Still traumatised by her brush with a psychopath, Detective Cassie Maddox transfers out of the Murder squad and starts a relationship with fellow detective Sam O’Neill. When he calls her to the scene of his new case, she is shocked to find that the murdered girl is her double. What’s more, her ID shows she is Lexie Madison – the identity Cassie used, years ago, as an undercover detective. With no … no leads, no suspects and no clues to Lexie’s real identity, Cassie’s old boss spots the opportunity of a lifetime: send Cassie undercover in her place, to tempt the killer out of hiding to finish the job.

I’m working my way through all of the Tana French novels because I have to write a dissertation on her series for my Master’s Degree. This one has been my favorite so far. If you like crime fiction that has some depth and you also liked Donna Tartt’s “A Secret History” (one of my favorite books), you’ll love this series.
Another good book by this author. If I had one criticism, it would be that it was exactly adapted to American audiences, especially the vocabulary and slang.
I love this book. The story is improbable but amazing. The characters are so real and so well depicted that you can imagine what they are thinking.
Tana French is the queen of the twists so even if you have it figured out you are likely to be wrong. I love her characters and want to see them in all her books.
Tour de force!
One of my top five all time favorite books-totally engrossing. Amazing characters and I felt like I was a silent observer in the house with them. Keeps you guessing -wanted to know what happened but at the same time desperately did not want the story to end. Love Cassie Maddox -watching the Dublin Murders series now which is based on In the Woods and The Likeness-so good.
I read “In the Woods” and liked it, so thought I would give “The Likeness” a try. I did NOT like it. The whole premise is unlikely at best and ridiculous in actuality. I won’t go into the plot, but it was mostly boring and unbelievable. The characters were unlikeable and the ending was a letdown. Don’t waste your time. I won’t be wasting mine with anything else by this author.
This is my favorite of all of her novels.
Tana French is always worthwhile. In this one, character development is esp good.
Tana French delves deeply into the messed-up glorious mix of our lives and experiences.
My least favorite so far. The characters were all unlikeable and the story dragged on too long. Also the least realistic of her books.
I loved this whole series.
Tana French always delivers that quiet-burn suspense that sneaks up on you!
Literary mystery
Any book that will hold my interest through-out, is a good book.
Excellent writing
French can really write a great novel full of great characters and twisting plot lines.
After reading this, the second book in the series, I was happy to see some characters from the first book return. I had been under the impression that each book was a different set of characters. And maybe it ends up that way eventually, but I was glad to see Cassie and Sam return. I’ll admit to being sad not to see Ryan though, other than in passing. The story was very intriguing and I found myself sucked in very quickly…even quicker than I was pulled into the previous book in the series. The case was so unprecedented that you just have to keep reading and see where it leads. The characters were very dynamic as well and I found myself wanting to know them. The one thing I didn’t like was how it all turned out in the end. I don’t know what it is about these books, but I always seem to be dissatisfied with the endings. And it’s not that the endings are bad, it’s just my own selfish desire to see things turn out a different way. In any case, I did enjoy the book and will read the others in the series.
