Once upon a time, in an alleyway in the slums of the City Of Lockes, a young and somewhat lonely boy named Sam Haversford turns a group of teenage douchebags into stone completely by accident. Of course, this catches the attention of a higher power, and Sam’s pulled from the only world he knows to become an apprentice to the King’s Wizard, Morgan of Shadows. When Sam’s fourteen, he enters the … he enters the Dark Woods and returns with Gary, the hornless gay unicorn, and a half-giant named Tiggy, earning the moniker Sam of Wilds.
At fifteen, Sam learns what love truly is when a new knight arrives at the castle–Knight Ryan Foxheart, the dreamiest dream to have ever been dreamed.
Naturally, it all goes to hell when Ryan dates the reprehensible Prince Justin, Sam can’t control his magic, a sexually aggressive dragon kidnaps the prince, and the King sends them on an epic quest to save Ryan’s boyfriend, all while Sam falls more in love with someone he can never have.
Or so he thinks.

way, way too much talk of homosexual stuff just within 4 chapters. the dialogue of the characters was done well though.
A terrific adventure starring some truly off-beat and endearing characters. The dialogue is clever, often hysterical, but relies a bit too much on sexual innuendo. Then again, if I got past it, so can anyone else; it’s certainly an entertaining read.
I liked it enough that I looked to see if there was a follow-on yet. I felt that the gay theme was overdone so much that it hurt the store line.
I’ve now read this book three times and it’s still just as fabulous. Sam of Wilds is in training to be the royal wizard for the next king, I fell in love with him, even if *never* shuts up. I’m also in love with Gary, a hornless gay unicorn and Tiggy the half giant. And then there is the incredibly hunky Ryan, the knight whom Sam has been crushing on for years. But Ryan gets engaged to the prince. Yeah, the king-to-be that Sam will be serving. Major problem. Add in the all the other characters, and you have a wonderful ride. Buckle up ‘cuz its about to get bumpy!
Very funny series, could be offensive to some people.
while it’s geared toward adult, based on sexual suggestiveness; its written at a mid-teen level. something to read when you just want to escape I guess.
gay characters silly and crude – humor was somewhat adolescent. Interesting story left the reader wondering if the key figure would ever realize the fulfillment of his desired relationship.
It is a wonderful book but I won’t recommend for a young audience. It is a mature theme series. I have read the first two books in the series and plan to buy the other two as soon as I can. It is a wonderful read and it keeps you on your toes. I have laughed and cried reading it. I would call it an adult fantasy series.
Loved it – the unicorn was a hoot.
Good conversations, odd but funny scenarios. Potential to be much better.
A hilarious, delightful romp full of snark and sass.
Cared about the characters, and for me, this was just way too much fun. Didn’t want it to end.
This book had me literally laughing out loud at times. The writing style just makes the story flow and I couldn’t put it down, it was so entertaining! If you’re looking for a good story with bad puns, witty characters, and lots of banter, this is it!
Laugh out loud funny!
I am a straight female. This book is gay fantasy. I LOVED IT!! I loved the whole series of the tales of varania. I read only the free books and the lightning struck heart was free. I paid for books 2, 3, and 4. First books I’ve paid for in kindle or Amazon Ever. I fell in love with every character. Sam and Gary being my favs.
Taking every stereotypical gay trope and mixing them with an interesting paradigm of magic, TJ Klune has created a laugh-out-loud book right on the cringe-worthy border.
Laugh out loud funny and utterly preposterous. A snarky, egotistical, shade-throwing hornless gay unicorn diva named Gary is best friends with Tiggy, a loveable slow-witted half-giant, and Sam, our hero, a feckless wizard with a rich inner dialog of dithering and smutty longing for Knight Delicious Face, and a talent for getting captured by villains who monologue themselves into stoking his wizard wrath past the point of no return. Outrageous and hijinks and hilarity ensue when a prince is kidnapped by a sex-obsessed dragon named Kevin. I finished this (free) book and immediately bought the next one because I felt beholden to the author. I am reading it now and it’s just more of the same, which is high praise indeed and exactly what I was hoping for.
Loved it!!
A book you seriously will laugh out loud from page to page. This was the first gay book I ever read, if you can deal with this fact. You will find it’s a book you can’t put down, a must have.
