Hattie Walker dreams of becoming a painter, while her parents want her to settle down. As a compromise, they give her two months to head to Denver and place her works in an exhibition or give up the dream forever. Excellent. Excellent. Excellent book. Well worth the time to sit down and devour the book. Because once I started the book that’s pretty much what I did. Devoured.
Hattie Walker is on her way to Denver to try and prove to her parents that her paintings are worth an exhibition. She’s turned down way too many marriage proposals and her parents have had enough of it. So she has two months otherwise, back home she goes.
On her way, her stagecoach is robbed leaving her the only survivor who can identify to robber, and is rescued by Arapahoes who in turn eventually give her to the local Lieutenant, who happens to be an old childhood friend of Hatties. From here, Hatties life is changed. To better or not, is up to her and Jack.
The story is well written and while at first I didn’t like Hattie very much, she evolved and changed over the course of the story. Regina’s writing is such that you can actually feel like you are there in the circumstances, the fort and the Indians.
I would definitely recommend this book.
This was possibly the most anticipated book I’ve ever gotten my hands on. After reading Holding the Fort, the first book in the series, I began to love Jack Hennessey.
In the beginning, there’s action, which is always a plus for me. Hattie’s stagecoach is robbed, and she’s left the only survivor. She’s rescued by an Arapaho tribe, but she doesn’t realize she’s being rescued. That’s the first in a series of hilarious misunderstandings. I won’t go into more detail in order to avoid spoilers, but I did not see the result coming. But it leads Hattie and Jack to strike a bargain: she’ll help him, and in exchange, he’ll make sure she gets to Denver for her exhibition. If Hattie gets a painting in the exhibition, her parents won’t push her to get married, but Jack will have to sacrifice his future to ensure Hattie’s.
I think one of the things I really enjoyed about this book was watching both characters mature. Jack realizes that Hattie is in fact not perfect. And Hattie begins to realize she’s a mite selfish and shallow. Character arcs are my favorite part of any book, and watching these two grow was a treat. Regina Jennings does such a great job of painting character descriptions through their actions and choices rather than lengthy descriptions.
The mystery element was also intriguing with a plot twist I didn’t quite see coming. There were a couple of different mysteries that were woven together, and I enjoyed putting the pieces together before Jack and Hattie did. I also enjoyed Jack’s interaction with the Arapaho tribe, and Hattie’s growing respect for the tribe was powerful. It was a great reminder of how we should treat others, even if we don’t understand them.
I loved reading The Lieutenant’s Bargain, Regina Jennings second book in her Fort Reno series. It is just as great as the first book, Fort Reno.
Lt. Jack Henneesey finds himself “accidentally married” to Hattie Walker, who he is sent to rescue from a stagecoach attack, in which she is the only one that escapes.
Hattie has known Jack since childhood, as they went to school together.
I love how the story shows how their relationship blossoms, as they try to make the best of their, marriage.
The book is full of romance, some mystery and historical facts, and the story line will keep you turning the page until the very end.
I was given a copy of The Lieutenant’s Bargain by the author, Regina Jennings and this is my honest opinion of the book
Great book. Kept me wanting to find me out what was going to happen next. Then when I got to the end, I wanted it to continue. Regina Jennings is a great author. She keeps you engaged in the story.
Some authors tend to lose momentum as they produce book after book. I’m glad to say this is not the case with Regina Jenning’s latest novel, The Lieutenant’s Bargain. The second book in her Fort Reno series, Jennings fills the pages with mystery, adventure, humor, and romance that is clean, uplifting, and satisfying all in one piece. To say I was sorry to see the book end is an understatement. Her characters ooze with authenticity, side plots provide twists and turns, and minor characters fill in gaps of humor and liveliness that keep the story moving. I truly hope we don’t have to wait long for another book in this series!
