With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house “spark joy” (and which don’t), this international bestseller featuring Tokyo’s newest lifestyle phenomenon will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home—and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire.

I’m not sure reading this book dramatically changed my life, but it definitely provided a bunch of great perspectives and tips on keeping a home that is orderly and fills you with joy. My favorite piece of advice was how to organize a drawer so that you can always see every single item in it. For sample images, check out: https://www.google.com/search?q=marie+kondo+drawer+images
I read this book a couple weeks ago, and my apartment is so much happier for it. I’d say “OMG you should see my underwear drawer now!” but that would be entirely inappropriate.
I heard about this book a lot but wasn’t sure it would help me because I’m not the type of person to lovingly fold my socks. And yes, I still think Marie Kondo is a little woo-woo, but this book was actually AMAZINGLY HELPFUL.
Only a couple chapters in, I was completely inspired to start cleaning my messy apartment. I’ve been meaning to tidy up my closet for months, but I finally did it!
This is not my first organizing / minimalism book! I have read many before — but none spoke to me like this one did. Truly a life-changer.
I know people love to make fun of this book, but it’s honestly one of my all-time favorites. Deciding whether objects “spark joy” might sound dumb on the surface, but this book is full of great insight about our relationships with objects. At its core, it gives you permission to let things go – that sweater that you haven’t worn in years and don’t actually feel that great in, the gift you didn’t like and feel guilty about not using, the old conference materials that you tell yourself you’re going to go back and review, even though of course you never will. I recently read this for the second time and loved it just as much the second time around. It genuinely makes me want to get up and clean out my closet – that’s pretty magical in my book!
Marie Kodo’s book on tiding up is a solid, easy read to inspire you to clean out your home of things you’ve held onto for ‘way-too-long’. Marie uses a category-by-category approach to insure a positive lasting result. Worth the read and a great motivational tool to get in and clear out your home and lighten your spirit.
I know I’m late to the KonMari craze, but I finally picked up this supposedly life-changing book and agree with the masses that it’s pretty great. I’m maybe not 100% convinced of Marie Kondo’s more touchy-feely beliefs (for example, the assertion that joyfully thanking items like shoes and clothing before putting them away keeps them in better shape over time), but she has some extremely helpful tips on how to approach a tidying overhaul. I am terrible at getting rid of things and am quick to assign sentimental value to something, even if it’s obvious I should discard it, and since I’ve recently moved and am now living in a new space, I’ve found myself itching to clean out things I no longer need but am unable to make the get-rid-of-it plunge. I now have some very clear notes on how to approach this process in a way that no longer feels impossible and overwhelming, and I’m excited to see how well the KonMari method works in practice!
I moved house a few months ago and this helped me let go and stay on task. It’s a great audio book to have on while sorting. I took photos and group texted my daughters some of their items I had saved, some as far back as kindergarten. In the end, it is just stuff as one daughter said and I do have the memories. This book was well worth the money.
This really is life changing! I’ve turned over my whole house. Not even sure what to do with all the extra space I have now. Actually, I’ve lent out a portion of my basement for a friend who is moving.
This book is helping me get everything in my house organized, and I already feel less stressed!
Some of the ideas are very practical even if some seem too extreme to be realistic or don’t fit ones mindset. Gets you thinking. I’ve been very happy with the results of implementing some of her more practical suggestions.
This is a great book to read before a rainy day. Then you’ll be ready to tidy once and for all on that rainy day. Four stars, because some things just don’t apply to my life. I’m deep into thus book and ready to go! Highly recommend!
Decluttering is amazing and does bring good things into your life. Really helped me and maybe coincidentally brought a long term sale negotiation to a close.
This non-fiction book has changed my life. I used to think I was well organized until I read this book. Now I’m getting rid of no longer used items and things that no longer give me joy.
A must read before decluttering!
If you want to completely change your relationship to what you own, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” will help you live with what you love!
Excellent and inspiring book about how to pare down, and then organize one’s possessions. I refer to this book frequently for motivation and reminders.
I love reading how to be better at any thing. I really loved the ideas in this book. I have put several of them to work. I am one who tends to hold on to things way to long.
This gives you a good explanation why we do that. My sock drawer has been in order ever since I read this book… Among a lot of other things. Read it you won’t be sorry.
As I read this book I started to feel that this woman had OCD to the max!
You have to pick and choose her ideas. Overall, I found some really helpful suggestions.
Life changing. Less is more.
Only keep the “things” that make you happy. Using that premise, it was much easier to get rid of all my excess books, clothing etc. It inspired me in a way that no other getting organized book was able to do. I have given this book to many friends and family.
Some helpful but not so new tips, presented well
