I fell in love a few times with this book. This story. Alec is so easy to love. It’s no wonder Reece falls for him so quickly. And wow, Reece! Boy is she not the girl we meet in Birdie’s book (The Girl in the Closet). Oooh no. She is so much stronger than I have her credit for. And her story…the whys, when’s and hows, um yeah, that alone is enough to make you see her in a brand new light. Least it did me! I loved it! Only part I didn’t like, was that dreaded, the end. Doncha hate that lol!
The Lies We Tell Ourselves was a suspenseful, sweet and heartwarming read. I enjoyed the banter and the slow burn between Reece and Alec. I loved watching Reece realize she was so much stronger than she ever realized as she reclaimed her life. Alec was a fierce protector yet his patience and manner in dealing with both Reece and her mother had me falling hard. This intense and emotional read was a fantastic addition to this series that has me wanting more of the southern heroes.
“Suddenly he looks up and catches me staring at him. I still feel the impact of his gaze and realize it’s the way he looks at me, with his full attention. What if I open my heart to this man?”
I enjoyed this sweet and exciting romance so much!! The characters really mesh well, and I giggled at their antics, and really enjoyed both the heat, the thrill, and the heart warming facets of this story. It really, really made me want to read the rest of the series, so I’m super excited to read the rest of the guy’s stories!! I thank the Author for providing a copy to review!
“Just looking at her makes my heart race, and I’m afraid if I close my eyes she might disappear. She’s the woman I want to love forever, the one I won’t let go of. I’ve been longing for change, needing something to fill the void I had in my life, and Reese has been it all along.”

I think I need a break from this series because this one just didn’t work for me. From book to book it gets downhill and the stories start to blur together for me. I also expected something different since the blurb stated that Reece was planning a wedding but there was not even a real relationship and the author went a totally different route. (Obviously, it’s not the author’s fault that I anticipated something else, but the last book and this blurb somehow misled me regarding Reece’s story.)
My mind was spinning and my thoughts wouldn’t shut up during this read about the things that didn’t make sense to me or were more or less irrelevant to the story IMO. I didn’t care about the characters or their story and this hasn’t happened to me in a while. The concept of the story wasn’t bad but the way it was executed was where it went wrong for me.
The story happened all within a couple of weeks and was too rushed without any depth. The HEA was there without me feeling anything and I even skipped over the sex scenes because I just didn’t really care anymore at that point. I don’t want this to sound harsh but I just read this story very emotionless which was odd for me since I’m usually a very sentimental person.
I had been looking forward to this story ever since the last book because I thought Reece was in danger and Alec would come to her rescue. It turned out to be a lot different though because Clay was no real threat to Reece. I was disappointed because that was what I was most looking forward to in this story – the suspense. I didn’t like that Reece was so rich with a bottomless pot of gold, and that she didn’t get her mum the help she needed in all those years. I generally don’t like when stories are so easily handled when there’s so much money that nothing’s impossible. It just takes all the fun away of the characters figuring a way out of a situation.
I really hope that the next book that I’ll read will be more up my alley.
I have read every book in this series, and they are all amazing. Alec is ! I was so enthralled by this book, I literally couldn’t put it down! I loved it. The detailed writing had me swooning! And I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
THE LIES WE TELL OURSELVES is the third book in the Southern Heroes Series. And what a great hero Alec Taylor becomes! Plus easy to fall in love with. Even Reece’s mother fell in love with him.
Alec Taylor was working undercover to get the incriminating proof on a drug operation. His job was to infiltrate the organization by getting hired as a bodyguard of Clay Roberts. The whole team is anxious to catch Clay and think this is their best shot. Clay hires him as a bodyguard, but not for him. He wants Clay to guard his fiance. Reece Nicolson. She becomes Alec’s new “Target.” They believe she is the financier of Clay Robert’s operation, and they can use this chance to get proof that she is involved.
He takes his “body-guarding” very seriously, and that includes watching over Reece’s sweet mother, too. After being with Reese, and seeing the “true” situation that her & mother are living under, the tables turn. Suddenly Alec is protecting them both from the very man who hired him to guard them. Reese realizes the biggest lie that she had told herself was that this was her life, and she had to settle for it.