I received this book from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Lieutenant Jack Hennessey is a patient, highly respected man but he has a lot to learn when it comes to women! Jack has loved Hattie Walker since a boy but doesn’t expect to meet up with her at an Indian camp in Colorado! Spoiled Hattie can’t believe this handsome man is the scrawny boy she remembers from childhood. Hattie learns to think of others and not just her desires. I enjoyed reading The Lieutenant’s Bargain even though I got impatient for both Jack and Hattie to admit their feelings for each other. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author and Bethany House Publishers. This is my honest opinion.
Wonderfully written! Being transported right into Indian Territory for the perfect romantic predicament!
If ever I were to find myself in a pickle, a conundrum, a bit of a fix . . . I would want
Regina Jennings to write my way out!
Funny, surprising, perfectly-timed, and as always charmingly romantic.
She doesn’t stop there. It is both enlightening and uplifting.
My definition of “The Perfect Read”!
I always know I’m in for a treat when I pick up a book by Regina Jennings, and The Lieutenant’s Bargain is definitely a treat. The author’s distinctive, sparkling sense of humor permeates this tale and makes it a delight to read. Although this story can stand alone, it’s the second book in The Fort Reno series, and includes many of the characters in the first book, Holding the Fort. It was fun to revisit some of them and see what they’ve been up to.
Jennings’ precise historical detail shines in this story set in 1885 in Indian Territory, and the characters are vividly drawn and endearing. Jack and Hattie had me chuckling and giggling out loud with their delightful banter and miscommunications. They are, without a doubt, two of my favorite Jennings characters. For a brilliantly funny tale packed with adventure, charm, and romance, with an added dash of faith, grab this book. It’s one for the keeper shelf!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
The Lieutenant’s Bargain is the second installment from Regina Jennings series, Fort Reno. I have to say this one is probably among my favorites written by her, as well as, among my top ten favorites I have read in 2018. Hattie and Jack’s story is so sweet, fun, and delightful.
I can not tell how much I love The Lieutenant’s Bargain. I would give it one hundred stars if I could. I highly highly recommend it. I can not wait to see what happens in the third addition to Fort Reno series.
I received this book from the author, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

I have enjoyed all the books by Regina Jennings that I have read and this one is no exception. This book is full of fun between Jack and Hattie. They have known each other since they were children. But a lot has happened since they were kids. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more books about Fort Reno.
I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
My favorite genre is Historical Fiction and this book is a prime example of the reason why. Not only am I getting wonderful characters and a very unique plot concept from Regina Jennings, but due to her research I am also learning things from this time period that I never knew. With her excellent descriptions, I can even picture being at Fort Reno and the nearby reservations.
The characters are realistic and endearing. I always love when characters know each other as children, and the descriptions of Jack’s gawky childhood and cluelessness around women are perfect. He feels more comfortable in his house with books crowded all around him and believes that others should feel the same. Though he has a wonderful sense of humor.
I have always been amazed at people who could paint and Hattie makes use of her gift of painting in a wonderful way.
I have read the previous books (Holding the Fort and Bound and Determined) in the Fort Reno series, and this book continues with the previous story-lines and characters. Willis even makes a subtle comment about camels which anyone who has read Bound and Determined will understand.
There is so much historical information packed in this book. I loved learning more about the Arapaho school and Fort Reno.
Some of my favorite scenes included Jack trying to impress Hattie at the reservation, many of the scenes at the Arapaho school, and the continuation of Daniel and Louisa’s story.
Jack’s book clutter reminds me of how much I love my kindle. With reading over 200 books a year, the books would take over if so many weren’t digital. I completely recommend adding this book to your collection, though I recommend getting this book in paperback. Every side of it is so pretty!
I love this book! The plot was fantastic, I feel instantly for Hattie! Hattie is so excited to go to Colorado but that’s not what God has in mind for her. This story has romance, action and a meeting with Indians. The story wraps around your heart and leaves you feeling so happy! Hattie has a gift for art and God shows her there are many ways to use her gift. Lieutenant Jack Hennessy had my heart from the start. He is so smart, likes to read and is so caring. Jack decides to put God first and gives him all his problems and his relationship with Hattie. This book is the best in The Fort Reno series, I would love to see more in this series!
