a host of unexpected mishaps and thrilling adventures that force them to depend on each other. To survive, Rosemary’s got to learn how to rely on this assortment of oddballs—an experience that teaches her about love and trust, and that having a family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe.

Rather quirky but enjoyable novel. Don’t look for real hard sci-fi, just a fun story.
A scifi that gave me those “found family” feels. Being a fan of shows like StarTrek, and Firefly I could not put this book down. I feel like I can’t really say more without spoiling the experience. Read it for yourself! It’s out of this world…
This book had a lot of character building. Not much happened in terms of the characters being under duress. I guess this book’s purpose was to be the first in a line of sequels, hopefully with more action and adventure.
This is the 2nd book in the trilogy – and although it CAN stand alone – don’t make it!
All three of the books are wonderful.
Action, scandol, great characters, and loyalty to “individuals” who become family.
I enjoyed the heck out of them.
Some danger, but more intrigue.
It won’t be a waste of time!
Just found this author and enjoy her style. She builds the main characters well and makes the support characters 3D. She explains her universe and it is consistent. She has a witty, sarcastic characters and they get along. I plan to finish the series.
Well written, not your average science fiction. I prefer this type of book – not all fighting, nor long, boring description of armament and equipment. Good character development, unique story line.
I’m not usually a fan of science fiction but thought this was well written and very amusing! It kept my interest right away. Very imaginative.
Seriously original story with great unusual characters. Lots of interesting “facts” presented as technology and information in the book’s universe. Great to read a book by a truly intelligent author. Highly recommended.
Brilliant anthropologically-inspired scifi, in the tradition of Ursula K Le Guin. Great characters, great story, and a lot of the conflict is based on cultural misunderstandings. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed this book very much. it was different and entertaining.
I absolutely loved this book and I am anxious to read the sequels. It’s not often you find sci-fi with a lot of love and heart and that’s exactly what the author has given us here. Not to mention the worldbuilding and aliens are impressive, diverse and developed.
I love books like this. Character-driven stories that really make you care and root for them to succeed. This book was just fun all the way around. Highly recommended.
A fun space drama ride through a dystopian future.
Spaceships, aliens, a multicultural crew, ethical questions, privileges being checked, interspecies relationships, lesbianing around the galaxy, unbreakable friendships, redefining families, sad stories and moral victories over bad guys… This book includes (almost) everything I love.
I absolutely recommend the audiobook version, and if you don’t mind music on your audio, the booktrack version is great.
The best SF book I’ve ever read, with heartwarming characters and excellent prose!
Fantastic, Star Trek-level world building, but with an even more inclusive, modern sensibility. The strength of this book is the combination of fantastic scifi and emotional realism. I loved it, and I can’t wait to read the sequels!
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is just fun scifi.
Fun space opera
This is character-focused SF. Quirky, but lovable humans and aliens ad the ship’s AI. The semi-sad ending is resolved in the follow-on book. I’m waiting for more in this vein from this author.
Most impressive. Almost invents another genre. Well, not really but this is not space opera or alien invasion or the usual stuff I read a lot of. The author looks lovingly into the lives of some very different creatures, plus humans as they share their lives on a space ship. I have gobbled up all three of her books, so far and eagerly, I say eagerly await her next book!
Beautifully written book!
