The New York Times Bestseller and A Reese’s Book Club Pick “This love story between Lucy & Gabe spans decades and continents as two star-crossed lovers try to return to each other…Will they ever meet again? “Extraordinary.”—Emily Giffin
He was the first person to inspire her, to move her, to truly understand her. Was he meant to be the last?
Lucy is faced with a life-altering choice. But before she can make her decision, she must start her story—their story—at the very beginning.
Lucy and Gabe meet as seniors at Columbia University on a day that changes both of their lives forever. Together, they decide they want their lives to mean something, to matter. When they meet again a year later, it seems fated—perhaps they’ll find life’s meaning in each other. But then Gabe becomes a photojournalist assigned to the Middle East and Lucy pursues a career in New York. What follows is a thirteen-year journey of dreams, desires, jealousies, betrayals, and, ultimately, of love. Was it fate that brought them together? Is it choice that has kept them away? Their journey takes Lucy and Gabe continents apart, but never out of each other’s hearts.
This devastatingly romantic debut novel about the enduring power of first love, with a shocking, unforgettable ending, is Love Story for a new generation.
“It’s the epic love story of 2017.”—Redbook

Very good and written in a different voice.
My favorite read this year. I will be buying all of Jill’s books.
Nothing unique or original here. Just your basic story of lost love.
Sad but kept me reading to the end.
I managed to finish it, but this book was depressing, hard to read and overall very disappointing. The entire book is written in the form of a woman talking to her college boyfriend. This device was annoying right from the start. This style, piled on top of a totally predictable plot and characters that were barely likable made this an unsatisfactory read for me.
This book moved me. It gave me chills. It made me reflect on the loves in my life,
Couldn’t put it down
Love
Mixed feelings about this story. I can appreciate the soulmate aspect of the story but the choices made by some of the players leaves me in doubt. I appreciate his commentment to his career but can you truly be totally in love and committed to someone without regard to their input. Great story that contemplating what happened with other characters at the conclusion. Great thought provoked.
Great book and one that you don’t want to end. Perfect for the beach.
A great summer read,
I enjoyed the book and really enjoyed her writing!
A steamy love story and she never forgot him.
Could not put this book down. Great love story. Characters in this story will not be forgotten.
Not what I was expecting… That’s a good thing! Actually I would rate 4.5 stars if I could.
Loved it!
She had me crying in the first few chapters, because that happened to me.
I couldn’t put this book down. Reading the first few words I already knew I would love with book because of how beautifully written it is. I could tell how much the author gave to this book. I have the urge to read it again and pay attention to every detail, because every detail matters in this book. Definitely recommend this book, it has moved me.
The Light We Lost filled me with so many emotions that made me feel connected to the characters in a way that seldom happens for me. Very impressed with the storyline and I’m guessing it was somewhat based on truth.
Excellent book