The Lieutenant’s Bargain by Regina Jennings is the second in her delightful series, The Fort Reno series. Set in December 1885 in what was termed Indian Territory, Hattie Walker finds herself alone in the wild, freezing and terrified. On her way to Denver for an art exhibition, the stagecoach in which Hattie was a passenger, was attacked by a gunman leaving all other passengers dead and Hattie striving to survive the night.
After surviving the terror and the night in the middle of nowhere, Hattie finds herself rescued by a group of Arapaho, friendly but with her fear of Indians, Hattie does not recognize any their gestures to care for her as positive.
Lieutenant Jack Hennessy out of Fort Reno, has worked with the Indians to establish trust so that the Indians will send their children to the mission school for an education. Receiving a message about a survivor of a apparent stagecoach robbery, Hennessy heads out to retrieve the survivor and return to Fort Reno.
Upon his arrival strange things begin happening, like finding the survivor in a state of severe dishevelment and starving. Confused, he learns the survivor has earned a rather unflattering nickname and the entire village wants her gone. After requesting, and receiving, permission for a ceremony for Hattie to be released to him, the lieutenant heads back to the fort completely clueless that the ceremony he had just participated in held a particular meaning, one that would endanger both Jack and Hattie’s futures.
As with the first novel of the series, The Lieutenant’s Bargain is a great story evoking a bit of history, old west action, romance and plenty of chuckles. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story and am looking forward to the next installment of The Fort Reno series!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and am under no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions therein are solely my own.
Once again Regina Jennings leads us on a humorous, historical adventure with suspense & romance intertwined. Her characters have such unique & interesting backstories, and her cover art is definitely eye-catching!
Hattie & Jack’s story was different from the typical plot of this genre. Books that end with a wedding bore me. That’s when life is just beginning! That’s one reason I could hardly put down The Lieutenant’s Bargain. (I admit that I was even reading at stop lights!) As a teacher, I also enjoyed reading about the school, even though it makes me sad thinking about the boys losing their braids. I love learning about Native Americans, & this book helped me understand a little more about the Arapaho.
I loved the 1st book in this Fort Reno series & couldn’t wait for the sequel to come out. Now I’m looking forward just as anxiously for the third!
From start to finish, I loved this book! The characters are multifaceted, dynamic, full of life, spunk, and charm. I enjoyed their playful banter and I couldn’t help but stay up late into the night reading and enjoying every moment of this page-turning, engaging story!
Lieutenant Jack Hennessey while bookish, with a propensity to correct other’s on not only grammar but also historical accounts, he is sure to capture your heart. Jack is charming with a quick wit and has a depth of character that goes beyond what you see at first glance. Jack has a heart for the Native Americans and a deep desire to see that they are treated fairly and that their children are given a good education.
Hattie Walker has big dreams and a one track mind. She is headstrong, stubborn and determined to make it to Denver no matter the cost. But when events beyond her control unfold, will her heart soften to include a broader plan; God’s plan for her life?
While this story is the second in the Fort Reno series, you can easily read it as a stand-alone and not feel lost. I loved reading this story, it has found a place on my keeper shelf and will come out again in the future for additional reading enjoyment! I give this story 5-enthusiastic stars and encourage you to pick up a copy for yourself to enjoy as soon as possible!
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I am not required to write a positive review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.)
I really enjoyed this storytelling. I’m from Oklahoma so Indian Territory and how the Native Americans were treated has always been of interest. Their ways of living are fascinating, and how some changed their style of living is of interest.
This had a fascinating beginning, an intriguing story, and a happy ending, of course. I really liked the main characters, and I loved catching up with previous ones! So many neat twists in this storyline to enjoy. I also loved how the romance story develops. It breaks a bit from the traditional which is marvelous! I might add that I have a brother that lives in Hennessey, Oklahoma.
There is also a very nice faith theme in this novel that is frequently missing from “Christian Fiction” these days. If you enjoy historical fiction and a fun read, then don’t miss this one. I really think this is my favorite of Regina Jennings novels that I’ve read.