Alec Is EVERYTHING the compassion this man has is outstanding and he gives us all of him and holy crap can this man move taking down anyone getting in his way and who dares to threaten Reece and her mom. The bond Reece shares with her mom is so heartfelt and the most beautiful ever and lets put Alec in the mix and you have double overload of emotion that will make you laugh ,cry , and it will have you swoon all over the place. They are both so full of love and the events that happen with the twists and lies and danger lurking its very powerful and Yay for Mom for making Alec uncomfortable. I loved it the characters and plot is fantastic.
This is book 3 in the Southern Heroes Series and this is quite a gripping read. Each book in this series is interconnected and draws you in more and more. Michelle has brought the perfect blend of suspense mixed in with romance and passion.
I loved the main characters Alec and Reese. The banter and the slow build of their relationship was lovely to watch. Alec is an undercover Agent and Reese is a woman that has been lied and played by a man who was once her best friend. She had become dependent on her friend when she lost her father and he took advantage of her inheritance and vulnerability to fund his illegal enterprises.
Reese and her mother are practically prisoners in their own home until Alec comes along, as Reese’s bodyguard, and they begin to have the confidence to break free.
I found this book lighter then the others in this series as they had a darker theme to them, it made this easier to read in one go.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series Wyatt’s story in All the Wasted Time
Phenfreakintabulous yes phenomenal, fantastic, and fabulous all rolled into one! Normally I’m a total sucker for Bad Boys, but these hot southern hero’s have just busted on the scene and said screw the bad boys we will lock them up and steal their girls! Roll cops theme music… Good guys are winning for once. I was die hard Aiden but Alec might be my new favorite. (My heart is already mushy for Wyatt) The characters from this series are so swoon worthy! Totally badass, hot, and huggable. This story is so well written. It has just the right amount of each element. It’s fast paced and action packed. Reese is feisty and stronger than even she knows. It’s so easy to love these characters they are the kind of people you want in your life. The Author continues to raise the bar, shes totally out done herself with this one. It has all the feels. It’s a definite must read. I can’t wait for the next story.Michelle Heard
Omg this book was just as epic as I knew it would be.
I couldn’t put it down once I started. Was totally worth the lack of sleep.
This book pulled every emotion from me, and that doesn’t happen with many books.
Cannot wait to see more from this author.
I’m loving Michelle Heard’s Southern Heroes, and I’m thinking Alec Taylor might just be my favourite. As well as being a bada$$ cop, he’s also sweet and extremely caring, I love his mushy side. An undercover police officer hired by Reece Nicolson’s overly possessive fiancé to protect her, Alec discovers more than he bargained for when he tries to uncover a major drugs operation. Reece’s one priority is her mother, and she’ll do whatever it takes to protect her, even if it means lying to those closest to her. Can Alec break through her shell and get her to trust him? A lovely romance with some familiar characters (if you’ve read the previous books). Highly addictive and thoroughly enjoyable. I can’t wait for more. I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review.
Loving Michelle Heard’s Southern Heros series! The Lies We Tell Ourselves, book 3, is a faced paced love story of Alec and Reece who meet under false pretenses. Alec is so easy to love and Reece desperately needs to find it. Although this is book 3, it can definately be read as a stand alone and you still would love the story! I loved this HEA and can’t wait for book 4!
I love these Southern Heroes Michelle Heard has been writing! I really enjoyed this book! Alec was such a swoon worthy hero! This was definitely a slow burn, but sometimes I think that makes it even better. This is not a book to pass up!
Woman! What are you doing to me? I have clocked in late from lunch EVERY day this week. I can not get enough of this amazing book. Word for word. Page for page. Every character made THIS book. Even Clay. I love, love, loved this beautifully written gem! Once you start it, you will not be able to stop. That’s a promise.
Wow what a fast pace read that will have you seeing that love can be find no matter the hardships that you have been through. This is a amazing read that will have your heart and emotions on high. This story will grab you by the heart and having you loving Alec and Resse. I so loved this story, but the ending ugh!!! I need more..
Alec and Reece pull you in and have you wanting more and more.
What happens when you don’t know who to trust and who not? Page after page of action, emotions, heat, and steam. With danger lurking and truth and lies hard to come by will Alec and Reece be able to tell the truth to themselves and to each other. Can’t wait to read the next one
I love Michelle. Her books are always enjoyable. Reece just wants peace for her mother and to live her life. But Clay is controlling her life and it takes a new bodyguard named Alec to get her out from underneath his control. But will things be easy for her? I love Reece and Alec together. These two are amazing together. I love how Alec is with Reece’s mom. Those are some very tender moments. This was just a great book. Great characters an amazing storyline so well written.I can’t wait to read more from Michelle.
