Arabella Marchmont was destroyed when she found out that Jacob died in the war. Especially as it was her fault he was there in the first place. She just couldn’t take her best friend seriously when he proposed, and before she could rectify her mistake he was already gone.
The agonizing wait for him to return began, but tragedy struck leaving Arabella to only wonder what could have been. Jacob was gone from this world, and life had to move on.
When the Earl of Winchester proposes, everyone understood that it was time, even Arabella.

Dilemmas, threats & a vengeful suitor all add to this page turning novel. The pace is good & the characters well fleshed. Arabella is no shrinking violet & is willing to fight for Jacob. I liked Jacob but at times wished he’d been more decisive, I felt he relied on his damaged leg a little too much & thought of himself as flawed rather than a returning soldier who had everything to live for. I felt the ending was a little rushed & bloodthirsty me wanted the villain to suffer far more!
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
SETTING: This is a story of how a misunderstanding of a proposal led to much heartache and pain, not only to the man and woman involved, but also to their family and friends.
Arabella thought her childhood companion was teasing about marriage, and turned Jacob down, telling him marriage was not a subject to tease about. Hurt, Jacob joins the military and is taken to war on the continent. For 2 years, Arabella waits, hearing nothing from Jacob in the meantime. When it is announced he was killed, Arabella is forced by her mother into an engagement with a man she barely knows. As she comes to know him, she finds they do not suit. When she breaks off the engagement, trouble follows. The mad Lord Winchester will stop at nothing, hurt anyone, to achieve his goal of having Arabella renew their engagement.
As the “accidents” and threats mount up, a rescuer appears! But even his family is now threatened if he does not back off of supporting Arabella. How will Lord Winchester be stopped for good? Will he accomplish more pain and tragedy before he can be stopped?
CRITIQUE: An interesting story of love’s misunderstandings, with severe consequences for all. The reader’s interest is kept throughout as the threats continue and increase. How the egomaniac is stopped is quite the story! A clean story, which will be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

Regency romance, pressure is believeable to marry well with correct title. Since guy she has feelings for died serving her majesty. Mama even had the “titled gentleman” all picked out AND ARRANGED NUPTUALS!
Childhood buddies fall in love with each other, but don’t realize it at the same same time, which leads to hurt and pain on each side. Is there any hope?
It was fun and interesting to see the twists and turns play out throughout, as this story had more suspense than many of Rose Pearson’s other books I’ve read.
Arabella and Jacob have been friends such childhood and like all children teasing was a part of their relationship so on the day Jacob told her of his love and his wish to marry her she thinks he is only playing with her even after he claims he is not jesting she refuses to believe or answer. Arabella to late realize that no man-except Jacob could ever claim her heart she waits for an answer to her letter to him but eight months have gone by and she hasn’t heard anything. her father passes away during this time which has caused her mother to start pushing marriage at her one that is more prestigious than those her sisters are embarking on. Then a letter comes, Jacob has been killed in action no more second chance for their love. Arabella fought her mother as long as you could finally she just didn’t care and let her mother push her into a relationship with the Earl of Winchester, her mother even accepted the marriage proposal from him before Arabella could speak for herself, then her mother and the Earl started the plans for the wedding, not even consulting her. The plans go on all about her when suddenly her sister runs into the house completely out of breath and very excited she tells Arabella Jacob is back. What to do is it true, please let it be true oh no I’m to marry another, what will happen to Arabella the Earl and Jacob?

Jacob and Arabella have been friends for just about forever. When Arabella takes something Jacob says as a joke a riff between them occurs. Sometime later news that Arabella receives breaks her heart. Feeling as if she must do what her mother waits she becomes engaged to a man she has little if anything in common with. Then Jacob comes back into her life. Will they find each other again? It was a good story with an excellent villain two thumbs up to Ms. Rose. I love this author’s books they touch your heart and bless your soul a great combination. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