I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I love historical romance and enjoy it even more when an author adds something additional, like humor or suspense, to give the story more depth. This particular novel actually gives both of those extras in a fantastic story of finding a love right in front of you, when it’s least expected.
The action begins in those first pages, and I was immediately swept into the story. Hattie’s strength and resilience impressed me, even as she annoyed me a bit with her immature attitude at certain points. But as the story progressed, her growth began and I came to love her. Ironically, as the heroine made progress, our hero stagnated a bit, but soon they were on the same page and the only thing lacking was their happy ending, but it was far from guaranteed.
I hate a story that doesn’t let me enjoy the couple together for at least a few pages after all the trauma they have endured, and one of the best parts of this novel is the extended happily ever after. Because the characters are married from early on (but we don’t know if they will stay together after their unintentional beginning), we get glimpses of the happy ending from the start. And even when we think we’ve reached the end, there are several more chapters to tell us the author still has more for the characters to experience.
Partially set during Christmastime, this book is the perfect gift for the reader on your list, or for yourself. Engaging characters, an interesting setting, laugh-out-loud moments, and a touch of suspense all contribute something to this perfect story. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy historical romance—whether you’ve read Regina Jennings before or not, there’s something here for everyone to love.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was under no obligation to post a positive review. The opinions expressed are both honest and my own.
The Lieutenant’s Bargain is the second of Regina Jennings’ books I have read. What I have found each time is that reading her stories leaves me anxious to read more. Her imaginative, quirky, adventurous writing with such charming characters is very appealing.
After her stagecoach is robbed, leaving Hattie as the only witness of the murders, she flees into the wilderness. When she is rescued by friendly Arapaho, she mistakenly believes they are going to kill her. Her attempts to escape and reactions to the food they try to feed her are hilarious and even funnier is the name they bestow on her as a result.
Jack, the boy-now-lieutenant, who had been so in love with her when they were in school together, has no idea Hattie is the one going to take off the local tribe’s hands. While he understands some of the Arapaho language, there is much he doesn’t know and his attempts at impressing her don’t turn out quite like he planned.
The interactions between Hattie and Jack are so comical! They are also tender and sweet as he is the only one who is able to make her feel secure after her trauma. I loved the way Jack appeared so in control and fastidious, and yet his house was a bit of a disaster with books piled up everywhere. When Hattie attempted to help him straighten up (without his knowledge, of course!), the results were hilarious. Who but an artist would ever think to organize books like that?
In addition to the great story and personal interactions, the book is also carefully researched and has so many details about the interactions between the “Indians” and the settlers in the Oklahoma Territory. The details of the missionary school and the tenuous relations with the tribes were not only fascinating and illuminating, they were also woven into the story very naturally.
Historical fiction readers who enjoy humor, adventure, and spiritual lessons should put this book on their must-read list!

The Lieutenant’s Bargain ( Fort Reno #2 )
By: Regina Jennings
The Lieutenant’s Bargain is book two by Regina Jennings in Fort Reno Series. The author drew me in right away. I love the story and the characters. Jack is the Army Lieutenant and Hattie is an art painter going to Denver. I enjoyed them getting to know each other. They thought they knew each other from years ago. Jack has always loved Hattie, but he got his heart betoken. Hattie goes through a lot , being sent to Denver, her stagecoach attacked, and took in by the Arapho’s. Jack sent to rescue her, and a bargain puts them in a predicament . What will this do for both of them? I caught myself laughing several times at the two of them.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book by Bethany House, but was not told that I had to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.
I was hooked on this story from the first couple of pages! This is the first time I’ve read Regina Jennings but she has already been added to my TBR list for her other writings. This is a great story–a real page-turner. While I initially thought the story to be predictable, it was anything but. I couldn’t put this book down for curiosity about what would happen next. Mrs. Jennings’ writing vivid writing made me feel as if I were there experiencing all that the characters were experiencing. I highly recommend this book.