Reece Nicolson is afraid of her boyfriend Clay Roberts and is quietly biding her time until she can escape with her mother to a place of her own. Clay was once her best friend but has now turned to manufacturing and distributing drugs which has changed him into a dangerous man. Now he has hired her a bodyguard which decreases her ability to escape.
Alec Taylor is a police officer who is working undercover to bring down Clay Roberts. He knows he needs to gain Clay’s trust and does so but now is watching over Reece.
Will Reece and Alec be able to find allies in each other or will the distrust in each other allow Clay to get the upper hand?
This is another great book in the series and these “heroes” keep getting better!
My heart was broken for Reece and the relationship she found herself in. I felt terrible that so much had changed with Clay but she felt like she couldn’t escape due to the condition that her mom was in and she also felt guilty for all of the support that Clay had given her. I was a little frustrated with her for not seeing things earlier on but I think it was because she was so overwhelmed with trying to take care of her mom.
Alec was awesome and I knew which side he was on but he was treading a fine line with trying to discover how much Reece knew and was part of. I liked when he defended her with Clay and the two of them were able to discover where their loyalties lay.
I loved when Reece finally did the right thing and called Wyatt and I knew things would be a little better then but I had no idea about how powerful Clay was and who he was working with and I was totally shocked at what was revealed!!
Towards the end things got super tense and I was freaking out for sure but I knew the hero would save the day!!
The end was so great and I loved the dance!!
Looking forward to the next book!
5 Cranky Stars
Move over other book boyfriends you have been replaces by Alec. Nothing personal just that epilogue cemented his permanent book boyfriend status. Lordy lordy.
Alec is a detective who goes undercover and is tasked with getting close to a drug manufacturer. When he’s able to insert himself into this man’s life his job shifts from protecting Clay to protecting Reece. He figures she’s an easier target to get info from, but he didn’t expect her to just be living one day at a time waiting for the right moment to escape. He is drawn to how close she is to her mother and she doesn’t give off the vibe of being in cahoots with Clay. Day by day the lines get blurred and he knows when the truth comes out it will hurt not just his heart but Reece too.
Reece is trapped in a prison of her own making. Thinking Clay is her only choice since he was at one point her best friend and stuck around during a family tragedy, he can’t be that bad. He now has access to her money and is becoming increasingly unstable. She wants to leave but she’s scared. When Clay assigns Alec to be her guard she feels her life is well and truly over. No way she can escape with her ailing mother with someone reporting her every move. When she learns that Alec may be on her side she starts to open up. He might be the one to help her and her mother. When the truth comes to light, she doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not and who is truly on her side.
I loved Cole. Him and Birdie made me cry in the car with my family around. I thought surely no one can take his place. I was wrong dead wrong so go ahead and mark this day that I finally admitted I was wrong about something. I loathed Clay. He was such a pompous self-absorbed useless waste of air. I loved that Alec was selfless and so darn sweet. I did feel bad for Reece I can see how she thought she was stuck. Her love for her mother and helping her recover tugged on my heart strings. I think Alec and Reece are perfect for each other. I’m now going to need Wyatt’s story because I feel he has an amazing story to tell. Kudos once again to Michelle Heard and this amazing series.
There is nothing better when you get the chance to take some time out from the real world and just simply soak yourself into a novel. It’s the best feeling ever. So when The Lies We Tell Ourselves landed I couldn’t wait to start it, and I mean I COULD NOT WAIT!
But what I never in a million years anticipated was this beautifully written, face paced novel capturing my attention so badly that I read it in one sitting….Yep you guessed it guys, one sitting.
Yes as I sit here writing my review I look a treat with bags under my eyes and the tiredness, boy am I tired, but Alec and Reece’s story was completely worth the sleep deprivation I am now suffering.
Reece is an absolute powerhouse. Her story was one of heartache, pain, and a whole lot of unknowns, but with the unknowns came the strength, fight and hope and courage to right so many wrongs.
Alec….Guys what is there not to love. His story was one of determination, courage and the will to fight no matter the consequence to make sure justice prevailed.
But….what about the lies, the secrets and the damage that these caused?
How does Reece, or for that matter Alec recover from the untruths that were told?
Guys I just adored this novel. A beautifully written novel with just the right balance of heartache, fear, pain, hope, strength and love that captured my heart and soul.
I loved Alec and Reece’s story. But keep your eye out for Mrs. Nicolson…..Guys she will take your breath away.
5 stars for me
