They were the young ones, the bright ones, the ones with the dreams. From the Nazi-prowled wastes of North Africa to the bloody corridors of Europe, they answered the call gladly. It was their duty, their job, their life. They marched off as boys, and they came back–those who made it–as soldiers and professionals forged in the heat of battle…
The first book in a great series about the military. WEB Griffin, actually Bill Butterworth, was a veteran who knew about what he wrote. The books ring with authenticity.
I always appreciate him giving me a blurb for my very first book thirty years ago, Eyes of the Hammer, even though he didn’t know me; he just knew I was also a veteran.
Recommended!
This book on so many levels is just spot on. Being a Veteran I can only laugh and CRY with what the characters experience in this book. Having served in Germany I can actually see the main characters and how without spoilers they interacted, Why they make the decisions they do and the culture of the military that makes such things not only possible but not fiction. This is the beginning of the series of characters that continue through the ranks and subsequent wars. My dad who is a Korean War vet read these books as well after I recommended them to him. The characters are well written and the story line is page turning. The first part of this book is Mitchner like in setting up the culture and story for those who are not acquainted with the nuance’s of the military culture. For those of us who are it was nice to see in print what so many of us have witnessed.
The book is part of a series and they are all superior reading. I have reread series several time
I’ve read all of Web’s books and love them all!
Griffin and Butterworth quite the team.
fictional characters intertwined with real life events depicting life in the military post WWII
Good series to loose your self in
Love the story line I OWN hard copies of this entire series along with the corps series Definately knows how to spin a story
I can never get enough of this series.
Another Griffin military book. His writing carries the formula.
Great book to start off the series. Have read W.E.B. GRIFFIN series more than once!
This is a great book! Easy to read and a real page turner! Be prepared to have time to read the series, because once you start you will want to read the whole series! Good story lines throughout, keeps you wanting more!
1st in the series… don’t start unless you are prepared to read the next 9… Mr. Butterworth is the Master of combining military history and fiction…
Always enjoy the history and characters from these authors. Love the progress thru history.
This is the first of a series of books by Mr. Griffin. It follows the careers of a number of characters from lieutenants until some of them became Generals. As time goes on, each character is fully developed, and the plot is reinforced by communications by higher headquarters, that provides the background for things that developed in the plots.
